Thrilling Collaboration: Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer In Free Guy (2021)

Review by @kemmyb · 1580d · of Free Guy

Since binge-watching all the seasons of the TV series, Killing Eve, I have been fascinated with British actress, Jodie Comer. She's a great actor and outstandingly interpreted the role of an assassin/psychopath in the mentioned tv series. Also, I've always loved Ryan Reynolds simply for his humour. The guy is terrific as an actor and hilarious. Anytime I come across his movies, I know I'll have a good time. Now, imagine a performance of these two actors in one movie doing what they do best. There's only one word —spectacular!

I know you may say I'm late to the movie Free Guy (2021) but I'm glad I was able to watch it now and not when it was released.

The performance of these two actors produced a thrilling action-comedy that viewers would love to watch again and again. Ryan Reynolds, a rogue AI player in a video game, brings out the humour in every scene and Jodie Comer is the badass game maker and player.

The casting in the movie is good, they are all loveable characters including the billionaire villain, Antwan, who should be disliked for being the bad guy but his jokes, demeanour and charm are funny too. If a person is not careful, you may actually think he's a good guy. He portrayed what most company management and CEOs are after when it comes to business decisions —money, nothing else matters. But for our heroes, they were after creating a free world for the artificial intelligence characters in their game to live the way they want to.

One character I did not like is Mouser, a staff of Soonami Studio because he did whatever Antwan asked him to do without questioning the reasoning behind it. The guy was so annoying!

One issue that bugged me a bit about the movie is the realisation that similar video games are all about violence —the shootings, the weapons, the ammunition, moving on to another level of higher violence and so on. I know this appeals to most gamers, that is, pursuing a goal or solving an issue, which is what gives us purpose in real life but I wish these games did not have to be about violence all the time.

I believe this was what propelled Guy (played by Ryan Reynolds) to ask the Non-Playable Character (NPCs) of Free City, whether or not they enjoyed being shot at, held at gunpoint etc and the response was a loud NO.

Another part of the movie I enjoyed was the visual effects and stunts. The transitions between the game and real-life were smooth, especially for Jodie Comer who had to play both as her avatar in the game and herself in real life.

The scenes I enjoyed the most are where Molotov Girl and Guy try to get evidence of the stolen source code and end up fighting the guards there. Also, the scene where Dude is put into the game to stop Guy from crossing Free City was another comic relief in the movie.

Overall, I love this movie and the collaboration of Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. I hope these two will act together again sometime soon. I give this movie a 4.5 stars out of 5.

Yes ! And that strange things about the glasses ! Who would make a game where if the characters lost their glasses they can't see the UI again ? That would be the strangest online game ever !

It was pretty entertaining to see indeed ! Great review ! Now qi want to watch it again 😁 !PIZZA

although... I watched it earlier than now watching movies these days is pretty tiring because I don't get to see alot of the guys I watched growing up.

So I look out for the cast before watching a movie, and Ryan never lets me down

I liked this movie A LOT, good actors, Ryan Reynolds without a doubt is one of the best, although I also like Joe Keery and I'm a fan of him since Stranger Things. If anyone hasn't seen it yet I recommend it too, you won't regret it.

    Thanks for this good review.
