It's been about two months since I saw the first season of this entertaining series that doesn't seem to have had much circulation. It doesn't seem fair to me, it is a worthwhile production and I will try to convince you to watch it.

It is another of the series of Apple TV that this year is breaking it with the quality of the series that premieres on its platform. I have also been very pleased with this adaptation of Mick Herron's work. I have only read the first book about eight years ago, although I liked the novel, due to lack of time I did not keep track of it and I have not been able to read all the other books starring that amazing character named Jackson Lamb.
Lamb is a character with a very black sense of humor, capable of saying the most pointed words to anyone, a bit scruffy looking, he likes to spend the day sleeping in his office, drinking, eating greasy food and farting all over the place. Yes, a very peculiar character. He makes himself hated by everyone, but at the same time he is one of the best spies.
The choice of Gary Oldman seems right to me, although when I read the first novel I imagined him differently, Oldman adapts the character to his style, making him less unpleasant. Of course, the actor's talent is very great and he keeps the balance between the dramatic situations and the more bizarre aspects that will make us laugh. Watching Gary Oldman fart is a fun experience. The way he treats everyone will also be very funny, even though we are in the middle of a dangerous situation where people may die, the character seemingly always keeps his cool.
Forget about that image that other British spy movies give us, where MI5 agents dress up and have a life of luxury and lots of travel. Here there is no James Bond or glamorous Bond girls. On the contrary, the spies are destined for a slum and their lives are a complete mess.
This is what is fascinating about this adaptation, which knows how to agglomerate all the spirit of the novel, placing us in the darkest corners of the city, there are no palaces or luxurious houses, what there are are alleys and sewers where our characters will have to do their job.

Es otra de las series de Apple Tv que este año la está rompiendo con la calidad de las series que estrena en su plataforma. También he quedado muy satisfecho con esta adaptación de la obra de Mick Herron. Sólo he leído el primer libro hace unos ocho años, aunque la novela me gustó, por falta de tiempo no le seguí la pista y no he podido leer todos los demás libros protagonizados por ese increíble personaje llamado Jackson Lamb.
Lamb es un personaje con un sentido del humor muy negro, capaz de decir las palabras más punzantes a cualquiera, de aspecto un poco desaliñado, le gusta pasarse el día durmiendo en su despacho, bebiendo, comiendo comida grasienta y tirándose pedos por todas partes. Sí, un personaje muy peculiar. Se hace odiar por todos, pero al mismo tiempo es uno de los mejores espías.
La elección de Gary Oldman me parece acertada, aunque cuando leí la primera novela me lo imaginaba diferente, Oldman adapta el personaje a su estilo, haciéndolo menos desagradable. Desde luego, el talento del actor es muy grande y mantiene el equilibrio entre las situaciones dramáticas y los aspectos más bizarros que nos harán reír. Ver a Gary Oldman tirarse un pedo es una experiencia divertida. También será muy divertida la forma en que trata a todo el mundo, aunque estemos en medio de una situación peligrosa en la que puede morir gente, el personaje aparentemente siempre mantiene la calma.
Olvídate de esa imagen que nos ofrecen otras películas de espías británicos, donde los agentes del MI5 visten elegantemente y tienen una vida de lujo y muchos viajes. Aquí no hay ningún James Bond ni chicas Bond glamurosas. Al contrario, los espías están destinados a un tugurio y sus vidas son un completo desastre.
Esto es lo fascinante de esta adaptación, que sabe aglomerar todo el espíritu de la novela, situándonos en los rincones más oscuros de la ciudad, no hay palacios ni casas lujosas, lo que hay son callejones y alcantarillas donde nuestros personajes tendrán que hacer su trabajo.
What is the plot of the series?
River Cartwright is an ambitious MI5 agent who makes a serious mistake in a training against terrorism and as punishment is removed from headquarters and reassigned to The Swamp, a division of the spy agency where they send all agents discarded for some reason. This is the derogatory name given to all those assigned to La Cienega. At first glance it may seem that they are a bunch of idiots who have ended up in the worst place in the world. Why the hell don't they quit? They are willing to risk their lives for the safety of their country and the same agency sends them to the worst place in the world where they are only going to do menial jobs, paperwork and get scolded by the boss.
Why are they there? The reason is a punishment for making mistakes in some mission, but Cartwright is sent there because of a mistake in a training, at least that's what we think at first. Is it true, is there something else we don't know? Don't think they are bad agents, they are actually good at their job, just because of some events in their past they have been punished.
I was amused by a couple of scenes in which they make reference to one of the agents being sent there for sleeping with the Venezuelan ambassador's wife. This is repeated two or three times.
The only one who is there of his own free will is Lamb. To him, most of them are useless and he is reminded of this every time he has to communicate with them. Especially Cartwright. He doesn't want to get too involved in the case of the kidnapped child, but he doesn't know that there are more powerful interests that will force him to participate in the operation and thus save his life and the lives of the losers he has as a team.
Spy Game
Do you like spy stories? If the answer is yes, you will like the series. Although we will not see much glamor, if this present intrigue, betrayals and action that characterizes this type of stories. Many betrayals and plot twists make each episode very entertaining and make us want to watch the next one immediately.
Although the main protagonists are Cartwright and Lamb, there is plenty of time to see a bit of the lives of the other agents. Each with his or her problems, like anyone else, which makes these spies quite believable. Loneliness, failed marriages, financial problems change the image we have of what spies are like. Of course, it is inevitable that some cliché characters are used, for example, the tech expert who can hack almost anything.
Humor?
I don't consider the series to be a comedy, but like the novel, it has a lot of dark humor. I'm aware that there are many viewers who don't like this kind of humor, but I think it's great and that's what makes me love all six episodes.
Even the whole scene of the group of criminals kidnapping the boy, which has a lot of tension and danger, is sprinkled with a bit of black humor. That's why I liked the adaptation, it made me laugh several times even though the subject matter is quite serious. Lamb takes the cake with the best lines and situations that will make us cringe a bit at the character, but we will also be fascinated by that very corrosive and funny personality.
The weight of the past
Something happened in Lamb's past that led him to make the decision to ask to be assigned to La Cienega. That nefarious place where no one wants to be, he seems to have turned it into his personal hell to atone for all his sins. There is a great mystery about his past that goes back to some event that happened after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In this first season we will see some brief flashbacks that will raise a lot of questions about the character and give us a little insight into what happened.
I hope they continue to delve into the character's past. Wait a minute, will there be more seasons? The good news is that the second season was shot simultaneously and at the end of the sixth episode we are shown a preview of the story that will be tackled in the next season. But that's not all, I think the series was well received by critics and they have approved to make a third and fourth season ( I have to look for information about this) and if things continue well, I don't doubt that they will announce a fifth season, to cover all the books that have been published.
Slow Horses is a very fun spy series, they are short seasons, easy to watch and Gary Oldman owns the show. I assure you that you will love the character he plays and you will become attached to this group of slightly bumbling spies, but who are really willing to risk their lives to keep the world safe.

