Review : “Ralph Wrecks the Internet” - movie by Rich Moore & Phil Johnston (Disney Studios)

Review by @mandibil · 2692d · of Ralph Breaks the Internet

Making a sequel about a rogue, digital arcade game figure, would look like a difficult task after the first movie seem to have exhausred all possibilities for even a slightly different plot or story. The best idea is the one exactly used. Ralph and his girl-racer friend are introduced to the new world of the internet, which without doubt has helped making the arcade world obsolete.

The metaphorical world of the internet is nicely portraid as a scifi metropolis with peoples alter ego’s riding the “highspeed” bands to get to their destinations. Prepare yourself though, for a tsunami of product placements, not least of Disney themselves. It is a bit too much for my taste

The story of the characters is basically pasted from the first movie but then amplified almost to a ridiculous level. Ralph is the brute servant of the entitled, casual looking princess of Vanellope, who just expects to get what she points at, at the expense of Ralph. She is basically a Mary Sue who can enter a deadly car race in grown up (gyncentric) world after being carried around on a silver platter in a “candy” kiddie race in an arcade game. It is sadly another extension of the politically correctness that girls are just so perfect and empowered, just by the fact of being a girl

Now I was not exactly bored, as the action keeps coming at a regular pace, but the character’s are not developing and the ever serving attitude of Ralph, while getting blamed for everything going wrong AND for being portrayd as the idiot male comic relief is so ridiculous and a pathetic trait of Disney of recent years.

Personally I hope that they stop the series here and let it rest. My ten yo daughter was also quite disappointed in it and that is just about the best critique I can give

6/10
