What makes a friendship? Is it money, status, or culture? Is the connection between human beings? Maybe all of those, maybe none of them, I consider friendship to be a connection born out of human growth, a tangible connection born out of common factors or opportunity, and there has never been a movie that showed us some light into the mystery of friendship like the Intouchables did, in my eyes this film is a masterpiece on showing us a vibrant friendship that most of us ever experience once or twice in a lifetime, and their constant changes and growth both in spiritual as in a physical sense as they become friends like few.
Friendship is hard to pin into a single easy concept, but with the opening lines I would like to expand my concept of friendship and open it for you, my readers, most friendships are unique and there are no two similar relationships between human beings, and no matter what social strata, context or limits, most people have a high potential of growth.
A good friend is the one that leads you to growth, not because they profit from it, but because you also do it for them, a great friendship is the one that goes both ways and grants both the capacity to grow into a better version of themselves, and Intouchables (2011) takes that to the extreme, with perfect timing and incredible acting, they properly sell us the idea of Philippe and Abdel (Driss) being both human beings that grew beyond boundaries with their friendship, effectively saving both of their lives and changing their fates, as it pushed a man out of the crime life, and another man into open itself into the second shot in life, managing to do both of them justice and setting their lives straight.
Why did I say Sell? Because at the end of the day this film is just a reenactment of real events, both of the actors tried to imitate something bigger than them, bigger than life itself, they imitated pure friendship, and by doing so, they also became friends.
Is this friendship the one that we can see and feel with ease in every part of the film, not the original one, but just a shadow of it, a reenactment, and this is enough to become film history because few people would ever be able to imitate such a life, few would be able to portray said friendship, the looks, the gestures, each of them feels genuine and that in itself is something that only happens once in a lifetime of acting, because that level of chemistry between actors is hardly visible in modern days.
Shadows of life are what this film is mostly about, they show us the shadow of what is left of Philippe's life, of Abdel's (Driss in the film) lack of opportunity and systemic indolence of poverty and lack of education, all of this while commenting none into it, avoiding becoming morally ambiguous and just retaining its original purpose, to transmit the tale of a friendship.
But these elements are not left neglected in the plot, they are eventually dealt with and reflected upon the viewer, we not only see how these limits are real for Abdel (Driss), we tangibly see them with ease during this story, because it is represented by Driss family, social context and economical limits.
Driss is part of the low working class, and their chances in modern France are... Slim, to say the least, when we meet him as the character we see a deeply oppressed African European man, in an obscure and rough reality that binds him to social assistance to win an extra fund to divert to his aunt and many cousins to help them survive; if we compare that to Philippe, we can easily see that they should not be nearly as compatible as they are, even for a couple of characters in a film, there is no common point among each other, yet they indeed create a great bond, and no matter how many class struggles there are, the character of Driss (Abdel in real life) makes his best to fit into the world and bring Philippe back into it as well.
There is an element of imagination that is hard to miss in this film, the changes in both characters. Philippe in real life is a successful businessman and owner of a champagne company, and this is shown in the film by a constant supply of alcohol to both of them and how easy it is for them to "have a drink" wherever they go and no matter the time, morning, night, it makes no difference for them. In the film, he is shaped more like an aristocratic millionaire and there are no further explanations of how big is his cash fund or why does all his family waits for his death so much to go every year to his birthday party, all of this makes sense if you research his life, as they all want his company assets, but makes no sense in the film as a stand-alone.
In the meanwhile, Abdel's re-imagining of Driss is also as strong as Philippe, in the books and in real life, he was as much of a hard worker as he was an ex-criminal, Driss's records in the film dint have that much influence on Philippe, but in real life, they mattered a lot. Philippe needed someone strong that could protect his life of "accidents", and that is one of the main reasons Abdel was even on the possible candidate's list. Driss on the other way is more of a street hustle, someone with skills but not a former criminal like Abdel, more of a Casanova than anything else, he is not as much of a violent man as his real-life counterpart, making the scene where Philippe lawyer asks him to fire him feel somehow "misplaced" in the film, as there is no "reason" for Driss to be fired beyond a racial one, while in the real life, the other employees of Philippe were somehow scared of Abdel due to his criminal records.
