Film history is filled with poorly made films that are funny of their bad quality, lousy acting or terrible plots, this category of films has its jewels and classics, even in modern times we have films like Sharknado, Birdemic showing us that this tradition ain't dead, and the best evidence of it to my eyes is The Velocipastor (2018).
Since Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), I would dare to say this genre of "good bad movies" has become petty solid in laughs, surprises, and weird storylines. Still, Velocipastor takes it to a new level with a priest turning into a dinosaur and destroying a cartel of drugs run by a NINJA clan? That plot had at least a few logical jumps in writing, but it becomes so ludicrous that if you do not laugh, something is wrong with your humor.
The plot is insane, in so many levels that you get scenes so fresh out of the oven that they didn't even add the special effects, they just left a notice saying "VFX: here" to add insult to the injury my guess, but that adds a new field of madness to this film because it makes you feel that this whole neglected filming was done on purpose.
And it is that feeling of purpose that makes this film so special, it feels that at any given time of the film Nicolas Cage is gonna pop up into existence inside the film and act as a narrator, it is just that crazy as a film to have a Nicolas Cameo, but it does not happen (sadly), and that makes it hilarious.
Because Velocipastor ruins every expectation you have from it beyond the most obvious ones, meaning that no matter what, the film finds a way to purposely dodge any possible good choice they could have made for the plot, making it so fun that I count not stop laughing at it, from the initial car explosion to the end of the film, this film keeps searching the way to make the worst possible choice.
One way or another this film made me laugh so much that now I find myself writing a piece on it, I watched it on Father's Day of all days possible. The act of looking at such a bad "good" film with my daughter on my day and seeing her mesmerized by the colors and the shades of the film made it worth it, by the way, the worse part about this film is that the director knew how to do a good frame, and kept himself from doing so, that is easy to notice if you look closely to the transitions.
We are talking about someone that incidentally makes this line of films and that makes it an example of its genre, this movie directing is nonsense, the editing makes so many mistakes that transitions feel sluggish, and the production is a disaster no matter where you look at it, and the writing feels like a constant flow of nonsensical and unrelated stuff, and guess who is behind all of those, yeah, the same guy, Brendan Steere and that makes it awesome. This whole film is the vision of that guy turning this movie into a bad comedy film that makes you wonder WHAT Am I looking at?
Now set that aside, the comedy of the film is incredible from the wood human parts to the character of Carol who for some reason knows the law, fighting ninjas like a pro and win, and do not forget the medical knowledge, as she is supposed to be on college in that said career (also law), but ninja fighting? I didn't see that one on college learning material. The priest somehow learns also to fight at that level and that also makes no sense, just as much as the main villain of the first arc of the story going to church and confessing murder to the priest, but I guess those are just plot jokes made for us, some meta-jokes.
And those meta-jokes are what makes this film so cool, there is nonsense hidden in the "logical" parts of the film, and there is also craziness hidden in the same parts this film is not one you would be able to predict, ever, in a lifetime, unless you are a dragon warrior (Velociraptor) yourself.
Now the whole Velociraptor thing is weird, basically is either terrible effects or a terrible trip on medicines, our main character keeps pushing his power forward and evolving it step by step making it possible to transform on command, and even in some areas of his body instead of full scale.
Our main priest character (Doug Jones) manages by the end of the film to control his power to the extreme and just turn his hands into the reapers of death while preserving his mind and combat efficiency, something quite dangerous in the film's lore, but still total comedy for us, because it makes no sense, just like the rest of the film.
With time, the film finds itself with a lot of meta jokes that you would not expect from it, from the priest studying Dinosaurs to Carol hunting for criminals, the film constantly does these kinds of outside-the-film jokes and odd references, but these are consistent, and that is a big deal, this film keeps pulling plot twists every few minutes, making it to the point of nonsense, but the meta-jokes and the jokes are consistent with each other. Something we should appreciate, at least there is something that makes sense in the film.
All films in this category of bad "good" films have their magic, but I take Velocipastor as the one that made me laugh like nothing else made in that year, now if you allow me to ask, would you like to dedicate some time to The Velocipastor? Allow it to bring laughs to your life, that is my advice.

La historia del cine está llena de películas mal hechas que hacen gracia con su mala calidad, pésimas actuaciones o terribles tramas, esta categoría de películas tiene sus joyas y clásicos, incluso en tiempos modernos tenemos películas como Sharknado o Birdemic que nos demuestran que esta tradición no está muerta, y la mejor prueba de ello a mis ojos es El Velocipastor (2018).
Desde Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), me atrevería a decir que este género de "buenas películas malas" se ha vuelto mezquinamente sólido en risas, sorpresas y argumentos extraños. Aun así, Velocipastor lo lleva a un nuevo nivel con un sacerdote que se convierte en dinosaurio y destruye un cártel de la droga dirigido por un clan de ¿NINJAS? Esa trama tenía al menos algunos saltos lógicos en la escritura, pero se vuelve tan ridícula que si no te ríes, algo anda mal en tu humor.
