Today I'm here to talk about the second season of the famous Viking anime. Vinland continues with the story of Thorfinn, that young man who was forced from a very young age to become a warrior who would experience unthinkable traumas since his six short years when his world turned into blood and (self) destruction.

If you want to read my more detailed opinion on the initial premise, in this post I tell you about it. For this post I will focus on the elements that have changed the most and new things in anime since for many people it became "boring" but in my opinion this is not really the case...

I think that in this season there are many more characters than in the previous one, so I will focus on the ones that seemed most interesting and/or relevant to me.

Thorfinn

Of course the protagonist. Thorfinn falls into depression after what happens in the season one finale. He is sold into slavery and ends up working on a farm where he becomes a walking dead man. He doesn't speak, he doesn't show any feelings, you don't even see an expression on his face. He just moves by inertia and instinct.

He has lost the meaning of his life when he sees how the possibility of consummating that longed-for revenge disappears before his eyes. It is that Thorfinn lived for his revenge, so when Askeladd died he lost himself. He was nothing without his rage. He was left in the middle of nowhere when his plans turned to dust, to ashes. So Thorfinn became a slave not only to his owner but also to his own mind.

Inside, a fight began to be waged that was perhaps tougher than all those battles in which he was involved, since his actions were becoming his own executioner, the traumas finally came to light after all those years where he tried to bury them, with every person he killed. It was when he ran out of fuel from his anger that he was able to become aware of everything he did as well as what he felt. He fell apart when he became aware.

However, hitting rock bottom can help make the decision to change and that's what he did. With many years of hard work Thorfinn underwent a complete transformation as he realized that war is pointless as no one really has enemies, that freedom is peace and peace can be the answer to everything.

Finally the warrior began the path of the hero.

Einar

One of the new characters in this season and in fact, one of my favorites. Einar is a young farmer who has not had an easy life. When he was little his father died in the war, so his family consists of his mother and sister. They manage after what happened to lead a normal life. They were getting it when one day the war broke out again in the town. They try to run away but his mother and sister are killed in the process. Einar tries to do something, he is filled with anger and despair but he is not skilled in combat so he is subdued and later sold as a slave.

It is on the farm of his buyer that he meets another slave, Thorfinn, with whom he would have to work and live until he was able to buy his freedom.

Einar is the character with the highest resilience in the whole anime. Despite the constant traumas he suffers from, he manages to analyze the full picture and reach the most realistic perspective, sometimes even positive. He is impulsive but finally manages to regulate himself. Most of his character is forged by his mother, the one from whom he inherits the desire to live free, justice as well as enormous nobility. Far from being the “nice for the funk” character, he actually treats people based on his judgment of them. If they are good he is equally good, if they are not he will soon put them in their place (at least verbally).

I think he is one of the few characters with some leading role that is really good and sensible. A little more human. To some extent it reminds me of Thors because, only because they are noble doesn't mean they don't have a strong temper. In addition, he also works as Thorfinn's new anchor point, so having certain characteristics similar to Thors seems to me a wise choice for that role. Einar and Thorfinn become brothers, both wounded souls who decide to heal by accepting each other's company.

There is no adjective that describes her better than "martyr". A completely tragic story. A self-sacrificing woman, wife and mother who gives in to her husband's decision to initiate a conflict where, if victorious, he would gain unimaginable wealth for the family, because yes, they have a little boy that is only one year old. Arnheid had a bad feeling that actually becomes true: everything goes wrong. Her husband and she are sold as slaves, as for the little one, he has no value for the Vikings so he is killed.

She coincides in the same farm where Einar and Thorfinn are (her husband goes to another place) and tries to comply with all the orders, accepting her fate... At least superficially because later we see that this grief for her lost family actually consumes her internally. In my opinion, the trauma is so severe that this always appeased attitude no matter what happened was not a sign of serenity but of indifference towards everything. She was in a depressed state.

