Let me tell you, it is a right of passage in Australia, that you'll be sat down, and you will watch 'The Castle' - likely with your father, since it is the epitome of 'Dad Humour'. You might roll your eyes as the characters take to the screen, but it won't take long before the magic happens.
This is a picture of the Kerrigan family. They're the prime picture of working class Australia bogans. In the centre is the father, Darryl - and he's about as fair dinkum as they come. He's a good sort of bloke who values the simple things in life, largely revolving his family - and his greyhounds.
In a nutshell, the plot of the film is: the Kerrigan's live next to an airport, and the government is trying to compulsorily acquire their land to build a runway. The premise becomes: a man's home is his castle. Darryl takes the fight to the High Court of Australia, and wins! But, it's not so much the David and Goliath re-hash that's worth watching this for, it's the one liners.
I've put seven clips in below - they go for a total of 50 seconds. Worth your time if you want to develop your lexical abilities! @notacinephile @papacrusher
From start to finish, the film is filled with one-liners, which have become deeply embedded in the way Australians speak - the film's script, quite powerfully, offering new language to us all.
Every night at dinner, I say to my wife, 'And what do you call this?'
- Thanks to Darryl (Have a watch of this 15 second clip - you'll get the humour), who uses this line each time the family have a meal in the film.
And then, there's the old favourite, 'Straight to the poolroom'. This is a true expression of delight in something. Anything of meaning or significant, regardless of how shit it is - if it gets the acclamation, 'Straight to the poolroom' - that's the highest praise it could possibly receive.
- Thanks Darryl for another wonder moment (this clip is 4 seconds, you can handle that).
And, if you can't really explain something - well, 'It's just the vibe of it'
- We can thank Darryl's lawyer for this one, trying to win a case, without any real law at all. Just the vibe, you know?
And the most iconic, 'Tell him he's dreamin'. You here this one a lot - it's an expression to say 'No', or 'That's unlikely'. Here's a 10 second compilation of 'he's dreamin'. Thanks Darryl!
And then, let's say you're stuck with not much to say - Darryl's got the answer, here's another 5 second grab:
Need to insult someone? Darryl has you covered, why don't you 'Suffer in your jocks'?
And, Darryl let's us know that it's necessary to celebrate the small stuff. Did you know, 'Dale dug a hole'?
So there you have it, a whole new world of vocab ready to share with the ones you love most. Thanks for stopping by.
