Eternal youth, some films aim to sell this idea and there is The Lost Boys (1987), the first teenage vampire film, that one time when Kiefer Sutherland was a "sexy" vampire, a film where we had to focus on youth as sensuality, and dark comedy as the escape from said sexual impulse, this dark glam comedy genre is what changed this film and made it vampire history, it built its influential touch in a bunch of films that we had in the current day, but it has its dark mark that make it still relevant.
This one film was so vague, so good and so weird that it has its incredible soundtrack and set of influences on films, from the moment when "People Are Strange" from The Doors is on play in the film, we ought to immerse ourselves in a cult film that has so many vampires, yet it has made itself impossible to be remade, rebooted or restarted, in modern Hollywood, this makes it a film that is one of a kind and is worth every possible watch, let me tell you why.
There are films where their context made them impossible in any other given time, for example, Forrest Gump would be impossible to be published in modern-day political correctness, this happens with The Lost Boys in more than one way. Modern culture would not have it in many ways, because modern-day vampires are always sexy, but back when this film was published, the sexiest vampire would be 50 years old, and it would be closer to your gram parent in looks than to a 20-something's young men.
This film subverted that image of vampires with its young ones, eternal party boys that also pushed it to the horror genre by having slaughter fests while giving them half transformations, at its time this was a major risk and cost the director about half of its allege budget, this helped a lot to the film aesthetic, as he had to improve with less, making it charming in many ways, especially the vampire eyes and claws, something that was unique at its time and is still a vampire element that is hard to see in current day cinema.
So why are they unable to reboot it? Because in the modern day this film would be more of a Twilight film with a comedy twist than the horror glam comedy it was, making it is core and essence as a film, into a meaningless paste of potential without anything to add, as most vampire film genre has drained upon this film and made its conflicts and influences meaningless, they have copied it all from it.
For just mentioning, common tropes this film created are numerous, but the most famous ones are Half vampires that do not want to become vampires, young vampires that look like rock stars, dark jokes about vampires and how being an immortal sucks, and don't forget your classic non-nuclear family with a divorcee single mom as the head of the family, if any of these tropes sound good to you, you have seen how this film made its influence in the vampire genre or modern dark horror comedy, they use at least one of these, especially the non "standard" family model is real common on the dark comedy cinema.
But why is it so worth watching? Its uniqueness, the fact that Hollywood has tried to reboot it several times since its original run, offered hundreds of millions to several directors and nothing has been made of it shows how difficult and unique this film is. From its aesthetics of Michael and his reluctance to kill his small brother and turn into a full vampire as a half-breed, to its comedy touch represented by the Frog brothers that are as male bravado as you can get from kids born out of Rambo and Chuck Norris, the fact that one of these kids make the main villain cry while killing one of his lost boys (vampires) was made into cinema history because it showed a sentimental value on a human-like villain and that was turned into a trope on vampire films.
This movie is shown to be full of unique elements that could not be replicated in modern-day cinema and that is what keeps it fresh, you can see it and notice how it has influenced modern-day vampire tropes, but at the same time when you can see Buffy and Twilight as they drained the most out of this film, you can also see how it still honors the works of Anne Rice and many other gothic vampire references from old age, even the way The Lost Boys sleeps as a group of bats inside a cave is a reference to Dracula from Bram Stoker.
Those references are what make this film so influential because it is built upon giants and has great bases, these young vampires are set into a very good bridge, and this goes beyond the way to build up a universe that feels surreal yet possible, so it could be built upon it. Yeah, this was ironically wasted as this film originally was set to have sequels but as the budget of the original film made this to a close and ruined the chances of making sequels, as ironic as this could be because this saved this film from becoming a Hollywood generic vampire film and made it into a cult classic.
As these bridges are built and burn in this film, we see it as a modern classic, a cult film that is influential to the bone yet just a shadow of its former genre, we see no old-age vampire but a bunch of party boys, no edge on the vampire plots on morality and the immoral of the ideal of immortality and richest (as old vampires are always rich in vampire films if you look closely), but a fun movie filled with sexy vampires that fly and kill as they like until they mess with the wrong family.
We see a movie that influences by jokes like "death by stereo" and references to the culture of its time to the point there are still memes around it, especially by the live presentation of a Sax musician (Tim Cappello) that ended up becoming a living legend and a "snapshot" of its time and culture by itself, this film made more than one legend, it was not only Sutherland role, but the whole cast was build upon it with greatness, and this film did it all by its plain creativity and hard work.