This all adds up to the difference between art and life, they were friends indeed, in real life or movie, that friendship is as real as it gets, and if not for Driss (Abdel), Philippe would have never been able to continue with his life and open himself to love, family and friendship once again, he would have been nothing but a shadow sitting on a wheelchair, just waiting for the ripper.
Reflecting on ourselves, this film had it as one of the central points of its story, intended to make us feel the depth of friendship, remember the good times we spend with our friends at various times in life, making us tune in with the couple of friends we meet throughout the film, and that in itself is an incredible job by the actors.
Is this acting that makes this film work, if it was made in another time or by other actors with a different social context, it would be a total disaster, and some films serve as evidence of it, there as The Upside (2019), Oopiri: A Celebration of Life (2016) and Inseparables (2016), all of this films had their positive points, but none of them achieved what Intouchables (2011) did, they just tried to imitate this masterpiece and failed to do so, yet still shared the story of this friendship that should be remembered, a couple of friends that defeated all common notion of friendship and went so far as becoming part of life itself.

¿Qué hace una amistad? ¿Es el dinero, el estatus o la cultura? ¿Es la conexión entre seres humanos? Tal vez todo eso, tal vez ninguno, yo considero que la amistad es una conexión que nace del crecimiento humano, una conexión tangible que nace de factores comunes u oportunidades, y nunca ha habido una película que nos muestre algo de luz en el misterio de la amistad como lo hizo Los Intocables, a mis ojos esta película es una obra maestra al mostrarnos una amistad vibrante que la mayoría de nosotros experimentamos una o dos veces en la vida, y sus constantes cambios y crecimiento tanto en lo espiritual como en lo físico al convertirse en amigos como pocos.
La amistad es difícil de concretar en un solo concepto fácil, pero con las primeras líneas me gustaría ampliar mi concepto de amistad y abrirlo para ustedes, mis lectores, la mayoría de las amistades son únicas y no hay dos relaciones similares entre los seres humanos, y no importa el estrato social, el contexto o los límites, la mayoría de las personas tienen un alto potencial de crecimiento.
Un buen amigo es el que te lleva a crecer, no porque ellos se beneficien de ello, sino porque tú también lo haces por ellos, una gran amistad es la que va en ambos sentidos y otorga a ambos la capacidad de crecer hacia una mejor versión de sí mismos, e Intouchables (2011) lleva eso al extremo, con un momento perfecto y una actuación increíble, nos venden adecuadamente la idea de que Philippe y Abdel (Driss) son dos seres humanos que crecieron más allá de los límites con su amistad, salvando efectivamente la vida de ambos y cambiando sus destinos, ya que empujó a un hombre a salir de la vida criminal, y a otro a abrirse a la segunda oportunidad en la vida, logrando hacer justicia a ambos y enderezando sus vidas.
¿Por qué he dicho vender? Porque al fin y al cabo esta película no es más que una recreación de hechos reales, ambos actores trataron de imitar algo más grande que ellos, más grande que la vida misma, imitaron la amistad pura, y al hacerlo, también se convirtieron en amigos.
Es esta amistad la que podemos ver y sentir con facilidad en cada parte de la película, no la original, sino sólo una sombra de ella, una recreación, y esto es suficiente para convertirse en historia del cine porque pocas personas serían capaces de imitar una vida así, pocas serían capaces de retratar dicha amistad, las miradas, los gestos, cada uno de ellos se siente genuino y eso en sí mismo es algo que sólo sucede una vez en la vida de la actuación, porque ese nivel de química entre los actores es difícilmente visible en los días modernos.
Las sombras de la vida son lo que más se trata en esta película, nos muestran la sombra de lo que queda de la vida de Philippe, de la falta de oportunidades de Abdel (Driss en la película) y de la indolencia sistémica de la pobreza y la falta de educación, todo ello sin comentar nada al respecto, evitando convertirse en un filme moralmente ambiguo y sólo conservando su propósito original, transmitir la historia de una amistad.
