Hello, my dear cinephile friends, I don't understand why I haven't done a review before about this wonderful jewel of Hispanic cinema, because we can't forget that on this side of the world we also have great film wizards who know perfectly how to create and represent stories, masters of the seventh art such as Alfonso Cuarón, Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Almenábar and of course Guillermo del Toro, who among so many other great films, captivated me in 2006 with "El Laberinto del Fauno" (Pan's Labyrinth) so today I invite you to relax and read this post where you will find my interpretation.
Hola, mis queridos amigos cinéfilos, no entiendo como es que yo no había hecho una review antes acerca de esta maravillosa joya del cine hispano, porque no podemos olvidarnos que en este lado del mundo también tenemos grandes magos del cine que saben perfectamente como crear y representar historias, maestros del séptimo arte como lo son Alfonso Cuarón, Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro Almenábar y desde luego Guillermo del Toro, que entre tantos otros films grandiosos, me cautivó en el 2006 con "El Laberinto del Fauno", así que el día de hoy te invito a relajarte y leer este post en el que encontrarás mi interpretación.
Overview/Resumen
This film tells us the story of Ofelia from two different contexts, the real world and the one we conceive of as "fantasy" but which still coexists with reality, as inescapable proof that it exists in some form. Ofelia meets a pan who tells her that she is really the daughter of a king who lives in the underworld, that at some point she ascended to the surface but left her memories behind, however her real father, the king, has made several portals around the world so that she could return, of which only one remains, the pan warns her that to return she must carry out three tasks, and gives her a book whose pages are blank, warning her that she must only open it at the right time to be told what to do.
Este film nos cuenta la historia de Ofelia desde dos contextos diferentes, el mundo real y el que concebimos como "fantasía" pero que aún así coexiste con la realidad, como una prueba ineludible de que existe de algún modo. Ofelia encuentra a un fauno que le dice que ella realmente es la hija de un rey que vive en el mundo subterráneo, que en algún momento ella subió a la superficie pero dejó sus recuerdos atrás, sin embargo su verdadero padre, el rey, ha hecho varios portales alrededor del mundo para que ella pudiera regresar, de los cuales solo queda uno, el fauno le advierte que para regresar debe llevar a cabo tres tareas, y le entrega un libro cuyas paginas están en blanco, advirtiéndole que solo debe abrirlo en el momento adecuado para que le indiquen lo que debe hacer.
However, as these events unfold, Ofelia must face her other reality, she is the stepdaughter of Captain Vidal, a fascist villain who is obsessed with two things, catching the rebels hiding in the mountains, and making sure that his legacy is not forgotten, something he plans to do through his unborn son (who will be Ofelia's brother), Living in the middle of the civil war in the Franco era is a headache for anyone and even the most innocent, like children, are forced to grow up quickly, something Ofelia learns and which will be the key to the end of the story where she will have to face the last of the trials which, if successful, will lead her back to her original world.
Sin embargo, mientras suceden estos acontecimientos, Ofelia debe enfrentarse a su otra realidad, es la hijastra del Capitán Vidal, un villano fascista que está obsesionado con dos cosas, con atrapar a los rebeldes que se ocultan en las montañas, y con asegurarse de que su legado no sea olvidado, algo que piensa hacer a través de su hijo que está por nacer (y que será hermano de Ofelia) Vivir en plena guerra civil en la época franquista representa un dolor de cabeza para cualquiera e incluso hasta los más inocentes, como los niños, se ven obligados a madurar rápidamente, algo que Ofelia aprende y que será la clave para el final de la historia donde tendrá que enfrentarse a la última de las pruebas que, en el caso de que tenga éxito, la conducirá a su mundo original.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
I found this film wonderful in every way and for different reasons, first of all we have the fact that Guillermo del Toro is not only the director, but the scriptwriter and producer, therefore we see his soul in every element that we can see on the screen, Del Todo has always been characterized by creating fantasy stories that are usually mixed with historical dramas, Something similar to what the Colombian writer García Márquez did in some of his novels such as "One Hundred Years of Solitude", for example, this is his personal stamp as a director, and his way of showing us that the world has two sides, two sides, one pleasant and the other terrible that are forced to coexist in the same space.
Este film me pareció maravilloso en todos los sentidos y por diferentes razones, en primer lugar tenemos el hecho de que Guillermo del Toro no solo es el director, sino el guionista y productor, por lo tanto vemos su alma en cada elemento que podemos ver en la pantalla, Del Todo siempre se ha caracterizado por crear historias de fantasía que se ven mezcladas generalmente con dramas históricos, algo parecido a lo que hacía el escritor colombiano García Márquez en algunas de sus novelas como "Cien Años de Soledad", por ejemplo, este es el sello personal de él como director, y su forma de mostrarnos que el mundo tiene dos vertientes, dos lados, uno agradable y el otro terrible que se ven forzados a coexistir en un mismo espacio.
