Movie Review #31 - Hands of Stone

Review by @josalarcon2 · 2478d · of Hands of Stone

Sports movies that are taken to a dramatic level are often my favorite because I love the process of winning, losing, and rising from the ashes that so many sports movies use to highlight and add intensity to the plot. That's why today I want to share my opinion on one of my favorite boxing movies, Hands of Stone.

# # Story Overview # This is a film focusing on the sporting and personal life of one of the legends of Hispanic boxing, a man who emerged from nowhere and with hard work and effort became one of the most recognized boxers of his time, a man with a temple and an incomparable mental force, a man who thought he was able to conquer the world and thanks to that mentality was able to do it. The plot takes us step by step through all the road that Roberto Duran had to walk to reach greatness, a greatness that was tarnished by his life so extroverted and irresponsible, because yes, like most boxers Roberto Duran was excellent in the ring but when he came out of it was practically a child, he was totally unpredictable and able to do all kinds of nonsense, nonsense that cost him to have been even bigger than he was.

The story unfolds at a great pace because it allows us to see very important passages of Roberto Duran's life combined with all the political conflict that also tormented his life constantly. Like many other sports movies and especially boxing, this story is full of ups and downs because it shows us in detail the different facets of the boxer through memorable scenes that sometimes become tedious because they are too irrelevant for what interests us, boxing.

# # Personal Review # It's difficult for me not to like a film of this type, especially when there are actors who make such real interpretations that allow us to transport ourselves completely to the time we're watching. The characters stand out a lot because they manage to develop the behavior of the characters in a great way and that is undoubtedly appreciated when we are seeing a biopic with well-known characters. However, the highlights of this film are the fights, fights that lead us to remember the great scenes of Rocky fighting against all kinds of opponents and putting his life constantly at risk to show that he was the best, this film gets that, fantastically manages to transmit the intensity of fights that meant everything to a man who had nothing.

Another really emotional aspect and that I liked very much is how the creators managed to include so sharply all the political conflict that Panama lived at that time, a conflict that motivated Roberto Duran and that made him want to go further to demonstrate the value of his country despite the situation in which he was.

# This is a film that magnificently manages to show us in detail the life of a complex man, full of emptiness and with a mentality that constantly got him into trouble, a film very well made, with great performances and above all with a great use of technical resources that fantastically complement the plot through a beautiful photography. This is not the best sports film I have ever seen, but it is one of the best biopics I have ever seen, because it captures in an emotional, dramatic and intense way all the nature and personality of a man who at the end of his career was tired but was squeezed to the maximum by those who managed his career.
