A funny thing happened when I started watching this movie, and that was that I put it on with my dad. And if there's one thing you don't want to do with your parents, it's watching movies that make you uncomfortable when they're around. I put it on because I saw it was a Western, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, I said nothing could go wrong until I saw Peter, Kirsten's son, delicate, hanging on every detail and gay, here I knew it was going to be a movie I would be uncomfortable watching with my dad, I got my courage up and kept watching.

Before I start talking about the movie I would like to clarify something, because some may not know that it is a WESTERN. The western, as the name is written, is a movie based in the American Midwest, as simple as that. From the beginning of the movie industry, Westerns were those movies that everyone went to the movies to see, it was the marvel universe of the time, the most exciting thing out there. There was action, speed, and lots of shooting (although I think it would be closer to Fast and Furious, for that matter), especially in the 40s and 60s. But in the case of Westerns, it was more focused on Cowboys, Sheriffs, crooks, Indians, and horse racing, as well as the desert.

I don't remember anything about those Sunday morning movies I used to watch with my dad, because they were all practically the same, crooks who robbed a wagon train, they went in search of the crooks, some Indians intercepted them, and in the end, it was like that... so Westerns were not among my favorite movies... Until one came along that changed my life: Brokeback Mountain, I know everyone remembers it, everyone knows what they were doing when they saw it for the first time as well as remembering the tent scene, this was one of the most wonderful movies I have ever seen and yes, it is a Western, it is in the West, it has cattle, horses, cowboys, and a hostile environment for anyone who is not a male, there was a before and after this movie of two cowboys in love. Then I saw another cowboy movie, this one is one of the purest Westerns but with a different approach, a more humanistic one despite the violence I did a review of it, one of my first reviews back in my beginnings. The movie is Hostiles, with Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, you can take advantage of the link and see how my reviews were in my beginnings 4 years ago, nothing like the ones I do now.

Sucedió una cosa muy graciosa cuando empecé a ver esta película, y fue que la puse con mi papá. Y si hay algo que no quieres hacer con tus padres es ver películas que te pongan incómoda cuando están ellos. La puse porque ví que era un Western, de Bennedict Cumberbatch y Kirsten Dunst, dije que nada podía salir mal, hasta que vi a Peter, el hijo de Kirsten, delicado, pendiente de cada detalle y claramente gay, aquí sabía que iba a ser una película que me incomodaría ver con mi papá, me llené de valor y seguí viendo.

Antes de empezar a hablar de la película me gustaría aclarar algo, porque tal vez algunos no sepan que es un WESTERN. El western, tal cual está escrito el nombre es una película basada en el medio oeste norteamericano, tan simple como esto. Desde los inicios de la industria cinematográfica, los Western fueron esas películas a las que todo el mundo acudía a ver al cine, era el universo marvel de la época, lo más emocionante que existía. Había acción, velocidad, y muchos disparos (aunque creo que se acercaría más a Rápido y furiosos, si al caso vamos), sobretodo en la época de los 40-60. Pero en el caso de los Western estaba más enfocados en los Vaqueros, Sheriff, maleantes, indios, y carreras en caballos, además del desierto.

Realmente de esas películas de domingo en la mañana que veía con mi papá no recuerdo nada, porque todas eran práctimanete lo mismo, maleantes que robaban una caravana, iban en busca de los maleantes, unos indios los intercepataban, y al final era así. por lo que los Western no entraban dentro de mi películas favoritas... Hasta que llegó una que cambió mi vida: Brokeback Mountain, sé que todos la recuerdan, todos saben que estaban haciendo cuando la vieron por primera vez así como también recuerdan la escena de la carpa, esta ha sido una de las películas más maravillosas que he visto y sí, es un Western, es en el Oeste, tiene ganado, caballos, vaqueros, y un ambiente hostil para el que no sea un macho, hubo un antes y un después de esta película de dos vaqueros enamorados. Luego vi otra de vaqueros, esta si es un Western de los más puros pero con otro enfoque, uno más humanista a pesar de la violencia, de hecho le hice una reseña, una de mis primeras reseñas por allá por mis inicios. La película es Hostiles, con Christian Bale y Rosamund Pike, pueden aprovechar de entrar al link y ver como eran mis reseñas en mis inicios hace 4 años, nada iguales a las que hago ahora.

