Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) - REVIEW - [ENGLISH-SPANISH]

The legend we all know as Indiana Jones returns for the last time with the title Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Harrison Ford returns as Indy and, now in his 70s, not to say 80s, he faces the Nazis once again, something common in Indiana Jones films. There is this thing called the Antikythera, or the Dial of Destiny, which is said to be able to calculate the cracks in space-time and maybe this seems like quite a bit of science fiction for an Indy movie but it's crazy. To be precise, in 1969, we see Indiana Jones as a broken man about to hang up his boots, he drinks too much, he has problems with his partner and he doesn't feel good about himself, then his goddaughter Helena appears and this new adventure begins.

The plot is very typical of the Indiana Jones series, there is an evil man, Jürgen Voller, who intends to use the Clock of Destiny to alter history and Helena and Indy pursue the artifact before Renaldo does, there are many car chases, tombs that open and a good number of Nazis to beat up. This movie has a lot of action scenes but they don't have that Spielberg charm. There's a chase scene in New York during the Apollo 11 astronaut parade and, for a moment, I thought something good was coming but the scene was normal and came to nothing. I think they had good material but they didn't know how to seize the opportunity.

La trama es muy típica de las series de Indiana Jones, hay un malvado, Jürgen Voller que pretende utilizar el Reloj del Destino para alterar la historia y Helena e Indy persiguen el artefacto antes de que lo haga Renaldo, hay muchas persecuciones en carro, tumbas que se abren y por un buen número de nazis a los que golpear. Harrison Ford is surprising. Even though he's 80, he's still got it, that characteristic Indiana Jones charisma, although it seems as if the film fell short for him and they didn't know where to put him and he becomes a bit of a nuisance. Sometimes he's the usual hero, the one with the skills to save the day and make things work, and other times he's simply an observer who watches as other characters steal the scene. Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays Helena and I didn't really like her, she seems to be in a different movie, she never quite fits in and I wasn't convinced as a treasure hunter. Mads Mikkelsen is the typical Nazi villain in the movie and perhaps a bit boring for a franchise that has presented some great villains.

Harrison Ford sorprende aunque tenga 80 años sigue teniendo lo suyo, ese carisma característico de Indiana Jones, aunque parece como si la película se quedó corta para él y no saben dónde ponerlo y se convierte como en un fastidio, a veces es el héroe de siempre, el que tiene las habilidades para salvar el día y hacer que las cosas funcionen y otras veces es simplemente un observador que ve cómo otros personajes se roban la escena. Phoebe Waller-Bridge hace el papel de Helena y la verdad no me gustó mucho, pareciera que estuviera en otra película, nunca llega a encajar del todo y no me llegó a convencer como cazadora de tesoros. Mads Mikkelsen es el típico malo nazi de la película y quizás resulta algo aburrido para una franquicia que ha presentado algunos malvados estupendos.

I liked that Ford was back in action and that the film was along the same lines as the first ones, but many times it seemed like a copy of the previous ones. I think the problem is that the message of the film was not well defined and it is not clear what it wants to say, if it is to remind us of the previous films or to see how the new protagonist takes over or if it is about aging and that even if this happens one is still important. I really don't know, but I thought it failed to achieve its objective. Now the ending did grab me, from the whole trip around the world and the fight against the Nazis, Indiana Jones and company get to travel in time, the destiny clock is revealed as a real time machine and they are all transported to ancient Sicily, the time travel leads to the final fight with the evil one, but this time Indiana Jones uses his head more than his fists to win. In the end everything turns out well, Indiana and Helena return to their own time and everyone they care about is alive and well.

Me gustó que Ford volviera a la acción y que la película estuviera en la misma línea de las primeras, pero muchas veces me pareció una copia de las anteriores, creo que el problema es que no se definió bien el mensaje de la película y no se sabe bien lo que quiere contar, si es que recordemos las películas anteriores o ver como la nueva protagonista toma el relevo o si trata sobre el envejecimiento y que aunque esto ocurra uno sigue siendo importante, la verdad no sé pero me pareció que no logró el objetivo. Ahora el final si me atrapó, de todo el viaje por el mundo y la lucha contra los nazis, Indiana Jones y compañía llegan a viajar en el tiempo, el reloj del destino se revela como una auténtica máquina del tiempo y todos son transportados a la antigua Sicilia, el viaje en el tiempo lleva a la pelea final con el malvado, pero esta vez Indiana Jones usa más la cabeza que los golpes para ganarle. Al final todo sale bien, Indiana y Helena regresan a su tiempo y todos los que les importan están vivos y bien.

On the one hand, I liked seeing Indiana face real historical figures, like Archimedes, for example, although I can't deny that that part seems a bit out of place and that it lacked some of the humor characteristic of the saga. I think that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny tries to be as good as the first films but doesn't quite manage it. I liked the action scenes and Harrison Ford's performance but I was left expecting something like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Score 6.8/10.
