The film that I am going to review, is a small production and that is not accompanied by a great promotion of streaming services, but several things caught my attention: it is an Irish film, it is of the thriller genre and one of the actresses is Charlie Murphy, of whom I am a fan and I have seen many of the series and films in which she has worked.
The filming of the movie took place in Sligo, Ireland, located in the northwest of that country, it is a very touristic city because of the amount of landscapes and beauty of its nature. It is something we can enjoy in the film, those mythical landscapes full of stories and legends. I have always been attracted to the natural environments of that country, which centuries ago were inhabited by the Celts.
Those landscapes exert a magnetic attraction on me, I can't find an explanation, but I like everything related to that culture. Those forests seem to have the energy of the ancient Celts in their environment.
Young Irish filmmaker Phil Sheerin directs, in what appears to be his feature film debut. According to his IMDB listing he has written and directed several short films
The Winter Lake may not be a great story, but it is interesting enough to enjoy in a weekend. Enjoy the beautiful and enigmatic locations in which it was shot, in a story in which a family's secrets are in danger of being revealed, by a chance and horrible discovery made by the main character.

La película que voy a reseñar, es una producción pequeña y que no está acompañada de una gran promoción de los servicios de streaming, pero varias cosas captaron mi atención: es una película irlandesa, es del genero thriller y una de las actrices es Charlie Murphy, del que soy fan y he visto muchas de las series y películas en las que ha trabajado.
El rodaje del film tuvo lugar en Sligo, Irlanda, ubicado en el noroeste de ese país, es una ciudad muy turística por la cantidad de paisajes y belleza de su naturaleza. Es algo que podemos disfrutar en el film, esos míticos paisajes llenos de historias y leyendas. Siempre me ha llamado la atención los ambientes naturales de ese país, que siglos atrás eran habitados por los celtas.
Esos paisajes ejercen una atracción magnética en mí, no encuentro explicación, pero es que todo lo relacionado a esa cultura me gusta. Esos bosques parecen tener la energía de los antiguos celtas en su entorno.
El joven cineasta irlandés Phil Sheerin se encarga de la dirección, en lo que parece ser su debut en los largometrajes. Según su ficha de IMDB ha escrito y dirigido varios cortometrajes.
The Winter Lake quizás no sea una gran historia, pero es lo suficientemente interesante para disfrutar un fin de semana. Young Tom moves with his mother to the old house where his recently deceased grandfather lived alone. Tom is an introverted, quiet teenager who seems to have had anger issues. Now his mother, Elaine, wants to rebuild her life in the new town. One day, while strolling by the lake, Tom makes a horrible find. Something that was wrapped in a cloth sack. Being a strange young man, he takes it home for safekeeping. But soon his young neighbor Holly, will realize that the boy has discovered something that she and her father Ward must keep secret. At first, she will try to trick and seduce him into returning what he has discovered, but Ward will become increasingly desperate to keep the big secret hidden. Elaine and Tom's lives will be in grave danger. What has Tom found? What is Holly's father hiding? Will they be willing to do anything? Will Tom make it out safely?

