The second season premiered a few days ago and it's time to recommend this fun series that I watched last year.

A few weeks ago I came across a tweet announcing the premiere of the second season of Minx, a series that I had the opportunity to enjoy last year and that I had pending to write my opinion. I was surprised that it was renewed, although the first season is very funny, it did not have so much repercussion, compared to other series that are more popular also premiered last year (For example, El Oso).
Good scripts, setting, story and a charming cast, but with all that it was not taken into account in last year's awards season. No nomination in the comedy category. Neither at the Emmys nor at the Golden Globes. That's why I thought it wouldn't be renewed and would go on the list of good one-season series. Fortunately it didn't and I think it's about time the series got the recognition it deserves.
One thing I like about the series is that its episodes are an hour long and a lot happens in each one, which helps the story to move forward at a good pace, avoiding unnecessary fillers. In addition, it is another example of a good combination of drama, comedy and sobering themes, this time developed in a dizzying era, full of conflicts that would mark several generations.
Hace unas semanas me encontré con un tweet que anunciaba el estreno de la segunda temporada de Minx, una serie que tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar el año pasado y tenía pendiente para escribir mi opinión. Me sorprendió que fuera renovada, aunque la primera temporada es muy divertida, no tuvo tanta repercusión, comparada con otras series que son más populares también estrenadas el año pasado (Por ejemplo, The bear).
Buenos guiones, ambientación, historia y un reparto encantador, pero con todo eso no fue tomada en cuenta en la temporada de premios del año pasado. Ninguna nominación en la categoría de comedia. Ni en los Emmy ni en los Globos de Oro. Por eso pensé que no sería renovada y pasaría a la lista de buenas series de una temporada. Afortunadamente no fue así y creo que ya es hora de que la serie tenga el reconocimiento que se merece.
Una cosa que me gusta de la serie es que sus episodios duran una hora y en cada uno pasan muchas cosas, lo que ayuda a que la historia avance a buen ritmo, evitando rellenos innecesarios. Además, es otro ejemplo de buena combinación de drama, comedia y temas aleccionadores, esta vez desarrollados en una época vertiginosa, llena de conflictos que marcarían a varias generaciones.
Ellen Rapoport, creator of the series, does not have an extensive filmography, for me she was an unknown name who has been a producer of a couple of movies. Minx is her most relevant project and one in which she is focused on doing a great job, taking it in the right direction. She has assembled a group of good filmmakers, mostly women, to direct the episodes of the series.
When you tackle certain subjects, from a serious female perspective, you get good results. Minx is not shy, it is a daring series, which does not shy away from showing full frontal nudity and funny situations revolving around sex. The plot deserves it and it never falls into exploitation, everything is justified.
What is the plot?
Joyce Prigger is a talented, intelligent, conservative-minded and very feminist woman, for her it is important to defend the rights of women in the city of Los Angeles in 1972. She has a project in mind, to make a magazine that brings together women and is a flag of feminists, the problem is that no publisher trusts her ideas, they do not like neither the names nor the proposed content, that would hardly succeed. Fate will make Doug Renetti, an editor of adult magazines and unorthodox methods, cross her path. The two will form a disparate team, facing many difficulties to launch a new magazine called Minx, which mixes feminist articles with pictures of naked men that will captivate readers. Will they succeed? Are the people of the time ready for such a magazine?
Ellen Rapoport, creadora de la serie, no tiene una filmografía extensa, para mí era un nombre desconocido que ha sido productora de un par de películas. Minx es su proyecto más relevante y en el que está centrada en hacer un gran trabajo, llevándolo en la dirección correcta. Ha reunido a un grupo de buenos cineastas, en su mayoría mujeres, para dirigir los episodios de la serie.
Cuando se abordan ciertos temas, desde una perspectiva femenina seria, se obtienen buenos resultados. Minx no es tímida, es una serie atrevida, que no rehúye mostrar desnudos frontales y situaciones divertidas que giran en torno al sexo. La trama lo merece y nunca cae en la explotación, todo está justificado.

Joyce Prigger es una mujer con talento, inteligente, de mentalidad conservadora y muy feminista, para ella es importante defender los derechos de la mujer en la ciudad de Los Ángeles en 1972. Tiene un proyecto en mente, hacer una revista que aglutine a las mujeres y sea bandera de las feministas, el problema es que ninguna editorial confía en sus ideas, no les gustan ni los nombres ni el contenido propuesto, eso difícilmente tendría éxito. El destino hará que se cruce en su camino Doug Renetti, un editor de revistas para adultos y métodos poco ortodoxos. Ambos formarán un equipo dispar, enfrentándose a muchas dificultades para sacar adelante una nueva revista llamada Minx, que mezcla artículos feministas con fotos de hombres desnudos que cautivarán a los lectores. ¿Tendrán éxito? ¿Está la gente de la época preparada para una revista así?

