The Gray Zone

When I started watching the film, I had some reservations because I thought it would be a propaganda pamphlet for a certain ideology, but as it progressed, I was surprised to discover that the story didn't fall into the trap of taking sides. And I think that's a great achievement.
I've seen many of Yvan Attal's films in which he acts, but of the approximately six or seven he's directed, I've seen few. I had forgotten about this one and only found the time to watch it a few days ago, because it's over two hours long. However, the story it tells is quite interesting, and the way he narrates it makes time fly by and keeps us glued to the screen.
The actor and director included his wife, the great Charlotte Gainsbourg, and his son, Ben Attal, in the main cast. In this way, it all stayed in the family. Undoubtedly, they worked very well together and perfectly understood the director's intentions, being a family themselves.
The subject matter and the way it's handled are very important and highly relevant today, especially in European countries, where it seems that being born male is a crime. This story is divided into two distinct parts, which we see through the eyes of two characters: Alexandre and Mila. A young man from a powerful and influential bourgeois family and a woman with an Orthodox Jewish mother. Both have divorced parents, but they are connected.
A crime like the one presented in the film's plot is a very delicate matter. And the filmmaker succeeds by not conditioning the narrative to any ideology, nor attacking any; he simply exposes them, with all their radicalizations. He shows them to us without giving preferential treatment to any, because they are human experiences and, therefore, there are many variations that must be taken into account.
The second half of the film focuses entirely on the trial, so we find ourselves in those large courtrooms, where the accused is enclosed as if in a glass cage. Many French films I've seen with courtroom scenes depict this way, so it must be the norm for defendants to appear behind glass. I find it quite curious. I'll look up the origin of this online another day.
You might think this part would be incredibly boring, but no, dear reader, not at all. For a moment, I thought things were going to get serious and that they were going to ruin the story, but it becomes even more intense because, as I said before, the filmmaker intends to make us participants in the trial, as if the prosecutors and the defense were addressing us, asking us to act as judges.
But not with the intention of convicting. Both the prosecution and the defense have valid arguments, but in a trial, even if we dislike the defendant for being a jerk, arrogant, conceited, etc., a jury and the judges must abide by the law, because justice is achieved when it is applied and executed correctly. There will always be a dissenting voice, and it's not about both sides emerging victorious, because that's impossible; human relationships don't work that way.
Likewise, there's that gray area, part of the courtship between a man and a woman. A gray area that certain ideologies seek to demonize. If I lived in Europe, I'd be afraid to speak to any woman, even to make a suggestive remark, because now, just by looking at her, she could accuse me of harassment or abuse. The world today is upside down. And that harms the true victims of harassment or abuse.
This is a film that deserves to be seen, and you won't find an answer here that favors one side or the other. With everything shown, you must be the judge and determine guilt or innocence, whether there was abuse or not. There are two different points of view on the same event; the absolute truth is known only by two people: the accused and the alleged victim. So, the only thing left to do is objectively analyze the evidence and make a decision based on the law.
Look it up and tell me what you thought of the movie.
Me resulta bastante curioso.
