I have a confession: I don't like Quintin Tarantino films. This isn't really about the director, but moreso a preference to avoid particularly violent films - which, quite fairly, is my association with this director.
A number of years ago (gosh, was 2019 really a 'number ago') I happened upon this film at the cinema, and it was the core piece in a fabulous night out with my wife. The film itself pulled us in with its star power: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie - and the star power worked a treat. They portrayed their characters exceptionally - offering what I might perceive to be a glimpse into 1960s Hollywood - set in the hills in Cielo drive.
- A haunting address that I couldn't quite put my finger on.
The film itself isn't particularly violent, in places it is rather humorous, and at the centre is a love story. DiCaprio is a "star of film" in the film, and Pitt, his 'stunt double'. They're trying to figure out the ever changing social and political landscape in Hollywood. It's chaotic, and the characters have messy lives. We're a fly on the wall in this film -
Then it clicks - this is a very liberal re-telling of the Charles Manson murders. With some humour, the films comes to this concluding place - it's a bit violent, but the fictional re-creation also has a level of amusement to it. The 2hrs and 15 minutes flew by; I don't think I checked my watch once!
In the end, the credits came up and I seen Tarantino's name. I remember discussing this in the car on the way home, neither of us were aware in advance he was the director - I wonder if we knew, whether we would have still gone.
