Acabo de ver la nueva película de Mortal Kombat con mi novio, Edgardo quien, se puede decir, es fan de esta franquicia. Estuvimos conversando y queríamos dejar nuestras impresiones sobre el nuevo film de Warner. Esta película fue dirigida por Simon McQuoid con el guión de Greg Russo y Dave Callaham y una historia de Oren Uziel y Russo.
Welcome to my blog! I just saw the new Mortal Kombat movie with my boyfriend, Edgardo who, we can say, is a fan of this franchise. We were talking and wanted to leave our impressions about the new Warner film. This movie was directed by Simon McQuoid with a script by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham and a story by Oren Uziel and Russo.

Mortal Kombat es una franquicia de videojuegos de lucha (bastante sangrienta y violenta) creada por Ed Boon y John Tobias en 1992, comenzando su distribución en las máquinas de arcade o las “maquinitas” como le decimos nosotros y más adelante fueron lanzados a las consolas. Hoy en día tienen 11 juegos principales y existen infinidades de cómics, historias animadas, minijuegos y ahora 4 películas adaptadas de los personajes y la trama inicial donde las primeras 3 son terribles. Ya se darán cuenta de que es muy popular. Sus personajes son icónicos con historia, una vida, aspiraciones y familia.
Mortal Kombat is a fighting video game franchise (quite bloody and violent) created by Ed Boon and John Tobias in 1992, starting its distribution in the arcade machines or the "maquinitas" as we call them and later were released on consoles. Today they have 11 main games and there are an infinite number of comics, animated stories, mini-games and now 4 movies adapted from the characters and the initial plot where the first 3 are terrible. Como ya mencioné anteriormente, es un juego de pelea donde las habilidades especiales y el manejo de los personajes es fundamental y así como cualquier juego tiene una historia y una trama que los lleva al momento y lugar donde se tienen que enfrentar. El contexto en el que esta película del 2021 se centra es el del primer juego donde relata que existe el Mortal Kombat, un torneo de artes marciales creado por los dioses antiguos en el cual un mundo reta a otro con el fin de tener el derecho de conquistarlo después de ganar 10 torneos.Y el juego se desarrolla donde la tierra (Earthrealm) está amenazada porque ya tiene 9 derrotas en contra del Outworld, un mundo que se mantiene a base de la conquista y la violencia, entonces nuestros campeones deben vencer si o si para que la tierra tenga más oportunidades de seguir siendo libre.
As I mentioned before, it is a fighting game where special abilities and character management is fundamental and just like any game it has a story and a plot that takes them to the time and place where they have to face each other. The context in which this 2021 movie is centered is that of the first game where it relates that there is the Mortal Kombat, a martial arts tournament created by the elder gods in which a world challenges another in order to have the right to conquer it after winning 10 tournaments. And the game takes place where the earth (Earthrealm) is threatened because it already has 9 defeats against the Outworld, a world that is maintained based on conquest and violence, so our champions must win no matter what so that the earth has more chances to remain free.
Entre mi novio y nuestro grupo de amigos nos encanta los juegos de Mortal Kombat tenemos personajes favoritos, hacemos torneos por diversión y algunos se conocen más la historia que otros de los personajes o la trama del juego. A mi me parece interesante ver que el juego es como una película de acción y fantasía y siempre aprovecho que Ed es fan del lore para preguntarle todo.
Between my boyfriend and our group of friends we love Mortal Kombat games, we have favorite characters, we do tournaments for fun and some of us know more about the story of the characters or the plot of the game than others. I find it interesting to see that the game is like an action fantasy movie and I always take advantage of Ed is a lore fan to ask him everything.

