Life at the Kamiya Dōjō
After the incident at the Kamiya Dōjō, Kenshin begins living there alongside Kaoru, who desperately tries to bring back her former students. Despite her efforts, none of them return, leaving her discouraged. One day, as Kaoru shops with Kenshin in Tokyo, they encounter a carriage carrying Yamagata Aritomo, who politely asks for directions to the police station. Kaoru helps him, but when she turns around, she finds Kenshin surrounded by police.
The Sword Abolishment Edict
The police accuse Kenshin of breaking the Meiji Government’s law against carrying swords. Tension escalates as a special police unit, authorized to bear swords, arrives and threatens Kenshin, Kaoru, and the civilians nearby. Forced to defend himself and those around him, Kenshin draws his reversed-blade sword, revealing that even as a wanderer, he will not stand idly by when violence unfolds.
A Choice of Paths
As the skirmish ends, Yamagata witnesses Kenshin defeat the armed police, including their leader Ujiki. Impressed by his skills, Yamagata urges Kenshin to rejoin the Ishin Shishi. However, Kenshin refuses, declaring that his sword now exists only to protect, not to kill. His words cement his role as a protector in the new era, walking a path very different from his bloody past.
Final Thoughts
This act highlights Kenshin’s unshakable resolve: although he is constantly pressured to return to his old life, he chooses instead to live by his vow, wielding his blade only to shield others. It’s a powerful reminder that strength can serve peace, not just war.
