"They didn't forget, to Peppino!"
These are the words of a mother on the day she sees a long procession of people accompanying the remains of her son. How could attention have been given to a young journalist against the tide who had had the courage to oppose the silent evil that is the Mafia, who died under strange circumstances, when on that same day the lifeless body of Aldo Moro, the president of the Christian Democrats who had been kidnapped by the Red Brigades, was found inside a red Renault 4?
And instead, the funeral of Peppino Impastato in Cinisi, Sicily, is attended by about 1,000 people mostly from Palermo and neighboring towns.
"The Hundred Steps" is the title of this film; it refers to the hundred steps that divide the house of Gaetano Badalamenti, a notorious Mafia boss, from that of Peppino Impastato. This young journalist wiped out by the Mafia because he dared to "disrespect"!
I am not going to offer a real review of the film, I would rather like to offer some food for thought about what Peppino Impastato's life was like: a young man who, although also born into a Mafia family and living in a climate of strong omertà, is one of the first to have the courage to openly denounce the Mafia, knowing full well what he would be up against.
Here, I ask myself: what is it that drives people like Impastato to fight against an omertous system of honor and respect toward the Mafia, knowing that the inevitable consequence is death?
If he had wanted to, he could have easily become a boss and without any obstacles; it was his legacy, after all.
What was it that made his heart and soul light up with this immeasurable foza to go against the reality around him that would keep him "safe" and protected?
Here, this is the question I asked myself: why do they do it? Where does this strong sense of justice and this desire to fight against abuse come from? Impastato, Falcone, Borsellino and so many others knew that the risk of opposing them would be death but they continued to fight that war.
In conclusion, this film is the story of a life, of a denunciation that inspires all of us, even if only in our hearts, to be as brave and fearless as Peppino Impastato
ITALIANO
