It is a pleasure to greet you again, friends of the cinephile community par excellence, this weekend I rediscovered a film, which I had not seen for years but when I saw the first minutes, I identified it immediately; and the fact is that when a film leaves you with a teaching and good memories, they are never forgotten. I am referring to this work of art called "A Bronx Story", in which each character is relevant and has a magnificent sequential order. Robert De Niro's performance is truly remarkable, in the role of Lorenzo Anello, the responsible and cautious father of his son Calogero, who grows up under the tutelage of two opposite poles, on the one hand his father, an honest worker, and on the other, Sonny, the most respected mobster of the Italian neighborhood in New York in the 60's, who becomes attached to the boy and acts as a second father, giving him important advice, the most important of which is not to follow his example in the mafia. My God what a movie.

Gusto en saludarles nuevamente, amigos de la comunidad cinéfila por excelencia, este fin de semana me reencontré con un filme, que no veía hace años pero que al ver los primeros minutos, la identifiqué inmediatamente; y es que, cuando una película te deja una enseñanza y buenos recuerdos, jamás se olvidan. Me refiero a esta obra de sétimo arte llamada “Una historia del Bronx”, en la que cada personaje es relevante y que lleva un orden secuencial magnífico. Es en verdad destacable la actuación de Robert De Niro, en el papel de Lorenzo Anello, el padre responsable y cauto con su hijo Calogero, quien crece bajo la tutela de dos polos opuestos, por un lado su progenitor, un honesto trabajador y por el otro, Sonny, el mafioso más respetado del barrio italiano en la Nueva York de los años 60, quien se encariña con el muchacho y funge como un segundo padre, que le da importantes consejos, siendo el más importante, el que no siga su ejemplo en la mafia. Dios mío que película.
When I read the credits I noticed that the film is directed by De Niro himself, I didn't know that; but in fact what makes this film unforgettable, is the series of situations to which Calogero is exposed, who gets into trouble for hanging out with his friends (that's something that has happened to all of us at some time hahaha); but the great fortune of this boy, is that he has the advice of two people who appreciate him, his father and Sonny, each in their own way of course. I will never forget that memorable scene, in which Lorenzo goes to see Sonny to claim his negative influence on his son, because a father who loves his children, does not mind taking any risk to protect them and guide them on the right path. During the passing of the scenes, I saw again his wealth of good examples and famous phrases, like the one in which Calogero as a child argues with his father for having returned the money to Sonny: Calogero only 9 years old tells him, "Sonny is right, a worker is an exploited man"; to which his humble but wise father replies: "you don't need strength to pull a trigger, but you do need strength to get up every day to work; the worker is brave, your father is brave", that's called sowing values, especially in moments of discussion. And the boy continues: "but everyone loves him, like they love you on the bus (Lorenzo is a bus driver); and then his father sentences the master class: "people don't love him, they are afraid of him; there is a difference in that". And he closes with one of those words that the young Calogero also received from Sonny later on: you will understand when you grow up!
Cuando leí los créditos noté que la obra es dirigida por el mismo De Niro, eso no lo sabía; pero en realidad lo que hace de esta cinta algo inolvidable, es la serie de situaciones a las que se expone Calogero, quien se mete en problemas por andar son sus amigos (eso es algo que nos ha pasado a todos alguna vez jajaja); pero la gran fortuna de este chico, es que cuenta con los consejos de dos personas que lo aprecian, su padre y Sonny, cada quien a su manera claro está. Jamás olvidaré esa escena memorable, en la que Lorenzo va a ver a Sonny para reclamarle su influencia negativa en su hijo, porque a un padre que ama a sus hijos, no le importa correr el riesgo que sea para protegerlos y guiarlos por el camino de lo correcto. Durante el transcurrir de las escenas, volví a ver su riqueza de buenos ejemplos y frases célebres, como aquella en la que Calogero de niño discute con su padre por haberle devuelto el dinero a Sonny: Calogero de tan solo 9 años le dice, “Sonny tiene razón, un trabajador es un hombre explotado”; a lo que su humilde pero sabio padre le responde: “no se necesita fuerza para tirar de un gatillo, pero sí para levantarse todos los días a trabajar; el trabajador es valiente, tu padre es valiente”, eso se llama sembrar valores, sobre todo en momentos de discusión. Y prosigue el niño: “pero a él todos lo quieren, como te quieren a ti en el autobús (Lorenzo es chofer de autobús); y entonces su padre sentencia la clase magistral: “la gente no lo quiere, le teme; hay una diferencia en eso”. Y cierra con una aquellas palabras que el joven Calogero también recibió de Sonny posteriormente: ¡entenderás cuando crezcas!