While watching the series I couldn't help but feel nostalgic for times gone by, when there was no internet and one of the sources of information and entertainment for many people were newspapers and especially magazines. When I was a kid I loved reading magazines on all kinds of subjects, I liked to keep the ones that came with the newspapers on Sundays and reread them from time to time. I wanted to be an adult to work in a magazine, a dream I half fulfilled by having a digital magazine in the Internet era. Today magazines are still published all over the world, but thousands have disappeared since the immediacy of the Internet took over.
The series takes us into the heart of this project called Minx, showing all the ins and outs of how to edit a magazine, looking for a team, columnists, photographers, models, advertisers and investors who believe that the project will be successful and profitable. A titanic task, in which two people from completely different worlds must learn to work with a team of people, facing many obstacles along the way.
It is in the clash of the two main characters where the funniest situations will occur and where the good acting work of the entire cast stands out.
Mientras veía la serie no podía evitar sentir nostalgia de tiempos pasados, cuando no existía internet y una de las fuentes de información y entretenimiento para mucha gente eran los periódicos y sobre todo las revistas. Cuando era niño me encantaba leer revistas de todo tipo de temas, me gustaba guardar las que venían con los periódicos los domingos y releerlas de vez en cuando. Quería ser adulto para trabajar en una revista, un sueño que cumplí a medias al tener una revista digital en la era de Internet. Hoy en día se siguen publicando revistas en todo el mundo, pero miles han desaparecido desde que la inmediatez de Internet tomo el relevo.
La serie nos adentra en el corazón de este proyecto llamado Minx, mostrando todos los entresijos de cómo editar una revista, buscando un equipo, columnistas, fotógrafos, modelos, anunciantes e inversores que crean que el proyecto tendrá éxito y dará beneficios. Una tarea titánica, en la que dos personas de mundos completamente diferentes deben aprender a trabajar con un equipo de personas, enfrentándose a muchos obstáculos por el camino.
Es en el choque de los dos personajes principales donde se darán las situaciones más divertidas y donde destaca el buen trabajo interpretativo de todo el reparto.
Joyce Prigger is the protagonist of the story, she has the idea of a feminist magazine, where renowned women writers are columnists and fight for women's rights. But sometimes we don't get what we want in its entirety and we have to adapt to situations. Frustrated and hurt at not being taken into account, she accepts Doug's offer to create a magazine that would be the counterpart to Playboy, aimed at a female audience, with photographs of naked men. Joyce is played by British-born Ophelia Lovibond, bringing candor, naiveté and strength to a very fussy character.
Doug Renetti is a wolf, a rogue, with ties to all sorts of people in the adult film and magazine industry. He lives in chaos, on the edge of everything, but he's also adept at getting himself out of trouble. He needs a publishing success to keep him going and has business acumen, only the excesses and lifestyle are a disaster. But he is the only one who believes in Joyce. The interaction between them will have us laughing on many occasions. He is played by Jake Johnson and he plays it very well, I loved his character. He is one of my favorites. I already watched the first episode of the second season and he is still the same Doug.
Richie is another one of my favorite characters in the series. He is the gay photographer for the magazine and each of his appearances is accompanied by funny moments. He is a kind-hearted character, with a lot of talent to create the magazine's photos, he loves his job, even if it is not as well paid as he deserves. He is played by Oscar Montoya, an actor I didn't know, but he conveys the necessary sympathy for his character.
Shelly is Joyce's sister, a typical American housewife, lives in a nice suburb, has a husband and children, all this world full of women and men with experience in the adult industry, will make her rethink some things in her life and will suffer a big change, something she will continue to deal with in the second season. This character is played by Lennan Parham.
Tina and Bambi are part of Doug's team to move the magazine forward. They are uninhibited, liberal and will play an important role in the subplots of the story and characters described above. They are played by Idara Victor and Jessica Lowe.

Es un personaje de buen corazón, con mucho talento para crear las fotos de la revista, le encanta su trabajo, aunque no esté tan bien pagado como se merece. Está interpretado por Oscar Montoya, un actor que no conocía, pero que transmite la simpatía necesaria por su personaje.