Elaine and Tom's characters begin to relate as friends, she does so at first so that the boy will keep the secret of what he found in the lake and return what endangers her and her father. But after a while of footage, we notice an ambiguity in her intentions, where she seems to actually feel sympathy for Tom.
Although much of the film shows us that interaction between Tom and Holly, it is not a romantic film. Of course, we realize that Tom is physically attracted to Holly, but at the same time he is afraid, because the secret she is hiding is too terrible.
Tom is very shy, quiet, sometimes seems withdrawn, while she is an intelligent, skilled and outgoing young woman, accustomed to a hard life in the village environment. Two completely opposite characters, united by a secret that one of them does not want to come to light.
At the same time, Tom's mother will befriend Ward, but with romantic intentions. Ward will be very kind to his neighbor, but when he learns that Tom knows the horrifying secret she hides, we will see the darker side of his personality. The kind and cordial relationship with Elaine, will give a sudden and abrupt change.
The tension between those involved will increase. Tom must make a decision, expose the discovery he has made, risking Ward's reprisals against him and his mother. Or return what he found, but with the latent risk that Ward will not want to leave him alive, for having discovered the dreaded secret.
The story may sound similar to others that have been seen in the cinema, but I think it has a good development and its final part, although it is somewhat predictable, results in a film that fulfills the function of entertaining. A Thriller to have a good time and distract the mind. The film does not pretend to be a masterpiece of the genre, it is a simple but effective production.
Los personajes de Elaine y Tom comenzarán a relacionarse, como amigos, ella al principio lo hace para que el chico mantenga el secreto de lo que encontró en el lago y le devuelva eso que la pone en peligro a ella y su padre. Pero transcurrido un tiempo de metraje, notamos una ambigüedad en sus intenciones, donde parece que de verdad siente simpatía por Tom.
Aunque una gran parte de la película nos muestra esa interacción entre Tom y Holly, no es una película romántica. Por supuesto que nos percatamos que Tom se siente atraído físicamente por Holly, pero al mismo tiempo siente miedo, porque el secreto que ella oculta es demasiado terrible.
Tom es muy tímido, callado, a veces parece retraído, en cambio ella es una joven inteligente, hábil, extrovertida y acostumbrada a la vida ruda del entorno que habita. Dos personajes completamente opuestos, unidos por un secreto que uno de ellos no quiere que salga a la luz.
Paralelamente, la madre de Tom entablará amistad con Ward, pero con intenciones románticas. Ward será muy amable con su vecina, pero cuando se entera el chico conoce el horrendo secreto que oculta, veremos el lado más oscuro de su personalidad. La relación amable y cordial con Elaine, dará un brusco cambio de forma repentina.
La tensión entre los involucrados aumentará. Tom debe tomar una decisión, exponer el descubrimiento que hizo, arriesgándose a que Ward tome represalias contra el y su madre o devolver lo que encontró, pero con el riesgo aun latente de que Ward no quiera dejarlo con vida, porque descubrió el temible secreto.
La historia pude sonar parecida a otras que se han visto en el cine, pero me parece que tiene un buen desarrollo y su parte final, aunque es algo predecible, resulta en un film que cumple la función de entretener. Un Thriller para pasar un buen rato y distraer la mente. El film no pretende ser una obra maestra del género, es una producción sencilla pero efectiva.
The landscape, the forests, the lake, create an intriguing atmosphere that favors the viewing of the film. I told you at the beginning of the post that it was one of the elements that most caught my attention.
The cinematography is by Ruairi O'Brien who has a long career in UK television. Among his filmography as cinematographer, his contributions in successful series such as Line of Duty and especially his work in the fantastic series The Fall, starring Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dorman, before being famous for the movie 50 Shades of Grey. I recommend watching that series, it consists of three seasons and is excellent.
The script is by David Turpin. It is his second screenplay, in 2017 they made a movie from his first screenplay: The Lodgers. A horror story set in early 20th century Ireland. An interesting film that was screened in competition at the Sitges Festival that year. Both stories have common places and become predictable, but he seems to me a screenwriter with good ideas, I hope the next thing he writes will be more consistent.

Entre su filmografía como director de fotografía, están sus aportes en la series de éxito como Line of Duty y especialmente su trabajo en la fantástica serie The Fall, protagonizada por Gillian Anderson y Jamie Dorman, antes de ser famoso por el film 50 sombras de Gray. Recomiendo vean esa serie, consta de tres temporadas y es excelente.

The film has a rising star among its cast, I believe the actress' name is what they are using to promote the film. She is Emma Mackey, an actress well known to fans of the Netflix series Sex Education. I haven't seen a single episode of that series, so I don't know much about the actress' work.
She has a legion of fans and her fame is growing. This year we will see two important productions in which she participates. One is the French film Eiffel, which will narrate the life of the inventor of the famous Eiffel Tower. The other film is Death on the Nile, the second adventure of detective Hercule Poirot, played and directed by Kenneth Branagh. So watch out for this actress, I won't be watching the series, but these two films I will.

Winter Lake is a Thriller that delivers what it promises, to have an entertaining time with this story where a secret that seemed eternally sunken in the lake, comes to the surface, crossing the destinies of two neighboring families. Young Tom must struggle with his inner conflicts to face a real danger.
Especially recommended for lovers of this genre.
The Winter Lake es un Thriller que cumple con lo que promete, pasar un tiempo entretenido con esta historia donde un secreto que parecía hundido para siempre en el lago, sale a la superficie, cruzando los destinos de dos familias vecinas. El Joven Tom, deberá luchar con sus conflictos internos para enfrentarse a un peligro real.
Especialmente recomendada para los amantes de este género.
