This is one of those strange yet fascinating films—the kind that brings a smile to my face thanks to its delightful dark humor. I recommend it to anyone who shares my cinematic tastes; you’ll enjoy it from start to finish. It is a work for those who—like the director—appreciate seeing plenty of blood and a bit of sex amidst a bizarre, even grotesque, story.
Perhaps that is precisely what makes many people uncomfortable. Nowadays, political correctness is so deeply ingrained in the majority mindset that anything straying from that line is labeled bad, vulgar, or worthless. I understand that tastes vary—I, for instance, can't stand Korean dramas—but I love cinema, and even when dealing with things that don't personally appeal to me, I can still appreciate their positive aspects.
The trailer describes it as a macabre tale, and it certainly is. It immerses us in rural Argentina—in the country's deepest, most remote reaches—within a tiny village. In my country, a settlement of barely twenty people is called a caserío (hamlet); I’m sure there’s a specific term for it where you live, too. There’s a saying: "Small town, big hell," and this story reflects that perfectly.
The plot revolves around Ercilia, an elderly, ailing, and somewhat unhinged woman. She has two children: Roberta, the town beauty and most sought-after prostitute; and Raulo, the eldest, who has an intellectual disability. He is the town "fool"—that sort of innocent, kind-hearted soul whom people treat with condescension. Oh, Raulo... how you are going to suffer.
I loved the setting, the cinematography, and the mise-en-scène. I laughed quite a bit at the dark, unhinged humor, as well as at grotesque situations that might seem absurd to many. It is a small town teeming with eccentric characters, where hypocrisy, lust, and sin seem to mirror the current state of society. The director likely intended to portray it this way precisely to convey that message.
The horror doesn't kick in until the final act, but I had already enjoyed the journey leading up to it; the climax was like dessert, leaving me more than satisfied with the film. Madness and graphic violence take center stage, and I found myself jumping in my seat at every exquisitely bloody scene.
The director is Valentín Javier Diment, a versatile filmmaker—as many Latin American directors must be—who has to work with limited resources and rely on imagination to create the best possible movie. The effort put into achieving such a great result really shows. I had already seen his film Diablo—which I plan to rewatch soon for a future post—and I am currently catching up on his filmography, with several more titles still on my watchlist. If any of them are worth it, rest assured I’ll recommend them.
The cast is led by Marilú Marini, a veteran actress well-known in her native country. The director himself plays one of the characters. Paula Brasca plays Roberta and does a fantastic job—she is an actress unafraid to expose herself both physically and emotionally—but the one who truly stands out and earns the highest praise is actor Luis Ziembrowski in the role of Raulo.
I’m not sure if this film will appeal to mainstream audiences, but I hope to find someone in this community—another cinephile with eccentric tastes like mine. In the nine years I’ve been around—dating back to the old platform—I’ve sadly never met anyone with similar tastes.
I hope you give this peculiar and fascinating gem of Argentine cinema a chance. Let me know what you think in the comments, whether you liked it or not.
Ay, Raulo... cuánto vas a sufrir.
