A strange film, this is the mildest way to describe the latest Netflix production.
On the one hand, it tries to build a climate by means of emotional horror, where we accompany a louder heroine and how hard it is for her in life after the loss of her beloved mum, on the other hand Netflix tries to be "up to date" and serves a little occultism.
It's clear that the film would have had potential if the two stories had been separated and focused on one, but this is how we get an intriguing horror film that takes place in the mind of the protagonist, and in a moment we see a reference to the film The Wicker Basket Monster.
Like a parabola, the film has some interesting moments and then the worst imaginable scene.
The very concept of the strange hotel appealed to me, as did the building of an aura of mystery around it, the night cries of strange flashing lights.
It all worked nicely.
But then it all goes the wrong way, a badly directed film where suddenly from an atmospheric hotel we get a hotel with two psychopaths who ritually sacrifice women.
Sounds absurd? Well, the director must have thought so himself, because for a good part of the film he tries to explain the meaning of the box and what it really is, but towards the end he must have succumbed to the pressure of the producers and followed the lowest line of resistance. I am complaining, however, something from the box is very nicely done, you can feel here that they have made an effort and it looks intriguing.
The finale, unfortunately disappoints, while most of the time the director shows the viewer the path, at the very end he blows the whole concept away by creating a "new generation".
Unfortunately the finale leaves a lot to be desired. The whole film held together, especially the first half, but in the second half you can see the lack of a sensibly led plot, while the third act is chaos and disbelief that someone could come up with such a stupid idea of "inheriting"
A film about immigration is always an interesting subject, and if it was an emotional horror film, it would be all the more great, but the director had enough ideas only for the first 45 minutes, then he follows the same patterns and finally ends it in the least interesting way.
For a Sunday lunch the film is just right, but after the screening everyone will forget.

Dziwny film, tak można najłagodniej określić najnowsza produkcje Netflix.
Z jednej strony stara się budowanie klimatu za pomocą horroru emocjonalnego gdzie towarzyszymy głośniej bohaterce i tym jak jej ciężko w życiu po utracie ukochanej mamie, z drugiej zaś Netflix stara się być „na czasie” i serwuje trochę okultyzmu.
Widać, ze film miałby potencjał, gdyby rozerwać te dwie historie i skupić się na jednej, a tak raz dostajemy intrygujący horror, który rozgrywa się w umyśle bohaterki, a za chwile widzimy nawiązanie do filmu potwór z wiklinowego kosza.
Film niczym parabola raz miewa interesujące momenty, by za chwile rzucić najgorzej wymyślona scena.
Sam koncept dziwnego hotelu mi się spodobał, tak jak i budowanie otoczki tajemniczości wokół niego, nocne płacze dziwne migające światło.
To wszystko ładnie działało.
Jednak później wszystko idzie w zła stronę, złe pokierowany film gdzie nagle z budującego klimat hotelu dostajemy hotel z dwoma psychopatami, którzy rytualnie składają kobiety.
Brzmi absurdalnie? No cóż reżyser chyba sam tak myślał, bo przez skuszą cześć filmu stara się wytłumaczyć sens pudełka czym tak na prawdę jest, jednak pod koniec ulega chyba naporowi producentów i idzie po najmniejszej lini oporu. Narzekam, jednakże, coś z pudełka jest bardzo fajnie wykonane, czuć tutaj, ze przyłożono się i wyglada to intrygująco.
Finał, niestety zawodzi, o ile większość czasu reżyser pokazuje widzowi ścieżkę, tak na samym końcu wywala cały koncept tworząc „nowe pokolenie”.
Niestety finał wiele zostawia do życzenia. Cały film w miarę się trzymał, a najbardziej pierwsza połowa, jednak w drugiej połowie widać braki sensownie poprowadzonej fabuły, zaś trzeci akt to chaos i niedowierzenie, ze ktoś mógł wpaść na tak głupi pomysł z „odziedziczeniem”
Film o imigracji to zawsze ciekawy temat, a jeśli byłby to horror emocjonalny to tym bardziej byłby świetny, jednak reżyserowi pomysłu starczyło tylko na pierwsze 45 minut, później idzie już schematami by ostatecznie zakończyć to w najmniej interesujący sposób.
Do niedzielnego obiadu film w sam raz, jednak po seansie wszyscy zapomną.
