Nightsiren (Svetlonoc)

My recommendation today is "Slovak Folk Horror." Once again, we find ourselves in a village whose name I can't recall, or perhaps it's never mentioned. What is certain is that it's a rural, mountainous, and cold setting: a perfect atmosphere, characteristic of these captivating folk horror stories.

It's not an easy film for a viewer accustomed to linear and conventional Hollywood productions, so you'll have to make an effort to connect with this story set in that Slovak village where superstitions and beliefs in witchcraft abound.

I watched this film because of its star, actress Natalia Germani, whom I already mentioned in the post about the film "Her Body." Since her filmography is short, I'm trying to find most of her work. In the film, she plays Sarlota, a woman who left her village as a child (we'll see why at the beginning) and who, years later, as an adult, returns at the mayor's request to claim her mother's inheritance. (It seems so.)

Here, the horror is revealed gradually, in measured doses, with images that fascinated me. But the core of the story also lies in portraying a culture, common to many communities around the world, where women are often abused by their husbands or relatives. The narrative is very powerful in this respect because it's something that happens in many communities.

The director is Tereza Nvotová, whose last film, Father, I still haven't seen. It received many positive reviews and accolades. In fact, this film was also acclaimed at the Locarno and Sitges film festivals. Its protagonists are women, and of course there's a message of female empowerment, but here I see it as justified and restrained; it's not anti-male propaganda, it simply portrays a reality using elements of supernatural witchcraft.

Actress Natalia Germani isn't the only one who stands out in this story; she's joined by actress Eva Mores, who plays Mira. Mores also does an excellent job, and both of them keep the story engaging. The dramatic part of the film revolves around them, where the wounds of the past need to heal. Karla returns to that town, mainly because she wants to exorcise the guilt for what happened before she left.

It's this mix of personal dramas and the belief in witches that makes the film so interesting. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and it has a rather intense ending, where the anger of a town takes over, offering us scenes of violence and chaos. Of course, with this film, you also have to be open-minded to accept some of the customs, traditions, and behaviors of the culture that are reflected on screen.

I hope there are other film buffs with tastes as unusual as mine who find it a good film. Leave your opinion in the comments.

What they're doing is ruining the experience for those who truly enjoy watching movies and discovering surprises. Mi recomendación de hoy es "Terror Folclórico Eslovaco". Una vez más, nos encontramos en un pueblo cuyo nombre no recuerdo, o quizás nunca lo mencionan. Lo que sí es seguro es que se trata de un entorno rural, montañoso y frío: una atmósfera perfecta, característica de estas historias de terror folclórico tan cautivadoras.

No es una película fácil para un espectador acostumbrado a las producciones lineales y convencionales de Hollywood, así que tendrás que esforzarte para conectar con esta historia ambientada en ese pueblo eslovaco donde abundan las supersticiones y las creencias en la brujería.

Vi esta película por su protagonista, la actriz Natalia Germani, a quien ya mencioné en la entrada sobre la película "Su Cuerpo". Como su filmografía es corta, estoy intentando encontrar la mayor parte de su trabajo. En la película, interpreta a Sarlota, una mujer que abandonó su pueblo de niña (veremos el motivo al principio) y que, años después, ya adulta, regresa a petición del alcalde para reclamar la herencia de su madre. (Eso parece.)

Aquí, el horror se revela gradualmente, en dosis medidas, con imágenes que me fascinaron. Pero el núcleo de la historia reside también en retratar una cultura, común a muchas comunidades alrededor del mundo, donde las mujeres suelen ser maltratadas por sus maridos o familiares. La narrativa es muy poderosa en este aspecto, porque es algo que sucede en muchas comunidades.

La directora es Tereza Nvotová, cuya última película del año pasado, Padre, aún tengo pendiente de ver. Recibió muchas críticas positivas y elogios. De hecho, esta película también fue aclamada en los festivales de cine de Locarno y Sitges. Sus protagonistas son mujeres, y por supuesto hay un mensaje de empoderamiento femenino, pero aquí lo veo justificado y contenido; no es propaganda antimascullina, simplemente retrata una realidad utilizando elementos de brujería sobrenatural.

Es esta mezcla de dramas personales y la creencia en brujas lo que hace que la película sea tan interesante. La disfruté bastante, y tiene un final bastante intenso, donde la ira de un pueblo toma el control, ofreciéndonos escenas de violencia y caos. Por supuesto, en esta película también hay que tener la mente abierta para aceptar algunas de las costumbres, tradiciones y comportamientos de la cultura que se reflejan en la pantalla.

PD: Aunque sé que nadie va a leer esta posdata, quería dejarla aquí de todos modos: He dejado de leer las publicaciones de películas porque solo revelan spoilers o cuentan toda la trama, lo cual no tiene sentido. Lo que hacen es arruinar la experiencia de quienes realmente disfrutan viendo películas y descubriendo sorpresas. Cada quien escribe lo que quiere, pero en serio, tengan un poco de respeto, porque quienes somos apasionados del cine no andamos por ahí revelando la trama de las películas. En mis publicaciones, no digo nada importante sobre la trama ni revelo sorpresas; la idea es dar una opinión, una reflexión, y dejar que la gente decida si quiere verla. No hagan resúmenes; eso no tiene sentido, y además, un resumen se puede copiar de cualquier parte de internet y para mi ese tipo d epublicaicnes son sospechosas.