I make this introduction because my father, being born in '53, grew up watching these movies, just as I grew up watching Robocop, Terminator, and Mad Max (if we are talking about the action movies that were on TV during my childhood). So whenever he could, my dad would end up putting on a Western and he would always have my brothers and I watch cowboy movies, and when the shooting part started he would always say: "In my past life I was the fastest gunfighter in the West", then there would be an eye roll from us and he would die laughing. That being said, I wanted to give it a chance and see a western with excellent actors, I knew I would not be disappointed and this was the reason I went on a rampage and without seeing the trailer first to put this Netflix movie on.

Hago esta introduccíón porque mi padre, al haber nacido en el año 53, creció vienda estas películas, así como yo crecí viendo Robocop, Terminator y Mad Max (si hablamos de las películas de acción que repetían el la tv durante mi niñez). Así que siempre que podía, mi papá terminaba poniendo un Western y siempre nos ponía mis hermanos y a mí a ver peliculas de vaqueros, y cuando empezaba la parte de los disparos siempre decía: "En mi vida pasada yo fui el pistolero más rápido del Oeste", seguidamente había una volteada de ojos de parte de nosotros y el se moría a carcajadas. Dicho esto, quise darle una oportunidad y ver un western con excelentes actores, sabía que no me iba a decepcionar y esta fue la razón por la que me fui desbocada y sin ver el trailer primero a poner esta película de Netlix.

THE POWER OF THE DOG

Phil and George Burbank are two very wealthy ranchers, brothers, from a very wealthy family. George is the refined brother, well-dressed, dressed to the nines all day, and very polite. Phil is the uncouth brother, who doesn't mind herding cattle without gloves, hates to bathe, and is the typical cowboy image you would see in a Marlboro commercial, as well as the whole entourage of cowboys who were the laborers on their big farm. George decides to marry a widow from the town who has a son, Peter, clearly more fragile than anyone who lived in that hostile environment. Peter used to make paper flowers to decorate the table at the inn his mother set up in their home, he loved nature and studying everything around him.

Phil y George Burbank son dos ganaderos muy ricos, hermanos, provenientes de una familia muy acaudalada. George es el hermano refinado, bien vestido, de punta en blanco todo el día y muy amable. Phil es el hermano tosco, al que no le importa capar al ganado sin guantes, odia bañarse y es la tipica imagen de vaquero que veríamos en un comercial de Marlboro, así como todo el séquito de vaqueros que hacían de obreros de su gran granja. george decide casarse con una viuda del pueblo que tiene un hijo, Peter, claramente más frágil que cualquiera que viviera en ese entorno hostil. Peter acostumbraba a hacer flores de papel para adornar la mesa de la posada que su madre instaló en su casa, le gustaba la naturaleza y estudiar todo lo que lo rodeaba.

Honestly, since the beginning of the movie I didn't know how it was going to end, I didn't even know what could happen, and although at the beginning I felt it a little slow, that cinematography of the movie killed me, all the cinematography is incredible, a work of art, so I was just gawking watching the landscapes that they had decided to use to shoot the movie. If there is something that was growing from the beginning of the movie was the tension, at the beginning it was imperceptible but it was increasing in crescendo, I couldn't stop watching it. I no longer cared that my dad was watching as a clear homophobe as Phil was, he made Rose's life miserable with his mere presence and drove her to near insanity. Or of how he treated Phil on their first meeting when he burned her paper flower.

When we think of Western, we go to everything I named above, and if we place ourselves in this movie it has all the elements, Montana, cowboys and cattle, mesquite pants, boots, hats, desert scenery, but we are not going to see more of that, we go through a family situation, Rose's adjustment to a family that does not love her, her husband idolizes her, but in the end, many of us know that this is not all. The husband kindly presses her to play the piano and there's Phil, who by mere presence playing the banjo in a corner makes her see how terrible she is, and not in a nice way. It's terrible to live in a house where you don't have a moment's peace, not even when you're with your son. And your son only cares about one thing: taking care of his mother.

Sinceramente, desde que empezó la película no sabía de que manera iba a terminar, ni siquiera sabía que podía pasar, y aunque al principio la sentí un poco lenta, esa fotografía de la película me mató, toda la cinematografía es increíble, una obra de arte, así que me quedaba embobada viendo los paisajes que habían decidido usar para grabar la película. Si hay algo que fue en crecimiento desde el principio de la película fue la tensión, al principio era imperceptible pero iba aumentando en crescendo, no podía dejar de verla. Ya no me importaba que mi papá estuviera viendo como un claro homofóbico como lo era Phil, le hacía la vida imposible a Rose con su simple presencia y la llevó a casi un estado de locura. O de como trató a Phil en su primer encuentro cuando le quemó la flor de papel.