With time this film is something that is evenly more worth watching, as the last reboot try-out was made this last year and is still in progress, this one was sold as a woman version of it called The Lost Girls to be more precise. One way or another Hollywood can't avoid itself from touching the cult movies, so we will eventually see it happen, let's hope they nail the coffin as good as with the original and see another king or queen of the Lost Boys(or girls) sitting on the throne, if he or she got half the style Kiefer Sutherland did, it will be worth the watch as well. Because this king has made his past and is now an old man, but in this film, it still holds its charm.
If any of these are not reason enough to go and watch The Lost Boys, I will gladly add another one: You will have a blast just by hunting the references in films you already saw that are mentioned in this one, just remembering what modern vampire films reference it is hard enough for any movie fan out there, even Robert Rodriguez and Tarantino From Dusk Till Dawn have references from this film, it was that influential, and if you let me recommend it to you, it is worth the watch.

La eterna juventud, algunas películas pretenden vender esta idea y luego está The Lost Boys (1987), la primera película de vampiros adolescentes, esa época en la que Kiefer Sutherland hacía de vampiro "sexy", una película en la que había que enfocar la juventud como sensualidad, y la comedia oscura como la huida de dicho impulso sexual cual balance, este género de comedia oscura y glamur es el que cambió esta película y la convirtió en historia de los vampiros en el cinema, construyó con su toque influyente un montón de películas que tenemos en la actualidad, pero tiene su marca oscura que la hace seguir siendo relevante como filme.
Esta película fue tan flexible, tan buena y tan extraña que tiene una increíble banda sonora y conjunto de influencias en otras películas, desde el momento en que "People Are Strange" de The Doors está sonando en el filme, debemos sumergirnos en una película de culto que tiene vampiros y sin embargo, se ha hecho imposible de ser rehecha, reiniciada o reseteada para el Hollywood moderno, esto hace que sea una película unica en su especie y valedera del tiempo dedicado a verla, déjame decirte el porqué.
Hay películas en las que su contexto las hace imposibles en cualquier otra época, por ejemplo, Forrest Gump sería imposible de publicar en la epoca actual, esto sucede con The Lost Boys en más de un sentido. La cultura moderna no lo permitiría en muchos aspectos, porque los vampiros de hoy en día siempre son sexys, pero en la época en que se publicó esta película, el vampiro más sexy tendría 50 años, y estaría más cerca de tu abuelo en apariencia que de un veinteañero.
Esta película subvirtió esa imagen de los vampiros con sus jóvenes y eternos fiesteros que además la empujaron al género de terror al tener festines de matanzas mientras les daban medias transformaciones a monstruos, en su momento esto fue un gran riesgo y le costó al director cerca de la mitad de su presupuesto alegado, ironicamente esto ayudó mucho a la estética de la película, ya que tuvo que mejorar con menos, haciéndola encantadora en muchos aspectos, sobre todo los ojos y las garras de los vampiros, algo que fue único en su época y sigue siendo un elemento vampírico difícil de ver en el cine actual.
Entonces ¿Por qué son incapaces de reiniciarla? Porque en la actualidad esta película sería más una película de Crepúsculo con un toque de comedia que la comedia de terror glamurosa que era, convirtiendo su núcleo y esencia como película, en una pasta sin sentido con potencial pero sin nada que añadir, ya que la mayoría del género cinematográfico de vampiros ha drenado de esta película y ha hecho que sus conflictos e influencias no tengan sentido, es decir, lo han copiado todo de ella.
Por sólo mencionar, los cliches comunes que esta película creó son numerosos, pero los más famosos son los medios vampiros que no quieren convertirse en vampiros, jóvenes vampiros que parecen estrellas de rock, chistes oscuros sobre vampiros y cómo ser un inmortal apesta, y no se olvide de su clásica familia no nuclear con una madre soltera divorciada como cabeza de familia, si alguno de estos cliches te suena, has visto como esta película hizo su influencia en el género vampírico y en la comedia de terror oscura moderna, ambas utilizan al menos uno de estos, especialmente el modelo de familia no "estándar", este es realmente común en el cine de comedia oscura.