Pero estos elementos no se dejan de lado en la trama, al final se tratan y se reflejan en el espectador, no sólo vemos como estos límites son reales para Abdel (Driss), sino que los vemos tangiblemente con facilidad durante esta historia, porque está representada por la familia de Driss, el contexto social y los límites económicos que lo rodean.
Driss forma parte de la clase obrera baja, y sus posibilidades en la Francia moderna son, escasas, por decirlo de alguna manera, cuando lo conocemos como personaje vemos a un hombre afroeuropeo profundamente oprimido, en una realidad oscura y áspera que lo obliga a recurrir a la asistencia social para ganar un fondo extra que desvía a su tía y a sus numerosos primos para ayudarlos a sobrevivir; si lo comparamos con Philippe, podemos ver fácilmente que no deberían ser tan compatibles como lo son, incluso para una pareja de personajes en una película, no hay ningún punto en común entre ellos, y sin embargo, crean un gran vínculo, y por muchas luchas de clases que haya, el personaje de Driss (Abdel en la vida real) hace todo lo posible para encajar en el mundo y traer a Philippe de regreso también.
Hay un elemento de imaginación que es difícil de pasar por alto en esta película, los cambios en ambos personajes. Philippe en la vida real es un exitoso hombre de negocios y propietario de una empresa de champán, y esto se muestra en la película por un suministro constante de alcohol a ambos y lo fácil que es para ellos "tomar una copa" donde quiera que vayan y no importa la hora, mañana, noche, no hay ninguna diferencia para ellos. En la película, se perfila más como un millonario aristocrático y no hay más explicaciones de lo grande que es su fondo de dinero o por qué toda su familia espera tanto su muerte para ir cada año a su fiesta de cumpleaños, todo esto tiene sentido si se investiga su vida, ya que todos quieren sus bienes de la empresa, pero no tiene sentido en la película como algo aislado.
Mientras tanto, la reimaginación de Abdel en Driss también es fuerte, tanto como la de Philippe, en los libros y en la vida real era tan trabajador como ex-criminal, los registros criminales de Driss en la película no tienen tanta influencia en Philippe, pero en la vida real, importaban mucho. Philippe necesitaba alguien fuerte que pudiera proteger su vida de "accidentes", y esa es una de las principales razones por las que Abdel estaba incluso en la lista de posibles candidatos. Driss, por el contrario, es más una rata callejera, alguien con habilidades pero no un antiguo delincuente como Abdel, diria que es más un casanova que otra cosa, no es un hombre tan violento como su homólogo en la vida real, lo que hace que la escena en la que el abogado de Philippe le pide que lo despida se sienta "fuera de lugar" en la película, ya que no hay ninguna "razón" para que Driss sea despedido más allá de la racial, mientras que en la vida real, los otros empleados de Philippe tenían en algun grado miedo de Abdel debido a sus antecedentes penales.
Todo esto se suma a la diferencia entre el arte y la vida, eran amigos de verdad, en la vida real o en la película, esa amistad es lo más real que puede haber, y si no fuera por Driss (Abdel), Philippe nunca habría podido continuar con su vida y abrirse al amor, a la familia y a la amistad una vez más, no habría sido más que una sombra sentada en una silla de ruedas, esperando a la parca.
Reflexionar sobre nosotros mismos, esta película lo tenia como uno de los puntos centrales de su historia, pretendía hacernos sentir la profundidad de la amistad, recordar los buenos momentos que pasamos con nuestros amigos en varios momentos de la vida, haciéndonos sintonizar con la pareja de amigos que vamos conociendo a través de la película, y eso en sí mismo si es un trabajo increíble por parte de los actores.
Es esta actuación la que hace que esta película funcione, si estuviera hecha en otra época o por otros actores con un contexto social diferente, sería un desastre total, y algunas películas sirven como prueba de ello, tales como The Upside (2019), Oopiri: Una Celebración de la Vida (2016) e Inseparables (2016), todas estas películas tuvieron sus puntos positivos, pero ninguna logró lo que Intouchables (2011), sólo trataron de imitar esta obra maestra y no lo lograron, sin embargo compartieron la historia de esta amistad que debe ser recordada, un par de amigos que vencieron toda noción común de amistad y llegaron a ser parte de la vida misma.