Cuando pensamos en el Western, nos vamos a todo lo que nombré anteriormente, y si nos situamos en esta película tiene todos los elementos, Montana, vaqueros y ganado, pantalones de mezquilla, botas, sombreros, parajes desérticos, pero no vamos a ver más de eso, pasamos por una situación familiar, la adaptación de Rose a una familia que no la quiere, su esposo la idolatra, pero al final muchos sabemos que esto no es todo. El esposo amablemente la presiona para que toque el piano y ahí está Phil, que con mera presencia tocando un banjo en un rincón le hace ver lo terrible eque es ella, y no de una manera amable. Es terrible vivir en una casa en la que no tienes ni un momento de paz, ni siquiera al estar con tu hijo. Y a su hijo solo le importa una cosa: cuidar a su madre.

Phil is a despicable, horrendous, hateful, unbearable character, every time he appeared he filled me with tension and it was not possible to be otherwise, and it is that he is a basic man with a hidden secret that acts as he acts because of that secret. This character is so masterfully played by the wonderful Benedict Cumberbatch who we know from Code Enigma and Dr. Strange (because he has to be named), gives one of the most exquisite performances of his career and will probably lead to his second Oscar nomination. I know I have said that he has portrayed a homophobic macho man, but his character goes through so many nuances that make him worthy of the nomination, this clearly can happen because he was already nominated for the Golden Globes Awards for Best Dramatic Actor, but the award went to Will Smith for King Richard.

Phil es un personaje despreciable, horrendo, odioso, insoportable, cada vez que aparecia me llenaba de tensión y es que no era posible ser de otra manera, y es que es un básico hombre con un secreto oculto que actúa como actúa por ese secreto. Este personaje tan magistralemnte encarnado por el maravilloso Benedict Cumberbatch a quien conocemos de Código Enigma y de Dr. Strange (porque hay que nombrarlo), hace una de las actuaciones más exquisitas de su carrera y que probablemente lo lleve a su segunda nominación a los premios Oscars. Se que he dicho que ha representado a un machista homofóbico, pero su personaje atraviesa tantos matices que lo hacen merecedor de la nominación, esto claramente puede pasar porque ya fue nominado a los Premios Golden Globes como mejor actor dramático, pero el premio se lo llevó Will Smith por King Richard.

Two performances are also worthy of mention: that of Kirsten Dunst as a woman unhinged by the mere presence of her brother-in-law. I had years without seeing Kirsten, she was one of my favorites during my childhood and adolescence because we saw her in movies like Interview with the Vampire, Jumanji, Bring It, and Mary Jane in Spiderman, I had stopped following her career. Then she appears in a masterful performance from a child actress who was not defeated by the clutches of Hollywood and was even nominated for the Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actress for this performance and I also believe she can be nominated for the rest of the awards coming up including the Oscar.

Hay dos actuaciones que también son merecedoras de mención: la de Kirsten Dunst como una mujer totalmente trastornada por la simple presencia de su cuñado. tenía años sin ver a Kirsten, fue una de mis favoritas durante mi niñez y adolescencia, porque la vimos en películas como Entrevista con el vampiro, Jumanji, Bring It y como Mary Jane en Spiderman, yo había dejado de seguir su carrera. Entonces aparece en una actuación magistral de una actriz infantil que no fue vencida por las garras de Hollywood e incluso fue nominada a los Golden Globes como mejor actriz secundaria por esta actuación y también creo que pueda ser nominada al resto de premiaciones que está por venir incluyendo el Oscar.

The second mention goes to Kodi Smith-McPhee. I didn't know him, it was for me the first time I saw him and he captivated me, he seemed like a simple character in the movie but he is the center, a gay man living next to a homophobe? Of course, I was going to be in absolute tension during the movie, I was just thinking what is he going to do to him? And I had double tension because I was watching the movie with my dad, don't forget about that. I've been talking about nuance, but even though this character didn't change, I knew there was something about him, something that didn't make him look so innocent. And he showed that with doses of brilliant and restrained (with the good use of the word) acting. He already won his well-deserved Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and I believe he will win the Oscar.