Story/Historia
In my interpretation Ofelia was not prepared for that cruel and merciless world that everyone calls "reality", her soul is too innocent and clean, although we could see that in some way she had been contaminated with some nuances of that world, such as disobedience, for example, and it is something that we can see in the scene of the Pale Man, one of the things she had to do was to follow the instructions of the pan and the fairies, This shows us that, although Ofelia has a "divine" or at least extraordinary origin, having spent so much time in that world, she began to catch a little of its bad habits, but during her third trial she manages to redeem herself by bringing out her true altruistic nature, which grants her as a reward to leave that world in which tragedy and pain is part of everyday life.
En mi interpretación Ofelia no estaba preparada para ese mundo tan cruel y despiadado al que todos llaman "realidad", su alma es demasiado inocente y limpia, aunque sí pudimos ver que de cierta forma se había contaminado con algunos matices propios de ese mundo, como la desobediencia, por ejemplo, y es algo que podemos constatar en la escena del Hombre Pálido, una de las cosas que ella debía hacer era seguir las instrucciones del fauno y las hadas, y no dejarse tentar por la abundancia de la mesa, pero ella no lo escuchó y pagó las consecuencias, esto nos demuestra que, aunque Ofelia tiene un origen "divino" o al menos extraordinario, al haber pasado tanto tiempo en ese mundo, comenzó a contagiarse un poco de sus malas costumbres, pero durante su tercera prueba ella logra redimirse sacando a relucir su verdadera naturaleza altruista, lo que le concede como premio salir de ese mundo en el que la tragedia y el dolor forma parte del día a día.
On the other hand, Mercedes, (the housekeeper) and Doctor Ferrero are proof that in this world corrupted by evil and selfishness there is also solidarity, bravery and love, it is a world worth fighting for, something we clearly see represented with the rebels of the mountain, who are not willing to submit to the fascist regime. The unborn brother can be taken as the hope for a better world, a chance to start again to become a good man, something that is far from the intentions of his father, Captain Vidal.
Por otra parte, Mercedes, (el ama de llaves) y el doctor Ferrero son la prueba de que en ese mundo corrupto por la maldad y el egoísmo también existe la solidaridad, la valentía y el amor, es un mundo por el que vale la pena luchar, algo que claramente vemos representado con los rebeldes de la montaña, que no están dispuestos a someterse al régimen fascista. El hermano que está por nacer podemos tomarlo como la esperanza de un mundo mejor, una oportunidad para recomenzar hacer de él un hombre de bien, algo que dista mucho de las intenciones de su padre, el Capitán Vidal.
Another of the most important things that caught my attention in the story, is the fact of how Del Toro handled the reward and punishment according to the actions of the characters, on the one hand we have Vidal, obsessed with the idea of perpetuating his name and his legacy through his son, but due to his selfish, cruel and ruthless attitude he dies with the certainty that his son will not even know his name, Ofelia, on the other hand, who is a being of light, altruistic and tender, dies as a heroine in the arms of someone who loves her, and who will make sure that her little brother knows what her life was like and how she protected him until the end, thus obtaining free passage to the subterranean kingdom where he will be eternally happy.
Otra de las cosas más importantes que me llamó la atención en la historia, es el hecho de como Del Toro manejó la recompensa y el castigo según las acciones de los personajes, por una parte tenemos a Vidal, obsesionado con la idea de perpetuar su nombre y su legado a través de su hijo, pero debido a su actitud egoísta, cruel y despiadada muere con la certeza de que su hijo ni siquiera conocerá su nombre, de esta forma se hace realidad su mayor temor, obteniendo el castigo que merece, Ofelia en cambio, quien es un ser de luz, altruista y tierna, muere como una heroína en brazos de alguien que la quiere, y que se asegurará de que su hermanito conozca como fue su vida y como lo protegió hasta el final, obteniendo de esta forma el paso libre al reino subterráneo donde será eternamente feliz.
Monsters/Monstruos
I think that some of the elements, creatures and monsters that Del Toro shows us in this film, have a close relationship with other characters, let's say that they can be like his alter ego of the fantasy world, the first one I found was the tree that is part of the first test of Ofelia, this tree has in its interior a toad that keeps it sick, this toad, although it is harmful for the tree, keeps in its interior a key that will be very important for the advance of Ofelia towards her original world, her mission is to destroy the toad to obtain this key. I think the tree may represent Carmen, Ofelia's mother, who is pregnant but somehow the baby robs her of vitality, and this baby, like the toad, was to be sacrificed at the end of the day so that Ofelia could advance towards her true world.
Yo pienso que algunas de los elementos, criaturas y monstruos que Del Toro nos muestra en esta película, guardan una estrecha relación con otros personajes, digamos que pueden ser como su alter ego del mundo de fantasía, el primero que encontré fue el árbol que forma parte de la primera prueba de Ofelia, este árbol tiene en su interior un sapo que lo mantiene enfermo, este sapo, a pesar de que es perjudicial para el árbol, guarda en su interior una llave que será importantísima para el avance de Ofelia hacia su mundo original, la misión de ella es destruir al sapo para obtener esa llave. Creo que el árbol puede representar a Carmen, la madre de Ofelia, que está embarazada pero de alguna forma el bebé le roba vitalidad, a su vez este bebé, al igual que el sapo, debía ser sacrificado al final del día para que Ofelia pudiera avanzar hacia su verdadero mundo.
