Director of week #1: Alfonso Cuarón.

In recent years we have seen how simple stories powered by visual camera effects and creative highlights have made simple films stand out enormously, as they focus on highlighting the best aspects of their characters allowing us to feel included in the story, something that makes us connect more with everything we're seeing. One of those stories is undoubtedly that of Roma, a visually fantastic film with a beautiful rhythm and atmosphere that tells us simple facts in a different way through the strength and feeling of its characters.

[Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/426426-roma?language=en-US) # Roma is a film without complications, with a story centered on a little intense drama focused on a somewhat chaotic time, yes, this is not the most exciting film but one of the most beautiful and well-directed I have ever seen. Usually what catches us from the movies are the stories, however here the highlight is the way the director chose to tell that story, a story focused on the little drama of a family leaving the basic upbringing of their daughters to their maid, a maid who reflects the contrast of classes in a country that is constantly being hit by politics and complicated events. Finally, as I said, it is difficult to say that Roma has an interesting and innovative story, because it doesn't have it, however in some strange way the film manages to submerge us in this chaotic world of black and white that tells us the life of a maid with few resources who constantly has to face the hundreds of problems that someone poor suffers in a country with political problems, the plot stands out mainly for how it develops, as I said the story is something cliché, but still manages to catch us thanks to the connection it manages to create with reality.

This is a film that at a technical level is perfect, there is no other word, the whole process of armed that the director made with the different wide and continuous shots is wonderful; we never see an evident cut in the scenes everything seems to have been recorded at first attempt in a single continuous shot that ends up becoming a great dance of fantastic situations, situations that stand out for the strength and emotion they capture through a tense atmosphere that never stops. I really don't know how Alfonso Cuarón was able to elaborate something so precise, detailed and beautiful, because the truth looks extremely complicated, but well nothing is impossible for one of the best film directors of today. The way in which they managed to combine all the political backgrounds with a simple story of life through a young woman is impressive because it lets us see the reflection of a reality that nobody had told, a reality that feels new, intense and very sad.

# I really enjoyed this film because it reminded me of those black and white classics where the dramatic atmosphere was palpable and where the simplest characters were able to stand out for the incredible contribution they made to the plot. Obviously, this isn't a perfect film, but it is a film that is well above average, a film that doesn't fight with pretensions but rather skips them to become something different, something visually magical that is very similar to a prime opera because of the constant emotion it manages to transmit. Perhaps the lowest point of this film is the time factor, because at some point as entertaining as the shots are, they become too common and that undoubtedly makes the film feel elongated, bordering on the tedious.

Without a doubt this is one of my favorite films from the technical and visual point of view, I enjoy every scene, every extended shot and every shot that was used to give that peculiarity to a simple story with little force. Surely there are a lot of divided opinions with this film and I understand it because it is difficult to appreciate something that stands out more for how it was done than for what it tells, in this film we will find many clichés that undoubtedly take away emotion but for me at the same time add strength. I hadn't seen a film for a long time that reminded me of the classic era of cinema, where the value of a film wasn't determined by the amount of effects or the complexity of its story.