La trama es demencial, en tantos niveles que te encuentras con escenas recién salidas del horno que ni siquiera añadieron los efectos especiales, simplemente dejaron un aviso que decía "VFX: aquí" para añadir insulto a la ya precaria situación en mi opinión, pero eso añade un nuevo campo de locura a esta película porque te hace sentir que todo este descuidado rodaje fue hecho a propósito.
Y es esa sensación de propósito la que hace que esta película sea tan especial, da la sensación de que en cualquier momento de la película Nicolas Cage va a aparecer dentro de la película y actuar como narrador, es así de loco como filme, como para tener un Cameo de Nicolas, pero no sucede (tristemente), y eso lo hace hilarante.
Porque Velocipastor arruina toda expectativa que tengas de ella más allá de las más obvias, es decir, que no importa lo que pase, la película encuentra la manera de esquivar a propósito cualquier posible buena elección que pudieran haber hecho para la trama, haciéndola tan divertida que no cuento para reírme de ella, desde la explosión inicial del coche hasta el final de la película, esta película sigue buscando la manera de hacer la peor elección posible.
De una forma u otra esta película me hizo reír tanto que ahora me encuentro escribiendo un artículo sobre ella, la vi precisamente el día del padre. El hecho de ver una película tan mala y "buena" con mi hija en mi día y verla hipnotizada por los colores y los matices de la película hizo que mereciera la pena, por cierto, lo peor de esta película es que el director supo hacer un buen encuadre, y se abstuvo de hacerlo, eso es fácil de notar si te fijas bien en las transiciones.
Estamos hablando de alguien que hace este tipo de películas y eso la convierte en un ejemplo de su género, la dirección de esta película es un despropósito, el montaje comete tantos errores que las transiciones se sienten lentas, y la producción es un desastre se mire por donde se mire, y el guion parece un flujo constante de cosas sin sentido y sin relación, y adivinen quién está detrás de todo eso, sí, el mismo tipo, Brendan Steere y eso lo hace increíble. Toda la película es la visión de ese tipo convirtiendo esta película en una mala comedia que te hace preguntarte ¿QUÉ estoy viendo?
Ahora bien, dejando eso de lado, la comedia de la película es increíble desde las partes humanas de madera hasta el personaje de Carol que por alguna razón sabe de leyes, lucha contra ninjas como una profesional y gana, y no se olvida de los conocimientos de medicina, ya que se supone que está en la universidad en dicha carrera (también de leyes), pero ¿Lucha contra ninjas? Esa no la vi en el material de aprendizaje de la universidad. El cura de alguna manera aprende también a luchar a ese nivel y eso tampoco tiene sentido, tanto como que el villano principal del primer arco argumental vaya a la iglesia y confiese el asesinato al cura, pero supongo que eso son chistes argumentales hechos para nosotros, unos meta chistes.
Y esos meta chistes son los que hacen que esta película sea tan genial, hay tonterías escondidas en las partes "lógicas" de la película, y también hay locuras escondidas en las mismas partes, esta película no es una que podrías predecir, nunca en la vida, a menos que seas un guerrero dragón (Velociraptor) tú mismo.
Ahora todo el asunto del Velociraptor es raro, básicamente es o efectos terribles o un terrible viaje en medicinas, nuestro personaje principal sigue empujando su poder hacia adelante y evolucionándolo paso a paso haciendo posible que se transforme a la orden, e incluso en algunas áreas de su cuerpo en lugar de a escala completa.
Nuestro personaje, el sacerdote (Doug Jones) consigue al final de la película controlar su poder hasta el extremo y simplemente convertir sus manos en las parcas de la muerte mientras conserva su mente y su eficacia en el combate, algo bastante peligroso en el lore de la película, pero que no deja de ser una comedia total para nosotros, porque no tiene sentido, al igual que el resto de la película.
Con el tiempo, la película se encuentra con un montón de meta chistes que no te esperarías de ella, desde el cura estudiando a los Dinosaurios hasta ver a Carol cazando criminales, la película constantemente hace este tipo de chistes fuera de la película y referencias raras, pero estas son consistentes, y eso es algo importante, esta película sigue tirando de giros argumentales cada pocos minutos, haciéndolo hasta el punto de no tener sentido, pero los meta chistes y las bromas son consistentes entre sí. Algo que debemos agradecer, al menos hay algo que tiene sentido en la película.
Todas las películas en esta categoría de malas "buenas" tienen su magia, pero yo tomo a Velocipastor como la que me hizo reír como ninguna otra hecha en ese año, ahora si me permiten preguntar ¿Quieren dedicarle un tiempo a El Velocipastor? Permita que traiga risas a su vida, ese es mi consejo.
