The Banshees of Inisherin (or The Spirits of the Island, as it has also been titled in Spanish) is one of the films with the most nominations for this year's Oscars, and has already won several awards for film, screenplay, lead and supporting roles at various festivals and awards. Made in 2022, it has as director and screenwriter the Anglo-Irish Martin McDonagh, with a recognized career in theater, who offered us about 5 years ago a strong denunciation film: Three Billboards for a Crime, starring the excellent American actress, also very awarded, Frances McDormand. The film features Colin Farrell in the lead role and Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan in supporting roles.

The story focuses on the relationship between two inhabitants of an imaginary Irish island: Pádraic -a country producer- and Colm -a musician and composer-, between whom there was an old friendship, but which is abruptly cut short by the latter. Perplexed by Colm's attitude, Pádraic will insist on knowing the cause of this unexpected change and will try to save the friendship with somewhat naive actions, but which will trigger events of harsh consequences.
There are many aspects that could be considered in the story and the subject matter (since it cannot be limited to a single theme) that the film deals with. It presents us with lonely beings, without future or hope, misunderstood, abandoned, despised... These traits are embodied by Pádraic and Colm, but also by the former's sister, Siobhán, and Dominic, a "retarded" young man.
These relationships are part of a social and moral environment, where interactions with other villagers come into play in which hostility and cultural and ethical "paralysis", as one of the great Irish writers, James Joyce, would adduce, of characters from his homeland stand out. Among them the odious "witch" (a kind of "banshee"), the lout police chief, the gossipy woman in the store, the inert tavern keeper....
It is curious that Pádraic is always accompanied by animals, especially by his little donkey Jenny, but also by cows and horses that enter his house, as a way of signifying his almost primitive identity with nature, but also his loneliness.
Thus, we have an asphyxiating atmosphere with no way out, where idleness, bitterness, desolation, aggressiveness, dementia, among the main thematic factors, are mixed.

One of the aspects of the film, where dialogue is not abundant -in tune with its atmosphere and theme- that remain engraved in our perception and spectactorial memory, are certain laconic phrases that speak of the quality of the literary script and the psyche of the main characters. For example, those spoken by Colm, Pádraic and Pádraic's sister.
In Colm, speaking to Pádraic: "I no longer like you"; "I no longer have room for boredom in my life"; "I entertain myself while postponing the inevitable".
On Pádraic (about Colm or communicating to him): "If you're depressed, you could keep it a secret, like the rest of us"; "You used to be nice, or maybe you never were"; "You turn out to be just like the others." Or to his sister: "You never feel lonely."
On Pádraic's sister: "Too many people judge on this island already."

While the character of Pádriac captivates us by his innocence and elementariness, in addition to the loneliness already mentioned, similarly happens with Colm, who condenses, in a tragic way (perhaps there is no other way), through his "escape" from the relationship with Pádraic, the depression of the artist, the withdrawal from the world, which in many ways could also be an expression of selfishness and intransigence.
It is Colm's composition, which he announces in the story, that gives the film its title: "The Banshees of Inisherin": "I don't think there are spirits that presage death, they just sit and watch for entertainment". Which would manifest the decline of the sense that can animate a community. Through Colm's speech, the filmmaker comes to the underlying vision: the "banshees", that is, "the spirits that used to warn of impending death with their howling, may no longer even bother to howl to warn of deaths and just sit and watch people die". This is the vision that McDonagh tries to convey to us in the character of the witch or pythoness, who at the end, on the hill, just watches.
Finally, I would like to say something about the technical aspects, what we call in semiotics, the form of expression. We advance that the setting was achieved by an excellent photography, directed by Ben Davis. By a lighting of great art, that goes from light to dark, with framing that goes from beautiful panoramas to close-ups, with a precise camera movement, we enjoy a very broad, rich and clear view of the landscape (with its greenery, stones, animals, sea), of the houses, the tavern and the city. I highlight the perspective on the Irish cross and the statues of the Virgin Mary, as they are signs that tell us about the Catholicism of this population in a social environment that seems to be in contradiction with this religious attitude.
