Every once in a while, a film comes along which is particularly compelling - you look at it, and think 'WOW'. You don't remember the plotlines, but you remember the artistry which went into the film's construction. For me, that film is Sin City. I guess you'd call it an old one now, since it's release in 2005!
The film plays out in black and white, using pops of colour to add impact to the screen. The world of the narrative itself is dark - mirroring the typical film noir detective setting - except, this is no Phillip Marlowe - it's far more gritty and violent.
The directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez should be commended for the innovative canvas they crafted. I want to show you a couple of stills from the film, they don't quite do the overall film justice - if you can sit through the violence, this one is worth a watch or three - they weave in unreal elements, colour pops and disorientating shots to achieve their brilliant effect.
