He visto varias reseñas de esta película en la comunidad, además está nominada a los premios Óscar dentro de las categorías como mejor actor, mejor actriz secundaria/reparto, además de la categoría de mejor maquillaje y peluquería, toda una superproducción que gira en torno a un personaje en una pequeña casa.
Para mí, una producción obligatoria debido a todo lo que se menciona sobre este filme dentro y fuera de Hive, por fin pude verla y ahora deseo compartir un poco sobre mi opinión, así como un pequeño análisis del mensaje de esta historia.
Sinopsis:
Charlie es un hombre que posee una condición de obesidad severa, mientras su salud se deteriora al pasar los días intenta reconectar con su hija, encontrándose con su pasado y con decisiones que tienen su corazón al borde del colapso.
Análisis del filme
Brendan Fraser
Muchos recordaremos a Brendan Fraser, no es un actor muy premiado, pero sin dudas recordaremos algunas de sus películas, en lo particular me gustó mucho su trabajo en la saga de la Momia (especialmente 1 y 2) además películas como Bedazzled y las aventuras de George of the Jungle, son de esas películas que en mi caso se conectan directamente a mi infancia, así que ver a Fraser siendo un foco de atención debido a este filme es sin duda algo emocionante.
Fraser particularmente me sorprende en esta producción, en el párrafo anterior mencioné algunas de las producciones que más recuerdo de este actor, sin embargo, el personaje en cada una de esas películas era totalmente distinto al que observamos en The Whale, su adaptación a un personaje dramático es muy bueno, la actuación gestos y algunos momentos de miedo o angustia las representa muy bien, sin una actuación de talla mundial, el guion se hubiese sentido vacío, pero esos pocos personajes en una pequeña casa, logran un filme que recordaremos por algún tiempo.
Este hombre con obesidad extrema, evidentemente no puede estar totalmente solo, su amiga Liz, interpretada por Hong Chau, que también forma un personaje bastante interesante y vital para seguir con una lógica en el argumento desde mi punto de vista. Aunque el personaje de la hija de Charlie me parece algo tosco, pienso que tuvo una mejor presencia la madre de ella, quien junto a Charlie también tuvieron un momento bastante emotivo con estupendas actuaciones.
Espacio Reducido
Este es quizás una de las características más notorias del filme y así como lo he mencionado muchas veces, tengo especial admiración sobre los filmes que desarrollan su trama en espacios reducidos, mantener la atención en pocos metros de escenario es realmente complicado, más aún cuando los filmes de esta generación son cada vez más emocionantes, en donde algunos casos se reduce la cantidad de lógica para simplemente escapar a los brazos de las emociones trepidantes que nos otorgan los efectos especiales, por esa razón pienso que este tipo de trabajos son realmente impresionantes, no solo te mantiene atento durante los 117 minutos de metraje, sino que también te impacta con el mensaje reflexivo, un gran trabajo que por supuesto es sostenido por un aspecto crucial en este tipo de trabajos, las actuaciones.
Un Buen Mensaje
Charlie es un profesor de inglés, trabaja como profesor online en donde su especialidad es la escritura de ensayos, análisis y opiniones, así que es una buena manera para así como nos lo muestra Charlie podamos analizar un poco el mensaje de este filme.
Así como era de esperarse, el filme se centra en una persona que en nuestra sociedad se cataloga como "diferente", a pesar de que la obesidad no es lo único que lo marca como una persona extraña o repugnante para las demás personas. El mensaje es claramente mostrado al conectar con un personaje que involucra la religión, una manera de decir que es lo que está bien o mal, pero sin la tolerancia de las diferencias.
La sociedad puede aplastar a las buenas personas como Charlie, quien por decidirse a hacer algo "incorrecto" para los ojos de la sociedad se propuso ser feliz, temiendo siempre en la respuesta de sus seres más queridos, ese temor influye en sus decisiones y comportamiento, además, que esa fuerte presión hace que posteriormente sufra de ansiedad que se convierte en una obesidad mortal envuelta en una tormentosa depresión.
El filme nos invita a reflexionar sobre aquellas cosas que nos parezcan "diferentes", incluso analizando la personalidad de la hija de Charlie, la que el mismo describe como "increíble", aunque la sociedad opine distinto, sin embargo, le agrada que sea ella misma y que además exprese sus opiniones sin importar el peso del pensamiento de los demás. Al final de cuentas lo que más importa es preocuparse por las otras personas, extender la ayuda y no ser indiferente ante el dolor ajeno, al saber que su hija es una buena persona se siente completo.
Charlie nos invita a nosotros mismos, no ser el estereotipo de personas que simplemente dejan de pensar por sí mismos solamente para encajar en la sociedad, expresar nuestras opiniones siempre será importante, existe un valor incalculable en esas opiniones en cada uno de nosotros, que incluso el sistema educativo debería aprovechar en lugar de enterrar.

