Dukhtar: A cry for freedom | Review | (ENG) (ESP)

This is perhaps the first Urdu language film that I've seen and therefore the first Pakistani film. Through cinema we can appreciate different landscapes, different cultures, making us understand much more the diversity and multiculturalism that exists in our world.

Dukthar is in a few words a film based on the oppression of women in conservative cultures, on the obligation as a woman and the little value that is given to this as a human right.

Alla Rakhi is a woman who decides to face this oppression because her 11-year-old daughter will soon be married to a man three times her age, a powerful man and tribal chief, unscrupulous and arrogant. The decision is made and the innocent girl eagerly awaits her wedding dress and wedding preparations without taking into account the possible adversities she might face next to a ruthless man.

His mother makes a hasty decision, to leave the town where they live and flee from another misfortune. She herself had married at the age of 15 and recalled the happiness and freedom she had before getting married: "After getting married, my story was over." Her husband wouldn't even let her see her mother.

Running through the mountains, mother and daughter embark on a frantic and desperate escape, the tribal chief had his honor tainted and soon a hunt against these women begins. At that precise moment, our next important character arrives: Sohail. A former paramilitary mujahideen comes across this pair of women hiding in his truck.

The story is not only about the incessant persecution that these women suffer but also about the courage, the courage of a mother determined not to see her daughter suffer. The voice of a woman who screams for freedom and for being happy in the face of an oppressive society. The social context is very important and is a clear criticism of the social system of the tribal peoples of Pakistan.

I have always been against the Indian caste system and forced marriages, where love is non-existent and supposedly learned but above all, I am against how primitive and degrading it is to possess a girl, as an object and without mercy.

The woman should never be taken as a possession, but as someone who walks beside us, never behind. Both men and women are human beings and we should have the same rights in a tacit way. Unfortunately, it is not a common thought in many parts of the world.

In Middle Eastern and Indian cinema I see that there are many voices exclaiming about this fact. The stories often show us oppressed women who seek to fight against an absurd system, a great movie that I can take as an example is Pink, where a group of girls was about to be raped and escape from their attackers. The Indian bureaucratic system almost allows the attackers to be released. Another example is Mom which I reviewed a few days ago.

All these stories tell us the reality of many women and in a way they are a protest against slavery. Freedom is not a luxury, it is something that should be intrinsic at birth, something that should not be discussed, an inalienable right.

Dukthar offers us a tense experience due to the constant flight of a mother and her daughter. It teaches us what a person is capable of when they gather enough courage and see that their life loses meaning when all their rights are annulled. A film that offers us beautiful landscapes and the nature of Pakistan, the country of Malala, a girl with more courage than many men wish we had and with a deserved Nobel Peace Prize for her fight in favor of education for girls.

In the most advanced societies of our time, women play an essential and equanimous role with respect to men, meaning the great contribution they make to society. In many societies the role of women is limited and all these films are in a certain way a protest towards change, a shift towards outdated customs that should become obsolete.

I was clapping in my mind after reading this... Yes, a lot of oppression women face; not just in the East but also in the West... but that's an conjecture to think about later on...

very interesting review... I liked the way you described the movie and the struggle they were facing... I have seen Pink and Mom right after their release... I wonder if you have seen Chandni Bar (though quite an old movie)
