Her is a 2013 science-fiction romantic drama written and directed by Spike Jonze. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, a lonely man who works by writing personal letters for other people. His life starts to change when he gets a new operating system with an AI named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. What starts as a simple friendship slowly becomes something much deeper.
My Take
I heard about Her from a close friend when Ryan Reynolds Free Guy was released, as my friend was trying to compare. The idea of a man falling in love with an operating system sounded strange at first, but the movie handled the idea in such a natural way that I quickly stopped thinking about how unusual the concept was.
What I liked most was that the movie did not make its future world too complicated. There were advanced technologies everywhere, but people were still dealing with very normal things like loneliness, relationships, breakups, and the need to feel understood. That made the movie feel surprisingly close to real life.
Joaquin Phoenix was excellent as Theodore. His performance was mostly quiet, but I could still understand what was going on inside his character. There were many small moments where his face and voice showed his feelings without needing a big emotional scene.
Scarlett Johansson also did a great job as Samantha. She only had her voice, but she gave Samantha so much personality that it was easy to believe she was a real character. Their conversations were one of my favorite parts because they felt natural instead of sounding like conversations between a person and a computer.
Oh, and I needed a lot of time to understand it was Scarlett, not because I didn't recognize the voice but because I was so into the story that I didn't feel like focusing on who it could be.
I also liked the look of the movie. The warm colors, futuristic buildings, and simple technology created a different kind of future. It did not feel too far away from our own world, which made the whole concept even more interesting.
Outstanding Performance
The biggest strength of Her was the chemistry between Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Most of their relationship was built through conversations, yet those conversations rarely felt boring. They joked, talked about personal things, disagreed, and slowly became comfortable with each other.
Joaquin Phoenix made Theodore's loneliness very believable. Even when he was around other people, there was always a feeling that he was looking for a connection. His expressions and body language did a lot of the work.
Scarlett Johansson's voice performance was equally impressive. Samantha sounded playful, curious, and emotional, and her voice changed naturally depending on the situation. Considering that she was never physically shown, making the audience feel connected to her character was not an easy job.
Amy Adams was also very good as Amy. Her friendship with Theodore felt natural and gave the movie another human relationship to focus on. Her scenes added a nice balance to Theodore's unusual relationship with Samantha.
The movie also raised some interesting questions about relationships and technology. Can someone truly feel connected to an AI? Does physical presence really decide whether a relationship is real? Her did not try to give simple answers, and I liked that about it.

Paul was played by Chris Pratt.
Paul was Theodore's co-worker and a friendly person who seemed interested in Theodore's unusual relationship with Samantha. He also brought some lighter moments to the movie.
Isabella was played by Portia Doubleday.
Isabella became involved when Theodore tried to explore a more physical side of his relationship with Samantha. Her involvement showed one of the limitations of Theodore's relationship with an AI and created an uncomfortable situation for everyone involved.
Conclusion
Her was much more than a movie about a man falling in love with an AI. What I liked most was how it used this unusual idea to talk about loneliness, love, relationships, and the way people change over time. The movie was emotional without constantly trying to make the audience cry, and its futuristic setting never distracted from the human side of the story.
Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson were the biggest reasons the relationship worked so well for me. If you enjoy movies that make you think about love and technology while still giving you a very personal story, Her is definitely worth watching.