Me parece que es un filme bastante entretenido, con un buen mensaje y excelentes actuaciones, me parece que se introduce en un tema importante más allá de la obesidad, el cual sería el tema que esperaríamos por lógica, sin embargo, The Whale va más allá y nos sorprende con un mensaje muy bueno, teniendo en cuanta que todo sucede en una pequeña casa.
Con esta actuación me podría decir que Brendan Fraser es un firme candidato a llevarse el Óscar, no he visto todas las películas en cuanto a esta categoría, sin embargo, me parece una actuación que le puede colocar entre los favoritos del certamen.

Totalmente, posee el conjunto de características en la que podemos colocarla como una de las mejores producciones del 2022, creo que vale la pena verla y reflexionar sobre este filme, la recomiendo abiertamente.

Film Analysis
Brendan Fraser
Many of us will remember Brendan Fraser, he is not a very award winning actor, but we will certainly remember some of his films, I particularly liked his work in the Mummy saga (especially 1 and 2) plus films like Bedazzled and the adventures of George of the Jungle, are one of those films that in my case connect directly to my childhood, so seeing Fraser being in the spotlight because of this film is certainly something exciting.
Fraser particularly surprises me in this production, in the previous paragraph I mentioned some of the productions I remember most of this actor, however, the character in each of those films was totally different to the one we see in The Whale, his adaptation to a dramatic character is very good, the acting gestures and some moments of fear or anguish portrays them very well, without a world class performance, the script would have felt empty, but those few characters in a small house, achieve a film that we will remember for some time to come.
This extremely obese man obviously can't be totally alone, his friend Liz, played by Hong Chau, who also forms a rather interesting and vital character to follow with a logic to the plot in my view. Although the character of Charlie's daughter seems a bit clunky to me, I thought her mother had a better presence, who along with Charlie also had a rather touching moment with great performances.

This is perhaps one of the most notorious characteristics of the film and as I have mentioned many times, I have a special admiration for films that develop their plot in reduced spaces, keeping the attention in a few meters of scenery is really complicated, even more when the films of this generation are more and more exciting, where in some cases the amount of logic is reduced to simply escape to the arms of the thrilling emotions that the special effects give us, for that reason I think that this kind of work is really impressive, not only keeps you attentive during the 117 minutes of footage, but also impacts you with the reflective message, a great work that of course is supported by a crucial aspect in this kind of work, the performances.
A Good Message
Charlie is an English teacher, he works as an online teacher where his speciality is essay writing, analysis and opinion, so it's a good way for us to be able to analyse the message of this film as well as Charlie shows it to us.
As expected, the film focuses on a person who in our society is labelled as "different", even though obesity is not the only thing that marks him as a strange or repugnant person to other people. The message is clearly shown by connecting with a character that involves religion, a way of saying what is right or wrong, but without the tolerance of differences.
Society can crush good people like Charlie, who by deciding to do something "wrong" in the eyes of society set out to be happy, always fearing the response of his loved ones, that fear influences his decisions and behaviour, in addition, that strong pressure makes him suffer from anxiety that later becomes a deadly obesity wrapped in a stormy depression.
The film invites us to reflect on those things that seem "different" to us, even analysing Charlie's daughter's personality, which he himself describes as "incredible", although society thinks differently, but he likes that she is herself and that she expresses her opinions regardless of the weight of other people's thoughts. At the end of the day what matters most is caring for others, extending help and not being indifferent to the pain of others, knowing that his daughter is a good person makes him feel complete.
Charlie invites us to ourselves, not to be the stereotype of people who simply stop thinking for themselves just to fit into society, expressing our opinions will always be important, there is an incalculable value in those opinions in each of us, that even the education system should take advantage of instead of burying.

I think it is a very entertaining film, with a good message and excellent performances, it seems to me that it introduces an important topic beyond obesity, which would be the topic we would expect by logic, however, The Whale goes further and surprises us with a very good message, taking into account that everything happens in a small house.
With this performance I could say that Brendan Fraser is a strong candidate to win the Oscar, I have not seen all the films in this category, however, it seems to me a performance that can place him among the favourites of the contest.
Do I recommend it?
Totally, it has the set of characteristics in which we can place it as one of the best productions of 2022, I think it is worth seeing it and reflect on this film, I recommend it openly.
