I experimented during a period when I had a lot of free time to watch movies and read books. We know Hollywood and other entertainment producers release lots of films yearly. During the award season, some films are nominated as the best in different categories. For the year in reference, I tried to watch all the movies that were declared the best and was sorely disappointed!
Most of these movies were boring and I wondered how they were awarded and named blockbusters for the year. I guess politics could have played a part while the deserving movies are swept under the rug and eclipsed by the awarded ones.
One movie I watched and believe should be a blockbuster is Beyond The Lights (2014) but sadly, it's not. I was introduced to Ms Gugu Mbatha-Raw, a fine actress in the British film, Belle (2013). When I caught a glimpse of this movie's trailer, I was excited because her performance as a music superstar was astonishing and excellent.
Beyond The Lights is an American romance written and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, a fine director who did great work. I did not know Gugu Mbatha-Raw could sing so beautifully. It was like she'd been a musician all her life —she fits perfectly into the role of a pop star.
She acted alongside Nate Parker and Minnie Driver as this famous music star whom the world believed she had everything but she did not. The pressures of fame negatively affected her and her mother/manager did not notice. This movie brought into focus her mental health and she fought for the right to love whom she wanted without the compulsion of what was expected of her as a star.
This is the kind of movie that should garner high positive reviews —a movie that draws attention to the downside of being famous, celebrities treated as though they are owned by the public and must live their lives to suit the public's wishes, parents pushing their children to be perfect without considering their mental health and wellness.
This movie received 6.9 stars out of 10 on Imdb. It was nominated for different awards but won none except Gugu Mbatha-Raw who won the Rising Star category of Capri Hollywood award.source
In my opinion, I believe this movie deserves some awards and should be highly rated. Sadly, it joined the group of unique, brilliant but underrated movies. If you have watched it, what is your take on this?
