Annihilation Short Movie Review

Annihilation is a brilliant and surprising film of sci-fi of the director of Ex Machina and based on the novel of Jeff VanderMeer. It has several spooky, frightening and/or disturbing scenes, as well as blood scenes, monsters' attacks, guns and gunshots, and death. It shows a woman having an affair; Sex is implicit through moans and movements (there is no graphic nudity, and the two participants are not shown on the screen at the same time). There is also a scene of a married couple in bed in underwear, comfortable and kissing.

The language is strong, with several uses of "f--k" and "s--t". It's weird, but good! see this type of films that present mainly women (Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Estrella de Tessa Thompson). Annihilation has a spirit closer to films like Stalker and 2001: A Space Odyssey, than Star Wars or superhero movies, so it might not be for everyone.

The film is directed by Alex Garland, a well-known British writer and screenwriter who debuted as a director with this title. His literary career began with "The Beach", which was published in 1996 and which was based on his experience as a backpacker. The novel quickly became a cult classic and was taken to the movies by Danny Boyle, who released it with the same title: The Beach (2000). Three years later, Boyle, asked him to write the screenplay 28 days later (2002), a zombie film that became a great international success, received numerous awards and catapulted its protagonist, Cillian Murphy, to stardom. With Danny Boyle he went back to work writing the screenplay for his next film Sunshine (2007), an intrigue and science fiction drama centered on a group of astronauts who must carry an explosive charge to a sick Sun about to go out in order to reactivate it. Garland was also responsible for writing the screenplay for the award-winning romantic science fiction drama Never Let Me Go (2010), starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. He also wrote the screenplay for the remake Dredd (2012), an action and science fiction film that was moderately successful at the box office. Two years later he wrote and directed Ex_Machina (2015), a science fiction thriller starring Alicia Vikander that received a lot of national and international awards, including an Oscar for the best special effects.

SYNOPSIS

| - | It has been more than 30 years since a mysterious event took place in an area that is now known as "Area X", a remote and hidden place in the US that will send a group of women to unravel its secrets. An anthropologist, a topographer, a psychologist and a biologist form the twelfth expedition sent by the state agency Southern Reach. All previous expeditions have died there. The second for a collective suicide, the third for a shooting while the last for cancer. Now they will investigate the region by completing a map of the area, cataloging the flora and fauna, as well as documenting their observations in a newspaper. The secrets of the women among themselves could complicate the expedition.
