Today I'm going to take you on a cinematic journey to 1922 when the film was made, which in time became a cult, and directors from all over the world were inspired by this work. 1922 is not a very favorable time for the creation of horror, back then a more subtle macabre reigned than what we get now.
Director Benjamin Christensen spent nearly three years creating his extraordinary masterpiece. A film that stood out strongly with effects typical of the period. In creating his greatest work ( only appreciated years later) he delved into the world of the occult giving the audience a rather specific film. Haxan consists of 7 parts ( I suspect that this was a special procedure so that people could cool down after the scary scenes for those years). While the first part is based on the principle of more of a documentary and rearrangement of old engravings and discussion of various topics concerning the devil and hell. In the next part we get a fictionalized story that takes place in 1488, where we learn about a medieval town and how women lived in those days, when there were frequent inquisitions.
The film shows how the church convinced women to do something magical by tempting them to free themselves or threaten the lives of their children. Some women gave in and revealed their "magical" properties and so were condemned to the stake. Others were subjected to various tortures, not only psychological, but fancy devices that caused mutilation of the body.
The interrogation was often on the principle of having the accused tell who else was being led to witchcraft and the inquisition would then go after more women. The film initially gives the illusion that all these witches are real, have some magical properties, can fly or cast charms, so that the viewer can get caught up in this shaky religious value system.
Over time, however, it slowly presents this other darker face of the world where women were captured and killed for nothing in the name of the church. The beginning of the film perfectly shows that hell is on earth and people are fried in pots.
The film features a brilliantly done Devil who often tempts his victims.
Häxan is a documentary that tries to understand what was really going on and why as many as 8 million women had to die. A dark horror film, a horror film because nevertheless many of these events took place, and helpless women could do nothing.
The film touches on the problem of superstition because while it used to be controversial for society , until now people believe in various strange magical things. What stands out most about this film is the subject matter, because witches have been a taboo for the church for many years thinking they did good. The film often exposes the structures of the church when they deliberately torture or drown people in the name of God. The film also tries to show that mental illness has existed for a long time and has affected every fluke of society. If you like dark cinema and the film, which was an inspiration for horror filmmakers, it is worth a look, if you like the theme of witches I also recommend, although initially the film shows witches so that the viewer can get into the mood.
As a whole, as a film documentary it is a work that shows a piece of this unloved history, where torture in the name of God was a daily occurrence. Worth watching 8/10

Reżyser Benjamin Christensen przez blisko trzy lata tworzył swoje niezwykle dzieło. Film, który mocno wyróżniał się efektami typowych dla tamtego okresu. Tworząc swoje największe dzieło ( po latach dopiero doceniony) zagłębił się w świat okultyzmu dając widzom dość specyficzny film. Haxan składa się z 7 części ( podejrzewam, ze był to specjalny zabieg by ludzie mogli ochłonąć bo strasznych jak na tamte lata scenach). O ile pierwsza cześć jest na zasadzie bardziej dokumentu i przestawianie starych rycin i omówienie rożnej tematyki dotyczącej diabła i piekła. Tak w kolejnej dostajemy już fabularyzowana historie, która ma miejsce w 1488 gdzie poznajemy średniowieczne miasteczko oraz to jak kobiety żyły w tamtych czasach kiedy dochodziło do częstych inkwizycji.
Film ukazuje jak kościół przekonywał kobiety by coś zrobily magicznego kusząc je uwolnieniem czy zagrożeniem życia ich dzieci. Niektóre kobiety poddawały się i wyjawiała „magiczne” właściwości i tak zostawały skazane na stos. Inne były poddawane rożnym torturom nie tylko psychicznym, ale wymyślnym urządzeniom które powodowały okaleczenia ciała.
Przesłuchanie często bylo na zasadzie by oskarżona powiedziała kto jeszcze doprowadzał się czarów i inkwizycja następnie szła po kolejne kobiety. Film początkowo daje złudzenie, ze wszystkie te czarownice są prawdziwe, maja jakieś magiczne właściwości, potrafią latać czy rzucać uroki, by widz mógł wczuć się w ten zachwiany system wartości religijnej.
Z czasem powoli przedstawia jednak ta druga mroczniejsza twarz świata gdzie kobiety były za nic łapane i zabijane w imię kościoła. Początek filmu idealnie ukazuje, ze piekło jest na ziemi, a ludzie smażą się w garach.
W filmie pojawia się genialnie zrobiony Diabeł, który często kusi swoje ofiary.
Häxan to dokument, który stara się zrozumieć co tak naprawdę działo się i czemu musiało zginąć aż 8 milionów kobiet. Mroczny horror, horror bo jednak wiele tych wydarzeń mialo miejsca, a bezbronne kobiety nie mogły nic zrobić.
Film dotyka problemu zabobonów bo o ile kiedyś można bylo to kontrowersyjne dla społeczeństwa , tak do tej pory ludzie wierza w różne dziwne magiczne rzeczy. Co najbardziej wyróżnia ten film to tematyka, bo czarownice to dla kościoła tabu od wielu lat myśląc, ze czynił dobro. Film często obnaża struktury kościoła kiedy to z premedytacją torturują czy topią ludzi w imię Boga. Film tez stara się pokazać, ze choroby psychiczne od dawna istnieją i dotykały każda grypę społeczna. Jeśli lubicie mroczne kino oraz film, który był inspiracja dla twórców horrorów to warto się przyjrzeć, jeśli lubicie tematykę czarownic tez polecam choć początkowo w filmie są ukazane czarownice by widz mógł się wczuć w owy klimat.
Całość jako dokument filmowy to dzieło, które ukazuje kawałek tej nielubianej historii, gdzie tortury w imię Boga były codziennością. Warto obejrzeć 8/10
