One of my best movie memories of the late 90's has to do with this film by actor Mel Gibson, a guy who had us used to police action and explosive character in his characters. However, in this production directed by Brian Helgeland, I could observe a slight change in Gibson's interpretation, of a guy who combines maturity and great determination when it comes to claim what belongs to him, according to the agreements established with his "Friends"; and if at that moment Porter could not sense their betrayal, he would later assume a radical change.

Uno de mis mejores recuerdos peliculescos de finales de los 90, tiene que ver con esta cinta del actor Mel Gibson, un tipo que nos tenía acostumbrados a la acción policíaca y al carácter explosivo en sus personajes. No obstante, en esta producción dirigida por Brian Helgeland, pude observar un ligero cambio en la interpretación de Gibson, de un tipo que combina madurez y gran determinación a la hora de reclamar lo que le pertenece, según los acuerdos establecidos con sus “Amigos”; y si en ese momento Porter no pudo intuir la traición de éstos, luego asumiría un cambio radical.

Now, the good memories that came to my head, are the times I enjoyed this film with my brothers, sitting at home on a marathon movie Sunday, that was movie after movie, we just waited for the commercials to make the break hahaha. Undoubtedly this is one of the roles I remember the most, of the then sane Mel.
Mientras miraba de nuevo este clásico olvidado, recordé un viejo dicho que reza “ladrón que roba ladrón, tiene cien años de perdón”, sin embargo el buen Porter no piensa igual y actuará en consecuencia, para hacer valer la palabra que una vez sus cómplices rompieron. Ahora bien, los buenos recuerdos que vinieron a mi cabeza, son las veces que disfruté con mis hermanos de este film, sentados en casa un domingo de cine maratónico, eso era película tras película, solo esperábamos los comerciales para hacer el break jajaja. Sin duda este es uno de los papeles que más recuerdo, del entonces cuerdo Mel.
There are moments in the life of a person, in which he thinks he has everything, a beautiful wife, good "work" partners and a profitable activity; but nothing is forever and the good things usually leave our lives faster; but there are also times when some people have that kind of second chance. That happens with people who have hit rock bottom and then come back with more strength, the strength they needed to turn problems into opportunities. These details that I mention are touched upon in the course of the film, which leaves us with few moments without some action.
Hay momentos en la vida de una persona, en la que cree tenerlo todo, una bella esposa, buenos compañeros de “trabajo” y una actividad rentable; pero nada es para siempre y lo bueno suele irse más rápido de nuestras vidas; pero también hay ocasiones en las que algunos tienen esa especie de segunda oportunidad. Eso pasa con las personas que han tocado fondo y luego regresan con mayor fortaleza, esa que necesitaron para convertir los problemas en oportunidades. Estos detalles que les menciono, son tocados en el transcurrir de la cinta y que nos deja pocos momentos sin algo de acción.
There are times when we concentrate so much when watching a film, that we end up hooked; that's when we realize that, we get to identify a lot with the characters and the situations that happen. At home we even used to give our opinion about the decisions of the main characters, if they should do this or that, or if they had been too innocent hahaha; that really means that the director did his job, entertaining and making us live a good experience with the film. After many years without seeing it, I saw new things or things I didn't remember, capturing my attention even more.
Hay ocasiones en las que nos concentramos tanto al ver un film, que terminamos enganchados; en entonces cuando caemos en cuenta que, llegamos a identificarnos mucho con los personajes y las situaciones que suceden. En casa solíamos opinar incluso, sobre las decisiones de los protagonistas, que si debía hacer tal o cual cosa, o su había sido muy inocente jajaja; eso realmente significa que el director cumplió con su cometido, entreteniendo y haciendo vivir una buena experiencia con la cinta. Luego de bastantes años sin verla, vi cosas nuevas o que no recordaba, captando aún más mi atención.
The critical situations of "Payback" show us how a man can survive, not only the blows and bullets he received, but also the multiple betrayals to which he was subjected. When he got up from such a heavy fall, he did so with a new motivation, which he hid behind his claim for his share of the money he was entitled to. I certainly enjoyed it when one by one his executioners fell, although it was not at all easy because it was a criminal organization. When they found out that Porter had returned for his money, they did not imagine that he had changed, he was no longer the same guy they had fooled before.
Las situaciones críticas de “Payback” o Revancha (titulada en español), nos muestran cómo puede sobrevivir un hombre, no solo a los golpes y balas que recibió, sino a la múltiple traición de la que fue objeto. Al levantarse de tan fuerte caída, lo hizo con una nueva motivación, que escondía detrás de su reclamo por la parte del dinero que le correspondía. Ciertamente disfruté cuando uno a uno caían sus verdugos, aunque no fue nada fácil porque se trataba de una organización criminal. Cuando se enteraron que Porter había regresado por su dinero, no imaginaron que había cambiado, ya no era el mismo tipo al que engañaron antes.

It was not strange to see Porter, like many characters played by the protagonist, going through beatings and suffering to achieve his goal. However, one of the things that makes him a little different is that his pulse does not tremble at the moment of truth, at the moment of acting to go from step to step, until he gets what was taken from him. And of course, it could not miss that relationship between cops, politics and mafia; which in my opinion, is rightly addressed. The main character being serene and determined, leaves no doubt that he is willing to do anything, for his money and for the opportunity to have a reason to move forward.
No fue extraño ver a Porter, como muchos personajes interpretados por el protagonista pasando por golpizas y sufrimiento, para lograr su objetivo. No obstante, una de las cosas que le hace un poco diferente, es que no le tiembla el pulso a la hora de la verdad, al momento de actuar para ir de escalón en escalón, hasta conseguir lo que le quitaron. Y por supuesto, no podía faltar esa relación policías, política y mafia; la que es abordada acertadamente, en mi opinión. El personaje principal siendo sereno y decidido, no deja lugar a dudas de estar dispuesto a todo, por su dinero y por la oportunidad de tener un motivo para seguir adelante.

An entertaining film with implausible situations, reminiscent of a film of the nineties, a single man has done justice in his own way, with suffering but winning his revenge in the end.

El elenco que acompaña a Gibson hace un gran trabajo, colocando al espectador en una situación privilegiada, tipos malos y mujeres bellas, logran la mezcla perfecta en esta producción, que aunque se le relaciona con un tema bastante común, va más allá de una simple revancha; de hecho, hay escenas muy buenas que le dejan su marca personal y los temas musicales que se dejan sonar en algunas escenas, son clásicos muy bien seleccionados. Una película entretenida con situaciones inverosímiles, que hacen recordar un cine de la década de los noventa, un solo hombre ha hecho justicia a su modo, con sufrimiento pero ganando su revancha al final.