Also (strong spoiler) when she is pregnant again with the product of an obviously abusive relationship, that new child becomes her only motivation to live since she somehow projected that desire to protect and raise that child that she lost. At all times with every action Arnheid projected her trauma.

She turned out to be a well-achieved character because initially when they don't tell us anything about her story, you don't see her lose her sanity at any time until we really know more about her. It is there when she relives the trauma and begins to externalize everything when we see a character completely plunged into hopelessness.

However, although it is interesting, it really seems to me that the plot can continue perfectly without her. She is not an essential character nor does she contribute anything beyond the drama which is not bad but not really necessary.

Canute

In season one he was one of the characters I liked the most because he seemed to have a strong conviction and personality. For almost the entire second season he continues in the same way, what's more, they give him an extra touch: that future king who seemed to be the hope of a people is going hopelessly crazy. He begins to have ideas of greatness, he believes he is omnipotent and that he will be able to build peace, but to do so he performs corrupt and perverse acts since war continues to proliferate, death... Just what his father had warned him about. The power of the crown was rotting him from within. Yes, the now-deceased king's father told him, the same one who sometimes speaks to Canute from the corners, where he sees his decapitated head.

Canute, far from being that sweet and innocent child, is now cold and calculating with so few scruples that he doesn't mind doing anything, no matter how immoral or crazy, in order to achieve his goal of creating the perfect world. A sociopath. A character that seemed great to me until the end of the season where they completely ruined it for me.

In a long talk, Thorfinn tries to make him see how bad he is and all the chaos he is generating under a completely altered perception of reality (of course, he is crazy) and that was enough for Canute to become aware and rectify everything that he did... Are you serious?! The guy was hopelessly crazy, but a few words with his old bodyguard were enough to heal him, so that the hallucinations and unreal perception completely disappeared in a matter of a few minutes. It seemed to me a super far-fetched and meaningless result that was used as a desperate resource because perhaps they did not know how to give continuity to the story.

I went from having great expectations to being quite disappointed.

My opinion

This arc of the anime seems completely necessary to me since it is a moment of vindication, healing and overcoming all the immense pain as well as the tragedies that caused it. If Thorfinn hadn't changed, we would have been left with a warrior who only kills for no reason, because he that is the only thing he knows how to do. There really wouldn't be an interesting plot because it would only consist of killing because you have to kill, but without knowing why.

If all Thorfinn wanted was to kill Askeladd but he's already dead, what else could Thorfinn do? There was no other motivation for him so to keep fighting was a lost cause. What's the point of animating something like that? They would be monotonous chapters of senseless killing. On the other hand, when elaborating this redemption framework where the protagonist goes through moral and spiritual dilemmas, it seems to me by far something more interesting to see and honestly, it was the only possible path in the story. There was nothing else to be done, it was either that or that Thorfinn had somehow died at the end of the first season.

Perhaps what can be boring is not necessarily the plot itself but the style of narration that is particularly slow, so there are episodes that feel like filler when in reality they are a preamble to a situation that is probably quite dramatic and entertaining.

So did Vinland decline in this season? In my opinion, no. It took the only possible course in the story in order to give it continuity. Now, certainly the drama content plus the slow storytelling may not be a combination that many people like, especially those who are used to constant action and fast resolution of the plots. But that's not enough to say that the story is bad, it just might not be entertaining for everyone.

But if like me you love drama and exploring concepts like introspection, morality and the fight for redemption, Vinland is still an excellent option to watch. I fully recommend it since it will make you remember that your worst enemy may be yourself.

Hoy les vengo a hablar de la segunda temporada del famoso anime de vikingos. Vinland continúa con la historia de Thorfinn, aquel joven que se vio forzado desde muy pequeño a convertirse en un guerrero que viviría traumas impensables puesto que desde sus seis cortos años su mundo se convirtió en sangre y (auto)destrucción.

Si quieres leer mi opinión más detallada sobre la premisa inicial, en este post te comento sobre eso. Para este post me centraré en los elementos que han cambiado más las cosas nuevas en el anime puesto que para muchas personas se volvió «aburrido» pero en mi opinión esto no es realmente así...