La segunda mención es para Kodi Smith-McPhee. No lo conocía, era para mí la primera vez que lo veía y me cautivó, parecía un simple ersonaje de la película pero es el centro, ¿un gay viviendo cerca de un homofóbico? Por supuesto que iba a estar con una tensión absoluta durante la película, solo pensaba ¿Qué le va a hacer? Y tenía doble tensión porque estaba viendo la película con mi papá, no se oviden de eso. He estado hablando de matices, pero aunque este personaje no cambiaba, sabía que había algo en él, algo que no lo hacía ver tan inocente. Y eso lo demostraba con dosis de brillante y comedida (con el buen uso de la palabra) actuación. Ya se ganó su merecido Golden Globe como mejor actor de reparto y creo absolutamente que se ganará el Oscar.

Now let's talk about the heavy stuff, what I love, what happens when a woman gets her hand in directing. Well, we know that the world of film directing and production for many years has been dominated by men, but in recent years there has been more growth in productions created, directed, and/or starring women and this is a clear case in point. Jane Campion has adapted and directed this film based on the novel by Thomas Savage, and she is no newcomer to the world of film, she has already won an Oscar for writing: The Piano, the film for which we met Anna Paquin, who also won an Oscar for this film as a very young girl.

This film is a clear choice to score a few nominations, among them some technical ones like photography, costumes and surely the soundtrack, because the music during the film is a work of art that blends with the sensuality of the images that we were shown. It is also likely to win a few Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, probably Best Cinematography, and, as I said, Best Supporting Actor. Unfortunately, and although I love him madly, Benedict will not win the award, he has two previous winners before him: Will Smith and Andrew Garfield, and after Andrew won the Golden Globe for best actor in a musical, it was clearer to me that the Oscar will be for him, it can't be for Will Smith, if this happens, we will know why and I will not be very comfortable with that decision. We'll see.

Hablemos ahora de lo pesado, de lo que me encanta, de lo que pasa cuando una mujer mete la mano en la dirección. Bien sabemos que el mundo de la dirección y producción de cine durante muchos años ha sido dominado por los hombres, pero en los últimos años ha habido más crecimiento en producciones creadas, dirigidas y/o protagonizadas por mujeres y este es un claro caso. Jane Campion ha adaptado y dirigido esta película basada en la novela de Thomas Savage, y no es una novata en el mundo del cine, ya ha ganado un oscar por escribir: The Piano, la película por la que conocimos a Anna Paquin, que también se ganó un Oscar por esta película siendo muy niña.

Esta película es una clara opción para anotarse unas cuantas nominaciones, entre ellas algunas técnicas como la fotografía, vestuario y seguramente la banda sonora, porque la música durante la película es una obra de arte que se mezcla con la sensualidad de las imágenes que nos mostraban. También hay probabilidades de llevarse unos cuantos Oscars, incluyendo mejor película y mejor dirección, probablemente se lleve la de mejor fotografía y como ya les dije, mejor actor secundario. Lamentablemente, y aunque lo ame con locura, Bennedict no se llevará el premio, tiene de precedente dos ganadores antes que él: Will Smith y Andrew Garfield, y después de que Andrew se ganara el Golden Globe por mejor actor en un musical, me quedó más claro que el Oscar será para él, no puede ser para Will Smith, si esto pasa, ya sabremos por qué será y no voy a estar muy cómoda con esa decisión. Ya veremos.

In the end, the movie is something out of this world, not suitable for those who like horses running and lots of shooting, it's not Western-like the ones we are used to and the ending is something that blew me away. Best of all, my dad said it wasn't a movie for everyone, I mean, he loved it. good for me. I wouldn't know if I recommend it or not, because since it's not such a fast-paced movie and more than a Western it's an intense drama, I know it's not for everyone, but if you're a drama lover, give it a chance, you'll be left with your mouth open and going back in your mind to understand what happened.

Al final, la pelicula es una cosa de otro mundo, no apta para los que quieren caballos corriendo y muchos disparos, no es un Western como los que estamos acostumbrados y el final es una cosa que me dejó anonadada. Lo mejor de todo es que mi papá dijo que no era una película para cualquiera, es decir, le encantó. Bien por mí. No sabría decir si la recomiendo o no, porque al no ser una película tan movida y que más que un Western es un drama intenso, sé que no es para todo el mundo, pero si eres un amante del drama, dale la oportunidad, quedarás con la boca abierta y retrociendo en tu mente para entender que pasó.
