My feelings after watching Don't Look Up? I was astonished! This genius movie talks about the COVID-19 pandemic, replacing the virus with something more visible: a planet killer comet. Just like with Covid, people and authorities won't take the threat seriously at first. The comet was discovered by two humble scientists (Leonardo di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence), without any charm in the eyes of the political establishment. When the President of the United States (Meryl Streep) finally decides to listen to the scientists (of course, when it became politically convenient for her), people react just like they reacted with Covid: who panics and who denies the problem, labelling the scientists as “Marxists”. Leonardo di Caprio and Jennifer Lawrence go through a crazy journey, which too many scientists went through during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cruel journey, during which they are mocked, insulted, exploited, harassed, threatened, punished and fired, by the authorities, the people and the business world. This movie is the perfect satire of all the grotesque figures we have to deal with nowadays. We have the populist president, we have the media greedy of keeping the audience entertained, we the influencers serving their private lives on everyone's mobile and of course, we have the conspiracy theorists claiming the comet doesn't exist. These people will start to believe the threat is real only when they see it, shining in the sky. This is something will never happen with COVID-19. A virus is invisible, so very able to trick people into believing it doesn't exist. People are totally reliant on their eyes. Data is simply a cryptic language they don't speak, maybe created to keep us enslaved. Will planet Earth manage to deflect what seems an inevitable doomsday? I don't want to spoil it, but I can tell the deed will be complicated by the interference of a powerful tech CEO. He impersonates the essence of tech CEOs. They are so self-absorbed into their vision, that they forget to be businessmen. They might even get offended when labelled as such. Money is not their goal. They are prophets chosen to define and decide humanity's future. They are the only hope for humanity's salvation! Their algorithms can be predict everything “with 95.5% accuracy”. If you don't believe in them, you're not worth of working for them. Watch this magnificent, unflattering portrait of the 2021 society. Your image will reflect a little bit in every character, I promise you! ;-)
