An element that tends to be quite frequent in most Slice Of Life anime are the chapters of visits to the aquarium, huge buildings with fantastic scenes and places which having nothing like it in my city I always like these chapters, Shiroi Suna no Aquatope is an anime that precisely takes place in an aquarium and explores even more everything related to this lifestyle in an artistically beautiful way, with a very interesting story and with dramatic and joyful elements at the same time, besides being that kind of anime that in a subtle way explains real elements as in this case will be the marine life of the aquarium.
The whole story begins with Fuuka Miyazawa who is a typical girl in search of the dream of being an Idol but due to the difficulty of this life and the pressures it caused her decides to run away from everything on a train leaving her life behind, arriving to a small coastal town where she will discover the Gama Gama aquarium and meet Kukuru Misakino the granddaughter of the owner who is passionate about marine life and dreams of keeping her grandfather's aquarium and take it back to the golden years when it was visited en masse by all the people.
Fuuka gets in the life of the aquarium an illusion of tranquility and passion that she felt she was missing in her life, for this reason she decides to ask Kukuru to let her work at the aquarium and even ends up staying with her in the house of her grandparents who due to their advanced age are no longer able to meet the obligations involved in maintaining the aquarium all the time, thus begins the new stage in Fuuka's life after fleeing from her previous life as an Idol.
Fuuka's personality and story is an aspect that can make many feel a certain connection with the character as they see how she goes through situations where she was simply completely lost in her current life and decided to drastically leave everything behind in search of a new place and lifestyle where she feels like she is really doing something she is passionate about despite having to start practically from scratch, She also has a shy personality with little self-confidence, but despite the mistakes she makes at the beginning she decides to continue trying to adapt to life in the aquarium and learn everything she can about the animals that now have caught her attention.
Another interesting aspect is how the story knows how to show and narrate in a pleasant way aspects of marine life and its nature making it not boring at all, instead it generates some emotion and taste for these topics, achieving a similar result to what Dr. Stone does but with marine life. In the same way it presents us the stories of the different characters and how all of them in a certain way also have their different problems or obligations, but the love they feel for the aquarium and the friendship with Kukuru makes them achieve their goal of managing the aquarium only a group of young people.
Little by little it is shown more of Fuuka's past and how in a certain way her doubts and insecurities were not only about her life trying to be an Idol, there are also certain aspects about her mother that results in her motivation to try this new goal in her life. One aspect that is always striking in these Slife Of Life of small towns in anime, is the great kindness that we can appreciate, as a girl completely unknown to everyone arrives without any goal or direction and easily everyone offers her help in everything she may need.
The adventures of life in the aquarium are very entertaining and all the characters have a very interesting development, but undoubtedly the most outstanding and captivating aspect of this anime is its animation and scenes related to the sea or the aquarium, the details and shots that we can appreciate are simply beautiful and the moments where it seeks to highlight some feeling or emotion is used in a great way the fact of having an aquarium with lights in the background to create aquatic landscapes that in turn seem space to show so much brightness and detail, creates in a very pleasant way a soothing feeling in the viewer and accompanies it in a good way with the story and its somewhat dramatic elements in its development. All of this is fully exploited in its Ending, which features an underwater design and a very soothing and slow music.
