[Films Critics] The Cabin in the Woods

Review by @jsxchemistry · 2478d · of The Cabin in the Woods

Terror movies have been decaying in quality and becoming mediocre for years, there are really few productions that manage to develop an atmosphere that really frightens and causes a psychological suspense capable of trapping us by the way it twists our senses, making us really react to dark and gloomy scenes. They have gone so far down that they are for my simple films generally made to raise money, nothing more. However, in a genre of decadence it is the alternative horror and low-budget films that have been standing out and becoming real jewels. One of those jewels undoubtedly has to be The Cabin in the Woods, an entertaining horror movie that has a lot of bizarre and comic nuances that make it really great.

# # Going deeper into story. # Continuing with what I told you at the beginning of the review, The Cabin in the Woods is a film that totally surprised me and that thank God I found because it showed me that no matter the genre, if you do something different and risky well done you will hardly fail. This is a film that doesn't focus on any haunted cabin as many will intuit, in this film the cabin that a group of young people go on vacation to is used as a means to an end, an end that will lead young people to an almost imminent death. #

# The plot of this film places us within the holidays of a group of college students who go from recreational retreat to a small cabin in the woods where there is a basement that hides dozens of mysterious objects, objects that contain a mysterious additive to the plot and that marks the fate of our young college students. After entering the basement and exploring it, our young people end up running into a lot of objects without knowing that each one of these mysterious objects is responsible for unleashing a relentless "plague/curse/evil being" on them, that is to say that depending on the objects that they unknowingly choose something evil and murderer will chase them to death, **WTF**. Yes, this is a film that uses terror as an industry to collect sacrifices, in this film we don't have any murderer, monster or demonic being who spontaneously wants to murder and wreak destruction on society, here all those references to horror movies are controlled by a kind of organization that is in charge of creating terrifying scenarios and unleashing all kinds of killer beings and creatures with the apparent purpose of silencing other superior beings through human sacrifices.

It sounds and it's a bit bizarre but the plot is actually not that complicated and in fact it's extremely entertaining because it's totally different from any other horror and suspense movie we've seen before. On the one hand we have the terror scenes where a family of zombies is hunting each young one of the cabin host to kill them one by one and on the other hand we have the interactions of the controllers of the terror scenarios monitoring the details of the "hunt" and even betting on the order of the deaths. The rhythm of the plot is excellent nothing stops or goes too fast, the story is developing exactly as it should develop marking very good times where the climax is distributed perfectly.

The Horror Company.

The most relevant factor of this film is undoubtedly the inclusion of a company that controls all the horror scenarios, it is literally as if we saw the scenes of every horror movie that has been made from the live booth, a group of people who are responsible for creating the perfect atmosphere for the murders to occur without problems. We can see how this company keeps different monsters, entities and killers to use depending on the situations and groups of characters they choose.

# It is extremely entertaining to see how despite being a company dedicated to putting people in situations that lead to their death, they continue to face the same problems of a common company, employees, interns, salaries and other elements that wonderfully complement the construction of an intangible character that influences the plot. It should be noted that the scenarios that this create are really detailed, no cheap environments and atmospheres, each hunt is coldly calculated for different types of audiences according to the desires of those beings who demand those human sacrifices in order to not completely end humanity.

That is another important factor in the plot and that affects the decision of all the characters, because yes, nobody wants to be killed but what happens if you are destined to die so that something worse does not happen? The film succeeds excellently in posing psychological challenges that affect people's decision-making. Each terrifying aspect is detailed and precise to complement the central plot of the film.

# # Final Thoughts # A different movie, that feels very fresh and entertaining, that manages through intangible characters to group the best cinematographic materials from other horror movies and use them as elements that complement a simple plot, but that make it different and much better than what we are usually used to. The film not only has a good script but also builds very well the characters before killing them, even mocks them for the order in which they must die, also takes good advantage of the typical elements of terror that do not seem to be left over here, the bloody scenes are few but necessary as well as the psychological suspense, basically this is like a huge compilation of the best of terror. #

My Score: 7,7/10
