The Damned

One of the current trends in horror cinema focuses on creating unsettling atmospheres. In this case, it's a film I saw a few months ago and have been eager to recommend. It belongs to the folklore horror subgenre and is set in Iceland—a perfect setting for creating striking images that contribute to the story's terrifying nature.

It's directed by Icelandic filmmaker Thordur Palsson, whose previous work was on the series The Valhalla Murders. I think he garnered attention with The Condemned; the film was screened at the Sitges Film Festival, and the director's next project is an adaptation of the video game Dead by Daylight. After seeing his work on The Condemned, I'm very excited to see this new film.

The story takes place in the 19th century in a region of Iceland where fishermen work. It's a world of sailors, though this one is ruled by a woman. This part didn't seem entirely believable to me, but it's the beautiful Odessa Young who plays Eva, the widow who must assume the role of leader of the household with this group of rough, calloused, fishy-smelling men.

That maritime environment has always been steeped in superstition. I think that even today, those who dedicate themselves to fishing have their rituals, superstitions, and beliefs. The characters in this film even more so, since it's set two centuries ago, when they were very devout in their religion, in addition to believing in myths and rituals from their Viking past. It's the perfect combination for most of them to fall into a kind of paranoia after the events that trigger the story's conflict.

The mind can play tricks on us, especially if we are devout believers in a religion, giving supernatural explanations to everything we can't coherently explain. That's why the film also delves into psychological horror. Is everything we see real? Is it a curse for having done what they had to do? This group of characters is doomed, either because something is starting to kill them or because they are victims of their own madness.

The mostly male cast fits their roles perfectly. Many convey the toughness and brutality typical of sailors. The actor who played The Mountain in Game of Thrones is one of them. Another actor who appeared in House of the Dragon also participates. The most attractive of all is Joe Cole, whom many will recognize from the series Peaky Blinders. He undoubtedly has the best chemistry with the character of Eve.

At times, it reminded me of other films in the "epic horror" subgenre, and here it focuses on the psychological aspect of the characters and pays special attention to the visual aspect, as I mentioned at the beginning. Certainly, that is its most striking aspect, which I like, but I also notice that many films are overexploiting this style, and there may come a time when it no longer has the same appeal.

Una de las tendencias actuales en el cine de terror se centra en crear atmósferas inquietantes. En este caso, se trata de una película que vi hace unos meses y que tenía muchas ganas de recomendar. Pertenece al subgénero del terror folclórico y está ambientada en Islandia. Un escenario perfecto para crear imágenes impactantes que contribuyen a que esta historia sea aterradora.

Está dirigida por el cineasta islandés Thordur Palsson, cuyo trabajo anterior fue en la serie Los asesinatos de Valhalla. Creo que logró llamar la atención con Los condenados; la película participó en el Festival de Cine de Sitges, y el próximo proyecto del director es una adaptación del videojuego Dead by Daylight. Tras ver su trabajo en Los condenados, tengo muchas ganas de ver esta nueva película.

La historia transcurre en el siglo XIX en una región de Islandia donde trabajan los pescadores. Es un mundo de marineros, aunque este está gobernado por una mujer. Esta parte no me pareció del todo creíble, pero es la bella Odessa Young quien interpreta a Eva, la viuda que debe asumir el rol de líder de la casa con ese grupo de hombres rudos, de manos callosas y con olor a pescado.

Ese ambiente marinero siempre ha estado rodeado de supersticiones. Creo que hoy en día, quienes se dedican a la pesca tienen sus rituales, supersticiones y creencias. Los personajes de esta película aún más, ya que está ambientada dos siglos atrás, donde eran muy devotos de su religión, además de creer en mitos y rituales de su pasado vikingo. Es la combinación perfecta para que la mayoría de ellos caigan en una especie de paranoia tras los eventos que desencadenan el conflicto de la historia.

La mente puede jugarnos malas pasadas, especialmente si somos creyentes devotos de una religión, dando explicaciones sobrenaturales a todo aquello que no podemos explicar coherentemente. Por eso la película también se adentra en el terror psicológico. ¿Es todo lo que vemos verdad? ¿Es una maldición por haber hecho lo que tenían que hacer? Este grupo de personajes está condenado, ya sea porque algo comienza a matarlos o porque son víctimas de su propia locura.

El reparto, mayoritariamente masculino, encaja a la perfección en sus papeles. Muchos transmiten la dureza y la brutalidad propias de los marineros. El actor que interpretó a La Montaña en Juego de Tronos es uno de ellos. También participa otro actor que apareció en La Casa del Dragón. El más atractivo de todos es Joe Cole, a quien muchos reconocerán por su participación en la serie Peaky Blinders. Sin duda, es quien tendrá mayor química con el personaje de Eve.

En ocasiones me recordó a otras películas del subgénero del "terror épico", y aquí se centra en el aspecto psicológico de los personajes y presta especial atención al aspecto visual, como mencioné al principio. Ciertamente, ese es su aspecto más llamativo, que me gusta, pero también noto que muchas películas están sobreexplotando este estilo, y puede que llegue un momento en que ya no tenga el mismo atractivo.
