A crime thriller set in a remote village, where a mysterious serial killer is hunting girls in the woods.

Rayburn is a former hunter who is now in charge of the protection of an area that was catalogued as a sanctuary, an area where hunting is prohibited. When he's not doing his job, he's drinking whiskey at home. Rayburn has been trying to find his daughter, who went missing five years ago. The girl was 14 years old.

The character is haunted by that disappearance, there is no trace of his daughter and for the police it seems to be a case they are no longer interested in solving. His ex-wife now lives with Blackhawk, the sheriff of the Indian reservation.

On the other hand, there is the new sheriff Gustafson, who has only been in office for months, and has a younger brother who is traumatized by having been abused by his adoptive parents. He seems to be a correct and law-abiding character. His brother seems like a kid who's constantly getting into trouble.

These characters will cross paths in their lives when the body of a girl, who was hunted, is discovered in the river. Everything seems to indicate that there is a crazy killer who is hunting girls in that area.

The story has enough elements to make it very interesting, the location, in that beautiful forest, the town and the Indian reservation, the missing girls, a serial killer and all the characters with a stormy past. It actually all works, it even has some effective plot twists, maybe a little forced, but really effective in making the beat vibrant.

There is a moment when viewers will deduce who the mysterious hunter is that kills the girls, but the film will not try to keep the mystery alive until the last minute. We will quickly be shown who the killer is, although the reasons for killing the girls are not convincing. It's the resolution that I found a little clumsy, but overall, it's a good film.

It's an American-Canadian production. There are many productions made in Canada with this same style. They are films with interesting stories, always related to the criminal world, and with a very good cast. They are films that don't disappoint, ideal to fill the streaming catalogue and be a good entertainment for the weekend. Belgian filmmaker Robin Pront is the director of the film. This would be his fourth production, his previous works include some films in the horror genre. That's why the last part of this film, takes place in the forest at night, giving it a terrifying atmosphere, between the hunter and the last prey. I have no complaints about the direction, I see it as very solvent, I hope to see other works by Robin Pront in the future.

Actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays the main character Rayburn. The famous actor, known worldwide for the Game of Thrones series, makes another attempt to launch his film career. His character is a man torn apart by the disappearance of his daughter. Alone, bitter and alcoholic, he takes care of the animals he hunted in his past. Nikolaj gives him enough credibility for us to empathize with Rayburn.

This type of character is a constant in Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's career, with similarities to other characters in previous films. It's difficult for an actor to become known for a specific character in such a successful series, he easily gives up on that. I hope that soon the actor will find a suitable production that will give him another success, for the time being he will be recognised as the king-slayer.

I liked the character Reyburn, because he is not a super man, nor is he an indestructible person, as they would have done in other productions of this style. On the contrary, the character spends a large part of the film, running for his life, wounded by an arrow, shot, always suffering. The beautiful actress Annabelle Wallis is charged with playing Sheruff Gustafson. Although she has a fragile body, she managed to give some credibility to her character. The actress has participated in some films designed to be box office hits, such as the latest version of The Mummy, the horror film Anabelle and the latest version of King Arthur, although I prefer the characters she has played on television. Like forgetting the character of Grace in the series Peaky Blinders and her role in the series The Tudors. In those two series she was fabulous.

The rest are supporting actors, where each one plays the assigned role, they don't disagree with the story and each one brings realism to their performances. But I have to mention the actor Zahn McClarnon, because I like to see him again. He's an actor who played a memorable character in the second season of the Fargo television series. He also appeared in the successful HBO science fiction series Westworld, with another unforgettable character. He is an actor who attracts attention with his presence on the screen. In this production, he plays a small but important role for a precise moment in the story being told.

Some critics have said that his plot is predictable, they are quite right, as I said at the beginning, I did not like much the final resolution and the way the killer is discovered, especially the motivation of the killer. But they are a type of film made for the purpose of passing time, the film does not pretend to be a new Seven.

I'm a fan of these crime stories with mystery killers, so I like these films and they show me a good time. I'm not going to demand extraordinary work from them, when they don't have it as a goal. As long as I like the story, it's well filmed and has good actors, I'm satisfied.

An hour and a half to enjoy this story with serial killers and some action. It won't be a film that you remember or that impacts you much, but it's perfect to have a good time watching a proper production.

A recommendation to see on Sunday.

My Ranking: 3/5
