Young Washington chronicles the early years as a soldier of a man who is a legend and who has contributed immensely to history. This film shows us those stages of a young man’s life—perhaps not widely known, but certainly worth learning about. Those were the years when Washington carved out his own path through hard work, dedication, and a fervent passion for learning and self-education.

The film, starring British actor William Franklyn-Miller, shows us young George, who wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth or into a prominent family. It depicts how, at a young age, Washington lost his father and had to work even harder if he wanted to get ahead in life. I think it’s nice that they included a cameo of the story of Washington and his father’s tree.

George wasn’t born with the kind of money that could secure you a prominent position or open doors when you needed them; the young man had to carve out his own path. With his wit and resourcefulness, he had to fight against the system that rendered you invisible if your last name wasn’t well-known.

And perhaps that’s part of what makes this film so beautiful—it shows you that you don’t need money, influence, or someone to connect you to royalty; if you have ingenuity, work hard, and know how to navigate the system, you can change the course of history and ensure your name is remembered for many, many years, and that’s exactly what Washington did. He wanted to be a respected soldier; the young man knew that if he had a chance, he could prove what he was capable of. Even though he was young and didn’t have the respect of others, George believed in himself—and that was enough.

But even so, Washington’s path was not easy; he stumbled and failed in his early attempts, yet he didn’t let that define him—he didn’t let his failures determine his future. Fate led him to cross into territories disputed between the French and the British—lands where any mistake could cost you dearly; even the weather could take a heavy toll. Any small error or encounter with the wrong person could escalate a conflict between sides that were ready to take up arms.

And that’s exactly what happened to Washington: he found himself in a situation where a single mistake led the British and French to clash in a war, with Washington caught right in the middle—without any real military experience and without much actual support, where those in positions of authority didn’t care if a young man lost his life as long as it helped them climb the ranks.

And knowing how to take advantage of the opportunities he was given meant learning from the mistakes he made; it meant realizing that a leader isn’t someone who just gives orders, but someone who takes responsibility for their actions. George learned that a leader is someone who takes the reins in difficult times and guides the platoon—a leader is someone who leads by example. Washington is portrayed as a leader in the making—one who still has much to learn, sometimes the hard way—but who gives his all for his platoon; a leader who never gives up. Washington is the one who is still learning, who doesn’t know everything, but who is willing to give his all for his ideals and for justice.

I must say that Young Washington has intense moments filled with heroism; it features some truly spectacular battles. We see the heroism and drive of a young man who wasn’t born ready, but who was willing to learn, take responsibility, and embrace his role. Although we don’t see his time as president, this film shows us that great leader in the making.

If you like movies of this style, I’m sure you’ll enjoy Young Washington. Best regards.