On the other hand we have the Pale Man, who could be the alter ego of Captain Vidal, Del Toro represents him as a repulsive creature, apparently blind, he is in front of a big table on which there is plenty of food, just like the Captain who has everything he wants at his fingertips, He is apparently blind because he does not realise that in his own house someone is conspiring against the fascist regime, but when a simple mistake alerts him, he can "open his eyes" and see what is happening around him, Ofelia is pursued by The Pale Man, just as Mercedes is pursued by Captain Vidal.
Por otra parte tenemos al Hombre Pálido, que pudiera ser el alter ego del Capitán Vidal, Del Toro lo representa como una criatura repulsiva, aparentemente ciega, está frente a una gran mesa sobre la cual hay abundante comida, tal cual como el Capitán que tiene todo cuanto desea al alcance de su mano, aparentemente está ciego porque no se da cuenta de que en su propia casa alguien conspira contra el régimen fascista, pero cuando un simple error lo alerta, él puede "abrir los ojos" y ver lo que ocurre a su alrededor, Ofelia es perseguida por El hombre Pálido, como Mercedes es perseguida por el Capitán Vidal.
Cinematography/Fotografía
The cinematography of this film is very interesting Guillermo del Toro uses a different colour palette depending on the world or the characters that are showing us on screen, on the one hand we have the real world that show us two different elements but that coexist in this world, on the one hand we have the evil that is represented by Vidal, in all the shots where we can appreciate cold tones, generally in blue and grey tones, but on the other hand, when we see Ofelia, who we already know that she represents innocence and goodness that also exists in this world, we notice that the colour palette changes to warm tones, it is also inevitable to notice that the character is almost always illuminated by a halo of golden light that gives her a divine air, something that we also find in the underground world to which she really belongs, it is a world surrounded by a lot of light, with red and golden tones, it is a real visual pleasure.
La fotografía de este film es muy interesante Guillermo del Toro recurre a una paleta de colores diferentes según el mundo o los personajes que nos estén mostrando en pantalla, por una parte tenemos el mundo real que nos muestran dos elementos diferentes pero que coexisten en este mundo, por un lado tenemos la maldad que es representada por Vidal, en todas las toma donde podemos apreciar tonalidades frías, generalmente en tonos azules y grises, pero por otro lado, cuando vemos a Ofelia, que ya sabemos que representa la inocencia y la bondad que también existe en ese mundo, notamos que la paleta de colores cambia a tonalidades cálidas, además es inevitable notar que el personaje casi siempre está iluminado por un halo de luz dorada que le confiere un aire divino, algo que también encontramos en el mundo subterráneo al que ella pertenece realmente, es un mundo rodeado de mucha luz, con tonalidades rojas y doradas, es un verdadero placer visual.
Soundtrack
And last but not least we have the soundtrack which, at least for me, is a real listening pleasure, every note is impregnated with magic and fantasy, but at the same time some themes know how to transmit fear or oppression, my favourite theme is one called "Nada de Mercedes" (Mercedes' Lullaby) is beautiful, interpreted in bocaquiusa, which in musical language refers to a way of humming without opening the mouth, the sound comes out of the nose. This song is as beautiful as it is enigmatic and innocent at the same time, like the film itself.
Y por último pero no menos importante tenemos la banda sonora que, al menos para mi, es un verdadero placer auditivo, cada nota está impregnada de magia y fantasía, pero al mismo tiempo algunos temas saben transmitirnos miedo u opresión, mi tema favorito es uno llamado "Nada de Mercedes" o "Canción de Cuna de Mercedes" es precioso, interpretado en bocaquiusa, que en lenguaje musical se refiere a una forma de tararear sin abrir la boca, el sonido sale por la nariz. Este tema es tan precioso como enigmático e inocente a la vez, como la propia película en sí.
And well friends this has been all for today, I like this film so much that, even though I extended a lot in the post, I feel that I still missed a lot to say, but it really is a jewel of Latin American cinema, in my humble opinion, the performances were superb, each actor managed to convey very efficiently the emotions and feelings of his character, the photography was wonderful, the story unbeatable what else can I say? Y bien amigos esto ha sido todo por hoy, esta película me gusta tanto que, a pesar de que me extendí mucho en el post, siento que todavía me faltó mucho por decir, pero de verdad es una joya del cine hispano, en mi humilde opinión, las actuaciones estuvieron soberbias, cada actor logró transmitir de forma muy eficiente las emociones y sentimientos de su personaje, la fotografía estuvo maravillosa, la historia insuperable ¿Qué más puedo decir?