Pero, ¿Por qué merece la pena verla? Por su singularidad, el hecho de que Hollywood haya intentado reiniciarla varias veces desde su estreno, que haya ofrecido cientos de millones a varios directores y que no se haya hecho nada con ello demuestra lo difícil y única que es esta película. Desde su estética, con Michael y su reticencia a matar a su hermano pequeño y convertirse en un vampiro completo, hasta su toque de comedia representado por los hermanos Frog que son la pura bravuconería masculina obtenible de los niños nacidos en la epoca de Rambo y Chuck Norris, el hecho de que uno de estos niños haga llorar al villano principal mientras mata a uno de sus niños perdidos (vampiros) pasó a la historia del cine por mostrar un valor sentimental en un villano de aspecto humano y que se convirtió en un cliche en las películas de vampiros.
Esta película se muestra llena de elementos únicos que no podrían ser replicados en el cine actual y eso es lo que la mantiene fresca, se puede ver y notar como ha influido en los cliches de vampiros de hoy en día, pero al mismo tiempo cuando se puede ver a Buffy y Crepúsculo, se ve como le drenaron lo mejor a esta película. También puedes ver como sigue honrando las obras de Anne Rice y muchas otras referencias góticas de vampiros de antaño, incluso la forma en que The Lost Boys duermen como un grupo de murciélagos dentro de una cueva es una referencia a Drácula de Bram Stoker.
Esas referencias son las que hacen que esta película sea tan influyente porque está construida sobre gigantes y tiene grandes bases, estos jóvenes vampiros están puestos en un puente muy bueno, y esto va más allá de la forma de construir un universo que se siente surrealista pero posible, por lo que se podría construir sobre él. Sí, esto fue irónicamente desperdiciado ya que esta película originalmente iba a tener secuelas pero como el presupuesto de la película original hizo que esa oportunidad se cerrara y arruinara las posibilidades de hacer secuelas, tan irónico como esto podría ser, pues esto salvó a esta película de convertirse en una película de vampiros genérica de Hollywood y la convirtió en un clásico de culto en su genero de horror-comedia.
Como estos puentes se construyen y se queman en esta película, la vemos como un clásico moderno, una película de culto que es influyente hasta el hueso pero sólo una sombra de su antiguo género, no vemos ningún vampiro de la tercera edad sino un grupo de chicos de la fiesta, ninguna mencion en la trama sobre la moralidad y lo inmoral del ideal de la inmortalidad y los más ricos (ya que los vampiros de la tercera edad siempre son ricos en las películas de vampiros si te fijas bien) sobre sus pobres victimas, sino una película divertida llena de vampiros sexys que vuelan y matan como quieren hasta que se meten con la familia equivocada.
Vemos una película que influye por chistes como "muerte por estéreo" y referencias a la cultura de su época hasta el punto de que todavía hay memes a su alrededor, sobre todo por la presentación en vivo de un músico de Saxofón (Tim Cappello) que terminó convirtiéndose en una leyenda viviente y una foto "instantánea" de su tiempo y cultura en su propio derecho, esta película hizo más de una leyenda, no fue sólo el papel de Sutherland, sino que todo el elenco se construyó sobre ella con grandeza, y esta película lo hizo todo con su llana creatividad y trabajo.
Con el tiempo esta película es algo que vale aún más la pena ver, ya que el último intento de reboot se hizo este año pasado y aún está en proceso, este se vendió como una versión femenina de la misma llamada Las Chicas Perdidas para ser más precisos. De una manera u otra Hollywood no puede evitar tocar las películas de culto, así que eventualmente veremos que sucede, esperemos que claven el ataúd tan bien como con la original y veamos a otro rey o reina de los Niños(o niñas) Perdidos sentado en el trono, si tiene la mitad del estilo que tuvo Kiefer Sutherland, también valdrá la pena verla. Porque este rey ha hecho su pasado y ya es un anciano, pero en esta película sigue manteniendo su encanto.
Si alguna de estas no es razón suficiente para ir a ver The Lost Boys, con gusto añadiré otra: Te lo pasarás en grande sólo con cazar las referencias de películas que ya viste y que se mencionan en ésta, sólo recordar a qué películas modernas de vampiros se hace referencia a este filme y es bastante difícil para cualquier cinéfilo por ahí verlo, hasta Robert Rodríguez y Tarantino From Dusk Till Dawn tienen referencias a esta película, fue así de influyente, y si me dejas recomendarla, vale la pena verla.
