Review by @jcrodriguez · 2021d · of Tenet

I finally got to see Tenet and I am totally ecstatic about the story directed by film magician Christopher Nolan.

What is the plot of Tenet?

The protagonist, whose real name we will never know, is recruited by a secret organization, where he will be assigned a mission, and must prevent a dangerous arms dealer named Sator from gathering nine pieces of a device called The Algorithm. Sator works for an organization of the future, that same future in which scientists created a way to reverse the flow of time in people and objects. The protagonist will use Kat, Sator's wife, to get to him, and will also have the help of Neil, a man who assigned him the organization, but who seems to know more than he says. Temporary jumps, people and objects with inverted times, a battle that defies all logic, to prevent Sator from destroying the world with the Algortimo.

Space-time paradoxes have been a constant in Nolan's films, ever since he called the world's attention with the film Memento, where the story was told backwards, from the end to the beginning. Inception, Interestellar, Dunkerque, etc. are other films in which the filmmaker plays with time as a narrative resource.

Tenet deals with concepts of physics, such as Entropy in objects and people, something I briefly reviewed on the Internet, which many scientists and physics geniuses have studied. I think even Stephen Hawking did studies on Entropy, I don't know anything about that! I was a very bad student of physics and chemistry and it gives me a headache to read scientific theories that I don't understand. I am interested in what Nolan does with this physics concept, turning it into a spy, action and science fiction show.

I am not going to make a spoiler of the story, because this has to be seen, to enjoy each beautifully executed scene. Don't try to find a logical explanation for anything. Besides, if you are not a scientist, what does it matter that the film has things that you are not going to understand or assimilate instantly. You just have to sit back and enjoy the show the filmmaker has put together.

Even the protagonist, in one of the scenes, which you see in the trailer, says that he doesn't understand anything about what is happening. Well, some viewers will feel like him. The important thing is that it is a total ecstasy to see this story full of inverse times, where the bullet instead of coming out shoots, returns to the gun. Destroyed cars that go in reverse time and return to their original state, temporal jumps and a surprise turn that will remind us of the eternal question in many productions where time is a determining factor: What came first, the chicken or the egg?

The illusionist Nolan returns to delight us with his magic tricks. It takes just over two hours to forget our reality and let ourselves be carried away by the world the filmmaker has created. When all the pieces of the intricate plot come together, we will be delighted to have enjoyed this great show.

It is unfortunate that I have not been able to see this film in a movie theater. I now understand Nolan's insistence that it be released in theaters. It is a film that must necessarily be seen in theaters, to obtain greater ecstasy.

The Cast

John David Washington, Denzel Washington's successful son, is the one who plays the main character in the story, the spy who will have the responsibility to save the world. After being recruited by a secret organization that wants to prevent those of the future from destroying the world. The actor's performance didn't impress me much, I liked the actor in the movie BlacKkKlansman, but in Tenet, there were moments when I found it hard to believe in the character, but it was only at the beginning, as the plot progressed, that I improved my perception of the protagonist.

Robert Pattinson plays Neil, the man assigned to help the protagonist fulfill his mission. His character is somewhat mysterious, we can even think that he is a double agent. The final revelation of this character is one of the surprises of the film and that made me like the story and the character more. Pattison has already proven for years that he is one of the best actors of the present time, his role in Tenet is secondary, but of vital importance. I look forward to seeing him in the upcoming Batman movie.

Elizabeth Debicki plays Kat, Sator's long-suffering wife. She will also play an important role in saving the world from destruction. The protagonist will use her to get to Sator, but then he will feel responsible for her safety and that of his son. I love this actress and enjoy watching her in all the films in which she appears. I have been saying for a long time that she is an actress with a lot of potential, in the next seasons of the series The Crown will play Princess Diana.

Sir Kenneth Branagh plays the super bad guy in the story, Sator, the Russian arms dealer millionaire. He is the least loved character in the story, because he is a very flat villain, his motivations do not convince me. Anyway, the excellent actor plays the assigned role of being the villain to beat, before he destroys the world.

There is something that happens in other Nolan films that I have always criticized, they are the action scenes and the hand-to-hand fights, they are always confusing, but if those who intervene in the scenes wear masks. For example, in Nolan's first two Batman films, this also happened.

Shooting action scenes and making them see and clearly understand who is hitting whom, is a little difficult. There are Asian directors who are experts at making these kinds of scenes, and of the Westerners, currently Gareth Evans, is the only one who leaves me satisfied in his way of filming fights and action scenes.

You love it or you hate it.

Christopher Nolan is a British filmmaker who unleashes passions, both good and negative. Internet articles, forums and pages where film lovers can express their opinions are full of heated debates, often ending in fights, between those who are die-hard Nolan fans and those who hate him, who only have negative opinions, daring to say that Nolan is a smoke vendor.

I respect everyone's tastes, and they have the right to dislike the style of some filmmaker. But I have read many outrages against Nolan, which are for laughs. With the release of Tenet, the debate has been hot, so I tried not to get involved in any of them until I had the chance to see it.

Nolan, whether you like it or not, is one of the most important filmmakers of our time, with an extraordinary talent for creating stories that will leave us with our mouths hanging open. He is a magician of the show, he knows how to make a film that makes an impact.

It was in the year 2000 when this filmmaker surprised me, after seeing that cinematic jewel called Memento. From that moment on I became a fan of Nolan's career. Then came Insomnia, with Al Pacino hunting a murderer played by the late Robin Williams and I knew he would become a great filmmaker.

The consecration came when he was commissioned a version of Batman, my only favorite superhero. The superhero's restart, after the franchise began in '89 with TimBurton's Batman, was sold out. Thanks to Nolan, we saw a more realistic and adult tone. But the best was yet to come, when I premiered the sequel to his Batman, with the late Ledger doing the best Joker ever (Phoeneix is fabulous as a Joker, but Heath Ledger is still the best for me).

Between Nolan's first two Batman films, the filmmaker had time to make another great film, The Prestige, a thriller that told the battle between two magicians, two masters of illusionism.

That's what Nolan is, he's a wizard of modern cinema, an expert illusionist who keeps our attention, and even if we don't understand some of the tricks we see on the screen, we are absolutely amazed.

That's why I love Nolan's cinema, some films more than others, but none of them leave me indifferent. They all have an incredible amount of scenes, a visual spectacle that I enjoy like a child eating a giant candy.

I hope you are one of those who enjoy Tenet.

My Ranking: 4/5
