It's no secret that the comedy/romance genre despite still being a guilty pleasure for some has lowered its quality a lot, especially when it comes to stories. And is that every day we see romantic comedies that no matter how successful at the box office are many times are full of repetitive stories and with little imagination or changes of plot.
But as usually happens in the film industry are unexpected movies and series that without so much publicity stand out and surprise, like The Big Sick.

The big sick is a romantic comedy that often leans more towards comedy than romance and I love that because it has hundreds of funny tones and black humor jokes that really make it perfect by making us connect immediately with laughter.

The Big Sick begins immediately detaching itself from other romantic comedies where the protagonist is usually super attractive/millionaire/popular or something like that and introduces us to Kumail a protagonist with little charisma but that spills comedy and that, by the way, is a Pakistani. And here is where I pause and tell you friends that you guys are gonna enjoy that Kumail because despite being of his Arab heritage, he does not adopt that form or philosophy of life at all, and on the contrary he is totally irreverent, sarcastic, antireligious, and makes stand up comedy about his Arabic "life" something that will be very important for the plot.

This is when one of the most interesting parts of the movie comes along and it triggers various uncomfortable scenes but that I consider to be one of the funniest of the whole movie, and that is even when Kumail is sarcastic and goes completely against his religious beliefs he does everything in secret, that is to say, that his family knows absolutely nothing about his totally anti-Pakistani lifestyle. On the contrary, Kumail goes along with his family and constantly fulfills his mother's wishes to find him a wife, but of course, Kumail keeps rejecting them all.Kumail is not interested in any of the candidates his family tirelessly seeks for him; he opposes the Muslim way of life and wants to be free to choose a partner, of course, he thinks all of that in secret. And so, one day, Kumail meets Emily.

At first, their relationship comes up in a very spontaneous way and full of funny moments, especially that one where they sleep together for the first time and while still together in bed Emily requests a Uber and guess who answers the request, if yes...Kumail. That's one of the best scenes in the whole movie, just imagine being with a girl in bed and that when she orders a uber to go home the uber turns out to be you! (particularly I had a good time laughing at this scene).

So far it seems that everything is love and laughter but this is where the first big BUT from the movie comes, even though Kumail lives a totally anti-Muslim lifestyle he still doesn't say anything to his family and on the contrary he is afraid of losing them if he goes away from the Muslim traditions so he is inevitably forced to choose between leaving Emily or telling everything to his family and of course he chooses his family, at least at this confusing point. This is undoubtedly a turn that I liked very much because seeing how Kumail behaved up to that point in the movie I never thought he was so afraid to tell them the truth about his lifestyle and beliefs. But well thanks to the decision of our protagonist will trigger other highlights of the film.

Well after a couple of typical scenes of sadness and regret Kumail reconsiders and stands firm with his family revealing to them his true self and belief. At first, his family gets very upset and he is banned as a member of the family but this one does something that I like very much and that is that although his family rejects him, he keeps visiting them and attending dinners and family meetings even if they don't talk to him. I think this is an important point of the movie because it makes us understand that the family is not something we decide or not to have and that on the contrary, we should always be there for them even if they don't want to.

Already having overcome a little the family problems one would hope that the way for Kumail and Emily to reconcile and dedicate themselves to be together would be cleared but...Something arises, Emily suffers a strange illness and falls irremediably into a terrible coma.

Entering at this point the movie is moving away from the comic tone but recovers quickly, when Emily's parents appear and Kumail is almost forced to interact with them, which detonates some very funny scenes especially because who plays Emily's father is the mythical Ray Romano. Although at first, the whole encounter is very uncomfortable, it also gives us the funniest scene of the movie from my point of view, a scene where the satire and black humor about a subject as serious as the attack on the twin towers takes place.Finally, as expected and after a miraculous discovery that helps the doctors save Emily's life, she recovers slowly and although at first, she is still upset about all the ethnic issues that complicated her relationship with Kumail, she finally forgives him and travels to the Kumail show to forgive him and get back together.

This film feels unique, fresh and authentic, something that stands out more for the fact that it is a story based on real facts.And it is that if we think well all the development of the film could have remained in another romantic comedy but the peculiarities that the real history contributes to him, plus the notable care that they have had with the script to maintain the balance between the humor and the drama, and a sensational casting elevate this title very above the average.
In addition to how I commented in some paragraphs back, this movie contains some scenes that are simply a show for the comedy as the anthological scene of 9/11.
Another highlight is the interpretation of Kumail Nanjiani who dominates this character based on his own life and in the uncomfortable family situations, both with his parents and her parents.
