Today I want to talk about one of my favorite movies, since I think it is a story that, although strange, has a unique dark magic that can captivate you. This, of course, if you like sinister things as much as I do.

A 2006 Spanish-language film written and directed by the great Guillermo del Toro, The Pan's Labyrinth tells the story of Ofelia, a very intelligent and insightful little girl who lives with her mother, who at the same time has a relationship with an army captain in the civil war of Spain. The woman is pregnant, almost about to give birth, so she and Ofelia move to the town where the captain is. Ofelia is not entirely pleased with the idea because she does not appreciate the soldier very much, but after all there is nothing she can do to stop it.
Once in the town in the middle of a forest, the girl finds a strange insect, a rare species of mantis that for some reason begins to follow her. There, Ofelia will discover a strange underground world full of the strangest and darkest creatures, a world where she would also discover an ancient prophecy that was probably being fulfilled at that moment.

Drama, magic, fantasy, war history but above all, that terror that excites me so much. The one that doesn't necessarily paralyze you with fear, scaring you to death, but rather leaves you with that disturbing feeling. Watching this film is not necessarily pleasant since it is not a pretty story, but it is incredibly interesting therefore it is entertaining, it keeps you hooked to discover where the labyrinth of that strange being that talks to Ofelia will lead her, the one that terrifies her but it intrigues her too much, so much so that not even she can ignore what is happening down there in its world.
The story is full of puzzles and strange and sinister "tasks", things where you don't exactly understand their purpose or goal, but you know something isn't quite right. Watching this movie from start to finish feels unsettling, which is precisely how the protagonist feels, so they did an incredible job of conveying that.
Also, being set in 1944 gives it that distant touch, something away from the modern world that makes the aura of the film more solemn, even more so if you add details of the war conflict. The story has subplots that are also interesting, and somehow they all converge logically so they don't clash. Everything in general is interesting.
Furthermore, not only is the story disturbing, but visually the design of everything is also deeply uncanny. Just imagine a thirteen-year-old girl seeing creatures like the one in the images, creatures that she doesn't really know if they are benevolent or evil, but that for some reason attract her... Even me at my age would be terrified.
They are dark scenes full of tension, with visually (and naturally) quite horrendous characters, who can even give you some nightmares or at least leave you thinking about them for quite some time... In essence, the word that best describes this film is disturbing.
Guillermo del Toro is an incredible director who knows how to perfectly convey the essence of his stories, and of course the vast majority are strange stories, full of magic but not a conventional one and with his unique touch of terror. It is not a film that will terrify you but it is certainly not something for everyone. It depends a lot on your sensitivity and your age, since I would not recommend it to children.
However, if you are a lover of horror and magic I would tell you to go see this movie if you haven't already. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

El día de hoy quiero hablarles de una de mis películas favoritas, puesto que me parece una historia que aunque extraña, tiene una magia oscura singular que puede llegar a cautivarte. Esto, por supuesto, si te gustan las cosas siniestras tanto como a mí.

Película de habla hispana del año 2006 escrita y dirigida por el gran Guillermo del Toro, El Laberinto del Fauno narra la historia de Ofelia, una pequeña niña muy inteligente y perspicaz que vive con su madre, quien tiene una relación con un capitán del ejercito en la guerra civil de España. La mujer está embarazada, casi a punto de dar a luz, por lo que ella y Ofelia se mudan al pueblo donde se encuentra el capitán. Ofelia no está del todo agradada con la idea porque no aprecia mucho al militar, pero después de todo no hay nada que ella pueda hacer para impedirlo.
Una vez en el pueblo en medio de un bosque, la niña encuentra un extraño insecto, una especie rara de mantis que por algún motivo comienza a seguirla. Allí Ofelia descubriría un extraño mundo subterráneo repleto de criaturas de lo más raras y oscuras, mundo donde también descubriría una antigua profecía que probablemente se estaba cumpliendo en ese instante.

Drama, magia, fantasía, historia bélica pero sobretodo, ese terror que me emociona tanto. Ese que no necesariamente te paraliza del miedo, sino que más bien te deja esa sensación inquietante. Ver esta película no es necesariamente agradable puesto que no es una historia bonita, pero sí es increíblemente interesante por lo que es entretenida, te mantiene enganchado para descubrir a dónde llevará el laberinto de ese extraño ser que habla con Ofelia, ese que la aterroriza pero la intriga demasiado, tanto que ni ella misma puede desentenderse de lo que ocurre allí abajo en su mundo.
La historia está llena de acertijos y «pruebas» extrañas y siniestras, cosas que no entiendes exactamente su propósito u objetivo, pero que sabes que algo no está del todo bien. Al ver esta película de inicio a fin se siente inquietante, lo cual es precisamente cómo se siente la protagonista, así que hicieron un trabajo increíble en transmitir eso.
También al estar ambientada en 1944 le da ese toque lejano, algo apartado de la modernidad que hace que el aura de la película sea más solemne, incluso más si le agregas detalles del conflicto de la guerra. La historia tiene subtramas que a su vez son interesantes, y de alguna forma todas convergen de manera lógica por lo que no desentonan. Todo en general es interesante.
Además no solo la historia es inquietante sino que visualmente el diseño de todo es también profundamente perturbador. Tan solo imagina a una niña de trece años viendo criaturas como la de las imágenes, criaturas que realmente no sabe si son benevolentes o malignas, pero que por alguna razón la atraen... Hasta a mí a mi edad me aterraría.
Son escenas tenebrosas cargadas de tensión, con personajes visualmente (y en naturaleza) bastante horrendos, que pueden incluso causarte alguna que otra pesadilla, o al menos dejarte pensando en ellos un buen rato... En esencia, la palabra que mejor describe esta película es perturbadora.
Guillermo del Toro es un director increíble que sabe cómo transmitir perfectamente la esencia de sus historias, y por supuesto la gran mayoría son historias extrañas, llenas de magia pero no una convencional sino con su toque único de terror. No es una película que te vaya a aterrorizar pero ciertamente no es algo para todo público. Depende mucho de tu sensibilidad y de tu edad, puesto que a quienes no se la recomendaría es a los más pequeños.
Sin embargo, si eres un amante del terror y magia te diría que corras a ver ésta película si no lo has hecho ya. Estoy segura que la disfrutarás tanto como yo.