¿Cuáles eran las expectativas de la película? / What were the expectations of the movie?
De Mortal Kombat lo que esperas es ver mucha sangre, sesos, muertes exageradas o fatalities, frases del juego, ver los movimientos icónicos de los personajes y ver luchar a tu personaje favorito. Además de todo esto, esperaba que la película tuviera buenas coreografías de pelea, un buen soundtrack con sonido envolvente y lleno de power.
From Mortal Kombat what you expect is to see a lot of blood, brains, exaggerated deaths or fatalities, phrases from the game, see the iconic moves of the characters and see your favorite character fight. Besides all this, I expected the movie to have good fight choreography, a good soundtrack with surround sound and full of power.
Review de la Película / Movie Review
Lo primero que debo decir es que la película cumplió claramente con nuestras expectativas principales y eso me hace feliz. Las peleas, las habilidades especiales visualmente son tal cual el juego y fue increíble. La música es súper épica, que si le dieron play al primer link se darán cuenta, es mucho más de lo que esperaba porque tiene de todo: una composición épica y orquestal, coro, gran percusión, sonidos sintetizados. Y en particular, mi personaje favorito Sonya Blade no hizo el ridículo en las peleas, demostró ser la gran badass que es.
The first thing I must say is that the movie clearly met our main expectations and that makes me happy. The fights, the special abilities visually are just like the game and it was amazing. The music is super epic, which if you played the first link you will notice, it is much more than I expected because it has everything: an epic and orchestral composition, choir, great percussion, synthesized sounds. And in particular, my favorite character Sonya Blade didn't make a fool of herself in the fights, she proved to be the great badass she is.
La película comienza excelente con la historia de siempre de Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpio), quien es el personaje favorito de Ed y es interpretado por un gran actor y artista marcial japonés Hiroyuki Sanada y su pelea con Sub-Zero, a quien le dio vida Joe Taslim. La muerte de su familia (esposa e hijo) y la salvación de la hija bebé que nadie supo de donde vino, osea no es cannon en ningún lado pero parece ser importante para que esta película tenga sentido. Estos primeros minutos de la película fueron increíbles, con un paisaje espectacular, unas coreografías y efectos especiales excelentes. The movie starts off excellent with the usual story of Hanzo Hasashi (Scorpio), who is Ed's favorite character and is played by a great Japanese actor and martial artist Hiroyuki Sanada and his fight with Sub-Zero, brought to life by Joe Taslim. The death of his family (wife and son) and the saving of the baby daughter that no one knew where she came from, I mean it's not cannon anywhere but it seems to be important for this movie to make sense. These first minutes of the movie were incredible, with spectacular scenery, excellent choreography and special effects. You can watch these first 7 minutes of the movie on Youtube, I'm going to leave them here:
En esta película el personaje principal es Cole Young un luchador, con una familia y resulta ser un campeón elegido para el torneo de Mortal Kombat. Este personaje no está en ningún juego ,fue creado para esta película y creo que no está mal pero tampoco creo que sea muy interesante este personaje, al verlo no esperaba nada de él, lo mostraron como un perdedor fuera de forma y creo que no mejoró mucho en el camino. También pasé toda la película preguntándome, ¿Quién rayos es este tipo? ¿De donde salió? ¿Por qué?. Aún así para alguién que está viendo la franquicia por primera vez no afecta en nada. Vemos cómo este hombre lucha por el bienestar de su familia yéndose de aventura creyendo en historias locas y viendo a seres increíblemente poderosos.
In this movie the main character is Cole Young a fighter, with a family and he happens to be a champion chosen for the Mortal Kombat tournament. This character is not in any game ,he was created for this movie and I think he is not bad but I also don't think he is very interesting, when I saw him I didn't expect anything from him, they showed him as an out of shape loser and I think he didn't improve much along the way. I also spent the whole movie wondering, who the hell is this guy, where did he come from, why? Still for someone watching the franchise for the first time it doesn't affect anything. We see how this man fights for his family's well being by going on adventures believing crazy stories and seeing incredibly powerful beings.
Los efectos especiales estuvieron bastante bien, nos gustó mucho las referencias del juego, las frases icónicas como “Finish Him”, “Fight” “Fatality”, “Come over here” (Scorpio es el mejor), entre otras.
The special effects were quite good, we really liked the game references, the iconic phrases like "Finish Him", "Fight" "Fatality", "Come over here" (Scorpio is the best), among others.

Lo que no nos gustó. MEGA SPOILERS ALERT
Aunque en términos generales estuvo bastante bien, también tenemos sentimientos encontrados con algunas cosas de la película, cosas en la que no estamos de acuerdo que las enlistare acá:
- El poco protagonismo que tienen Liu Kan (Protagonista real del juego) y Kung Lao
- El extraño caso de un Kano ““bueno”” aunque su personalidad toda engreída y comentarios cómicos nos gustaron bastante.
- No nos parece que el objetivo de Sonya estuvo claro, me parece que la mostraron como una mujer obsesionada por demostrar que lo que decía era verdad.
- Como habré mencionado antes no está mal el plot que se inventaron pero creemos que el cannon real es mucho mejor.
- Hubo pocas escenas con Scorpio, ¡queremos más!
- El asunto de los super poderes que despiertan en Cole, Sonya, Kano y Jax fue bastante raro.
What we didn't like MEGA SPOILERS ALERT.
Although overall it was pretty good, we also have mixed feelings about some things about the movie, things we disagree with and I'll list them here:
- The little protagonism that Liu Kan (real protagonist of the game) and Kung Lao have.
- The strange case of a ""good"" Kano, although we liked his cocky personality and comical comments.
- We don't think Sonya's objective was clear, it seems to me that she was shown as a woman obsessed with proving that what she said was true.
- As I mentioned before, the plot is not bad but we think that the real cannon is much better.
- There were few scenes with Scorpio, we want more!
- The whole super powers awakening thing with Cole, Sonya, Kano and Jax was pretty weird.
¿Huecos Argumentales? / Plot holes?
Si eres nuevo en la franquicia o no conoces bien la historia de los juegos está todo muy claro los malos son malos y vienen de otro mundo. Los buenos son los que están del lado de Raiden que quieren salvar a la tierra y muestran el contexto necesario. Quizá un poco más de información y trasfondo de los personajes de Outworld hubiera ayudado, como saber ¿por qué querían conquistar la tierra? Al final se sabe tanto como sabe el protagonista.
If you're new to the franchise or don't know the history of the games well it's all very clear the bad guys are bad and come from another world. The good guys are the ones on Raiden's side who want to save the earth and show the necessary context. Maybe a little more information and background on the Outworld characters would have helped, like why did they want to conquer the earth? In the end you know as much as the protagonist knows.
Para los que estamos del lado de la franquicia y somos unos geeks, quedan demasiadas preguntas, que si no hacen una continuación podemos quedarnos tranquilos pero si no es así qué pasará con todos estos personajes que mataron ¿volverán? ¿viajes en el tiempo? ¿más personajes sin contexto?
For those of us who are on the side of the franchise and are geeks, too many questions remain, that if they don't make a sequel we can rest easy but if not what will happen to all these characters they killed off will they come back? time travel? more characters without context?
Palabras Finales / Final Words
En general disfrutamos la película de principio a fin, definitivamente es mil veces mejor que las anteriores en live action pero eso sí no esperen algo muy profundo en la trama.
Esto fue todo por hoy, soy nueva escribiendo reviews así que paciencia. Cuando estaba hablando de la película con Ed todo parecía ser más sencillo. Si tienes alguna recomendación déjamelo en los comentarios o si viste la película cuéntame qué piensas.
In general we enjoyed the movie from beginning to end, it is definitely a thousand times better than the previous ones in live action but don't expect something very deep in the plot.
