In the early stages of this film we have a girl broken, torn, lost as a result of everything the Rebellion was and is. She doesn't care. This is not her war. She's "out."

The only thing she has been motivated by so far is survival and hope of reconnection with her father.

The midpoint brings much change.

Jyn connects with her father, and immediately they are separated. He is left for dead. You can see the pain in her eyes. She is threaded into the war with fresh wounds, fresh motivation.

From here we run, the truth comes out amongst the team, a division that leads to union.

We have a lead character who is for the first time fully engaged. This is her fight again. She is in.

New goal. New character. New hope. No return.

Her and Cassian walking to and boarding their ship shortly after is a moment for the audience to breathe all this in, to recalibrate and celebrate for a moment before our next danger. We also see a new glimmer of love in these moments. Between our two lead characters.

I should probably see it again, and reassess it, as when I saw this in the cinema, I felt the characters were underdeveloped, the plot recycled, the adventure, fun and magic of the original Star Wars gone.

But all my friends love this film, so maybe it was just that my expectations were too high.

I will give it another chance. :)

Fantastic Star Wars movie. What a great and detailed plot too, a necessary one to say the least. The characters made their impact immediately when they were shown on screen. I also like the idea of them not surviving and making it a sacrifice mission, something we have never really seen. Also how about that ending?? One of the best endings of any movie ever I think. Turned the most bad ass villain into even more of a badass, leading directly up to a new hope.
