The late nineties had a lot of great movies and I'd like to watch as many as I can, here's a review on the last one I saw...happy reading🙃!!!

The Devil's Advocate is an American paranormal horror drama based on same titled novel by Andrew Neirderman. It was first released in October 1997 after the book was published in 1990. The movie starrs two people I love, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron🥰, as the protagonists.

The summary in one sentence: "When something seems too good to be true it probably is".

Plot

After the selection and a favourable verdict, the head of the firm, John Milton, offers Kevin a job at the firm. On acceptance of the offer Kevin moves to New York with his wife,Maryann, and they start life afresh in the new city.

The job has a lot of perks; huge pay, a luxury apartment, big named clients, fancy dinner parties etc. They are both excited at first but later discover that the job has downsides too as Kevin is always at work. This takes a toll on their marriage as they start to drift apart.

Maryann soon starts "seeing things". She tells Kevin about it but he dismisses them as hallucinations. Things get worse as Maryanne's health deteriorates but Kevin continues to work instead of looking after her. He fears that choosing her over work will make him resent her for costing him his case.

A series of horrifying events reveal Milton's true identity, his intentions and Kevin's role in it all.

Movie Analysis

I'd say this movie found me as I didn't go looking for it, it just popped up on a list of suggested movies so I added it to my watchlist.

In recent movies starring Keanu Reeves, his character is usually brooding and eccentric like in John Wick. He was a totally different person in this movie and it was great to see. This is the first early Keanu film I've seen so I was a little surprised to see him like this.

Charlize too had a while different vibe about her. Her character in this movie was so young and vibrant (before things went South) which is a sharp contrast to her character in Old Guard. Picture this; pretty girl next door turned leather jacket wearing badass😁, that's the way I see her transition.

What I liked most about the movie is the unexpected turn the story took. I definitely didn't see it coming, I went from "aww cute" to "shit! What the fudge just happened".

The not so great thing about the movie though is that it has a lot of loopholes. Some things don't totally make sense and this leaves me with a lot of unanswered questions.

The movie didn't totally fulfill my expectations of "horror". The aspects of the film that were supposed to be horrifying were just a little scary. I can say though that the movie industry has come a long way since then as they've really improved in this aspect. The attempt at horror in this movie is laughable compared to what we see these days and this shows growth which is great.

The cast beautifully compliment their various roles. Each of them brought their characters to life especially Charlize as Maryann. Her acting really showed it all, made me understand the character and feel what she was going through. Another impressive role was Al Pacino as John Milton.

Summary

Having in mind that no movie is perfect I'd say this film is a good one. It was entertaining and it kept me guessing till the end. If you are interested in seeing a movies from the late nineties I think you should check this one out.

I was a little vague with the plot because I didn't want to give any spoilers but I assure you that the movie is much more than what I wrote about it.

I give the movie a 7 out of 10 because in my perspective it is definitely worth your time.

The Devil's Advocate es un drama de terror paranormal estadounidense basado en la novela del mismo título de Andrew Neirderman. Se estrenó por primera vez en octubre de 1997 después de que se publicara el libro en 1990. La película está protagonizada por dos personas a las que quiero, Keanu Reeves y Charlize Theron , como protagonistas.

El resumen en una frase: "Cuando algo parece demasiado bueno para ser verdad, probablemente lo sea".

Kevin Lomax, un exitoso abogado defensor en Florida que nunca ha perdido un caso, llama la atención de un prestigioso bufete de abogados en New York que lo invita a ayudar a elegir un jurado para un caso en curso.

Después de la selección y un veredicto favorable, el jefe de la firma, John Milton, le ofrece a Kevin un trabajo en la firma. Al aceptar la oferta, Kevin se muda a New York con su esposa, Maryann, y comienzan una nueva vida en la nueva ciudad.

El trabajo tiene muchas ventajas; una gran paga, un apartamento de lujo, clientes de renombre, cenas elegantes, etc. Ambos están emocionados al principio, pero luego descubren que el trabajo también tiene desventajas, ya que Kevin siempre está trabajando. Esto afecta su matrimonio a medida que comienzan a distanciarse.

Maryann pronto comienza a "ver cosas". Ella le cuenta a Kevin sobre eso, pero él los descarta como alucinaciones. Las cosas empeoran a medida que la salud de Maryanne se deteriora, pero Kevin continúa trabajando en lugar de cuidarla. Análisis de películas

Diría que esta película me encontró porque no fui a buscarla, simplemente apareció en una lista de películas sugeridas, así que la agregué a mi lista de seguimiento.

En películas recientes protagonizadas por Keanu Reeves, su personaje suele ser melancólico y excéntrico como en John Wick. Era una persona totalmente diferente en esta película y fue genial verlo. Esta es la primera película temprana de Keanu que veo, así que me sorprendió un poco verlo así.

Charlize también tenía una vibra un poco diferente sobre ella. Su personaje en esta película era tan joven y vibrante (antes de que las cosas se fueran al sur) que contrasta fuertemente con su personaje en Old Guard. Imagínate esto; linda chica de al lado convertida en chaqueta de cuero vistiendo badass😁, esa es la forma en que veo su transición.

Lo que más me gustó de la película es el giro inesperado que tomó la historia. Definitivamente no lo vi venir, pasé de "aww lindo" a "¡mierda! ¿Qué diablos acaba de pasar?".

Sin embargo, lo que no es tan bueno de la película es que tiene muchas lagunas. Algunas cosas no tienen mucho sentido y esto me deja con muchas preguntas sin respuesta.

La película no cumplió totalmente mis expectativas de "horror". Los aspectos de la película que se suponía que iban a ser aterradores daban un poco de miedo. Sin embargo, puedo decir que la industria del cine ha recorrido un largo camino desde entonces, ya que realmente ha mejorado en este aspecto. El intento de terror en esta película es risible en comparación con lo que vemos en estos días y esto muestra un crecimiento que es genial.

El elenco complementa maravillosamente sus diversos papeles. Cada uno de ellos dio vida a sus personajes, especialmente Charlize como Maryann. Su actuación realmente lo mostró todo, me hizo entender al personaje y sentir por lo que estaba pasando. Otro papel impresionante fue el de Al Pacino como John Milton.

Resumen

Teniendo en cuenta que ninguna película es perfecta, diría que esta película es buena. Fue entretenido y me mantuvo en vilo hasta el final. Si está interesado en ver películas de finales de los noventa, creo que debería ver esta.

Fui un poco vago con la trama porque no quería dar spoilers pero les aseguro que la película es mucho más de lo que escribí sobre ella.

Le doy a la película un 7 de 10 porque, desde mi punto de vista, definitivamente vale la pena.
