I have a collection of Christmas movies I watch every December just for fun and This Christmas (2007) is one of them. From the movie date, you can see it's a little old but very enjoyable.
This Christmas is an entertaining African-American, Christmas comedy movie written, produced and directed by Preston A. Whitmore II. It's about a boisterous family with many issues, just like every other family. I love that this movie featured a great cast such as Idris Elba, Loretta Devine, Chris Brown, Regina King, Sharon Leal, Lauren London etc.
Summary Of The Plot
The Whitfield family gathers for the first time in four years for Christmas at their family house and in such family gatherings, there would definitely be lots of drama.
The dramas were all about the secrets this family kept from each other. Secrets like a son who was secretly married to a white woman, a daughter whose husband cheated on her and she knew all along, a son who owed money to a couple of guys who wanted to hurt him, a mother who secretly divorced her husband and was living with her boyfriend and the youngest son nicknamed "Baby" who was afraid to tell his mother about his dream to become a famous singer.
Throughout the movie, this family worked around their issues and tried to solve them. Despite their problems and secrets, they loved and accepted each other's weaknesses.
Review
The first thing I loved about this movie is the music. The soundtracks for some of the scenes were great and carefully selected. Most of all, I love the stage performance by Chris Brown of his song, Try a Little Tenderness.
Also, I appreciate that Preston A. Whitmore II did not attempt to make the family a happy, jolly, utopian one like some Christmas movies. This family had its ups and downs and yet they survived, cried, laughed and loved. As viewers watch, they would be interested in predicting how the issues were resolved and they would also pick which character to side with.
The cast did an outstanding job interpreting the script and the director did an even better job producing something worth watching over and over again.
I always enjoy watching this movie yearly, especially because Idris Elba is one of the actors! Haha. This movie makes for an excellent, delightful holiday treat that I would recommend for a family to enjoy. I'll give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