Los Slow Horses
Este es el nombre despectivo que reciben todos los que están asignados a La Ciénaga. A primera vista puede parecer que son una panda de idiotas que han acabado en el peor sitio del mundo. ¿Por qué demonios no renuncian? Están dispuestos a arriesgar sus vidas por la seguridad de su país y la misma agencia los envía al peor lugar del mundo donde sólo van a hacer trabajos serviles, papeleo y ser regañados por el jefe.
¿Por qué están allí? El motivo es un castigo por cometer errores en alguna misión, pero Cartwright es enviado allí por un error en un entrenamiento, al menos eso es lo que pensamos al principio. ¿Es cierto, hay algo más que no sabemos? No creas que son malos agentes, en realidad son buenos en su trabajo, solo que por algunos sucesos de su pasado han sido castigados.
Me hizo gracia un par de escenas en las que hacen referencia a que uno de los agentes fue enviado allí por haberse acostado con la mujer del embajador venezolano. Esto se repite dos o tres veces.
El único que está allí por voluntad propia es Lamb. Para él, la mayoría son inútiles y se lo recuerdan cada vez que tiene que comunicarse con ellos. Especialmente Cartwright. No quiere involucrarse demasiado en el caso del niño secuestrado, pero no sabe que hay intereses más poderosos que le obligarán a participar en la operación y así salvar su vida y la de los perdedores que tiene como equipo.
Juego de espías
¿Te gustan las historias de espías? Si la respuesta es sí, la serie te gustará. Aunque no veremos mucho glamour, si esta presente la intriga, las traiciones y la acción que caracteriza a este tipo de historias. Muchas traiciones y giros en la trama hacen que cada episodio sea muy entretenido y que queramos ver el siguiente de inmediato.
Aunque los protagonistas principales son Cartwright y Lamb, hay tiempo suficiente para ver un poco de la vida de los demás agentes. Cada uno con sus problemas, como cualquiera, lo que hace que estos espías sean bastante creíbles. La soledad, los matrimonios fallidos, los problemas económicos cambian la imagen que tenemos de cómo son los espías. Por supuesto, es inevitable que se utilicen algunos personajes tópicos, por ejemplo, el experto en tecnología que puede hackear casi todo.
¿Humor?
No considero que la serie sea una comedia, pero al igual que la novela, tiene mucho humor negro. Soy consciente de que hay muchos espectadores a los que no les gusta este tipo de humor, pero a mí me parece genial y es lo que hace que los seis episodios me encantaran.
Incluso toda la escena del grupo de criminales secuestrando al niño, que tiene mucha tensión y peligro, está salpicada de un poco de humor negro. Por eso me ha gustado la adaptación, me ha hecho reír varias veces a pesar de que el tema es bastante serio. Lamb se lleva el premio con las mejores frases y situaciones que nos harán sentir un poco de rechazo hacia el personaje, pero también nos fascinará esa personalidad tan corrosiva y divertida.
El peso del pasado
Algo ocurrió en el pasado de Lamb que le llevó a tomar la decisión de pedir que le destinaran a La Ciénaga. Ese nefasto lugar donde nadie quiere estar, parece que lo ha convertido en su infierno personal para expiar todos sus pecados. Hay un gran misterio sobre su pasado que se remonta a algún suceso ocurrido tras la caída del muro de Berlín. En esta primera temporada veremos unos breves flashbacks que nos harán plantearnos muchas preguntas sobre el personaje y nos darán una pequeña idea de lo que pasó.
Espero que sigan profundizando en el pasado del personaje. Un momento. ¿Habrá más temporadas? La buena noticia es que la segunda temporada se rodó de forma simultánea y al final del sexto episodio se nos muestra un avance de la historia que se abordará en la siguiente temporada. Pero eso no es todo, creo que la serie fue bien recibida por la crítica y han aprobado hacer una tercera y cuarta temporada ( tengo que buscar información sobre esto) y si las cosas siguen bien, no dudo que anuncien una quinta temporada, para cubrir todos los libros que se han publicado.
Slow Horses es una serie de espías muy divertida, son temporadas cortas, fáciles de ver y Gary Oldman es el dueño de la serie. Te aseguro que te encantará el personaje que interpreta y te encariñarás con este grupo de espías un poco torpes, pero que realmente están dispuestos a arriesgar sus vidas para mantener el mundo a salvo.