This represents a priceless wealth. Strangely, I am impressed by how such a simple film can touch our conscience. Today, the dangers on the streets have grown unimaginable; and for me as a parent, it terrifies me to imagine my children alone and unprotected, facing the latent risk of violence, drugs and deception. However, the film is so complete that it even touches on the racism of those times, which still exists today (in smaller proportions, of course).
Es importante identificar el valor de los consejos de Lorenzo a su pequeño hijo, los cuales naturalmente fueron evolucionando durante el crecimiento de Calogero; y que luego se fueron complementando con los de su peculiar amigo, quien con sinceridad pero desde otra perspectiva, también le aconsejó ese tipo de enseñanzas, que se dan de hombre a hombre, tanto con el tema de las chicas, como el de las amistades. Esto representa una riqueza invaluable. Extrañamente, me impresiona cómo un filme tan sencillo nos puede llegar a la conciencia. Hoy en día, los peligros en las calles han crecido de manera inimaginable; y para mí como padre, me aterroriza el solo imaginar a mis hijos solos y desprotegidos, ante el riesgo latente de la violencia, las drogas y el engaño. Sin embargo, la cinta es tan completa, que incluso toca el tema del racismo de aquellos tiempos y que sigue existiendo aún (con menor proporción claro).
Finally, it leaves us another message about how short the life of mafiosi, or people who live in the world of illegal business, is; it is like a chain of events that reminds me of the saying "he who kills with iron, dies with iron"; Sonny is that character loved by some and hated by others, although he always felt appreciation for that boy who showed him loyalty at the first opportunity (something difficult to find). The final chapter leaves me with another lesson, about the importance of family unity and how vital it is to cultivate the values of honesty and love of work. Calogero had two great teachers in life and despite being seduced by the world of the Mafia, he always kept in mind the unfounded honesty of his father, who taught him not to lie and to value human beings regardless of their skin color. It is fascinating the narrative by the boy, who from his point of view (in first person) narrates and places the viewer in context. Today I want to recommend this film, which although simple and entertaining, gives us an invaluable learning experience. And on the occasion of De Niro's birthday (August 17), it is a pleasure to remember the cinema of the 90s.

Para finalizar, nos deja otro mensaje sobre lo corto que es la vida de los mafiosos, o de las personas que viven en el mundo de los negocios ilegales; es como una cadena de hechos que me recuerda el refrán que reza “el que ha hierro mata, a hierro muere”; Sonny es ese personaje querido por unos y odiado por otros, aunque siempre sintió aprecio por aquel niño que le demostró lealtad a la primera oportunidad (algo difícil de encontrar). El capítulo final me deja otra lección, sobre la importancia de la unión de la familia y lo vital que resulta cultivar los valores de honestidad y amor al trabajo. Calogero tuvo dos grandes maestros de vida y a pesar de ser seducido por el mundo de la mafia, siempre tuvo presente la honestidad infundada de su padre, esa que le enseñó a no mentir y a valorar al ser humano sin importar su color de piel. Es fascinante la narrativa por parte del chico, que desde su punto de vista (en primera persona) narra y ubica en contexto al espectador.
Hoy quiero recomendar este filme, que aunque sencillo y entretenido, nos regala un aprendizaje invaluable. Y con motivo del cumpleaños de De Niro (17 de agosto) es Grato recordar el cine de los años 90.