Creo que en esta temporada hay muchos más personajes que en la anterior por lo que me enfocaré en los que a mí me parecieron más interesantes y/o relevantes.

Por supuesto el protagonista. Thorfinn cae en una especie de depresión luego de lo que ocurre en el final de la primera temporada. Es vendido como esclavo y termina trabajando en una granja donde se convierte en un muerto andante. No habla, no demuestra sentimientos, ni siquiera se ve una expresión en su cara. Simplemente se mueve por inercia e instinto.

Ha perdido el sentido de su vida al ver cómo la posibilidad de consumar aquella añorada venganza desaparece ante sus ojos. Es que Thorfinn vivía por y para su venganza, por lo que al morir Askeladd se perdió a sí mismo. No era nada sin su rabia. Quedó en el medio de la nada cuando sus planes se convirtieron en polvo, en cenizas. Así que Thorfinn se convirtió en un esclavo no solo de su dueño sino también de su propia mente.

En su interior se comenzo a librar una lucha que quizá fue más ruda que toda aquellas batallas en las que estuvo, puesto que sus acciones se estaban convirtiendo en su propio verdugo, los traumas salieron a la luz finalmente después de todos esos años donde intentó enterrarlos con cada persona que asesinaba. Cuando se quedó sin el combustible de su ira fue cuando pudo hacer consciencia de todo lo que hizo así como lo que sintió. Se desmoronó cuando hizo consciencia.

Sin embargo el tocar fondo puede ayudar a tomar la decisión de cambiar y eso fue lo que hizo. Con muchos años de mucho esfuerzo Thorfinn atravesó una transformación completa puesto que se dio cuenta que la guerra no tiene sentido ya que nadie realmente tiene enemigos, que la libertad es paz y la paz puede ser la respuesta a todo.

Finalmente el guerrero comenzó el camino del héroe.

De los personajes nuevos en esta temporada y de hecho, uno de mis favoritos. Einar es un joven granjero que no ha tenido una vida fácil. Cuando era pequeño su padre muere en la guerra, por lo que su familia consta de su madre y hermana. Se las arreglan después de lo ocurrido para llevar una vida normal. Lo estaban consiguiendo cuando un día la guerra estalla de nuevo en el pueblo. Intentan huir pero su madre y hermana resultan asesinadas en el proceso. Einar intenta hacer algo, se llena de ira y desesperación pero no es nada hábil en combate por lo que es sometido para luego ser vendido como esclavo.

Es en la granja de su comprador donde conoce a otro esclavo, Thorfinn, con quien tendría que trabajar y convivir hasta lograr comprar su libertad.

Einar es el personaje con la mayor capacidad de resiliencia en todo el anime. A pesar de los constantes traumas por los que sufre consigue analizar el panorama y alcanzar la perspectiva más realista, en ocasiones incluso positiva. Es impulsivo pero finalmente consigue regularse. La mayor parte de su carácter es forjado por su madre, aquella de quien hereda el deseo de vivir libre, de justicia así como una enorme nobleza. Lejos de ser el personaje «amigable porque sí», realmente trata a las personas en base a su juicio sobre ellas. Si son buenas él es igualmente bueno, si no lo son no tardará en ponerlos en su lugar (al menos verbalmente).

Creo que es de los pocos personajes con algo de protagonismo que es realmente bueno y sensato. Un poco más humano. Hasta cierto punto me recuerda a Thors porque no por el hecho de ser noble significa que no tienen un temperamento fuerte. Además también funciona como el nuevo punto de anclaje de Thorfinn, por lo que al tener ciertas características similares a Thors me parece una elección acertada para ese rol. Einar y Thorfinn se convierten en hermanos, ambos almas heridas que deciden sanar aceptando la compañía del otro.

No hay adjetivo que la describa mejor que «mártir». Una historia completamente trágica. Una mujer, esposa y madre abnegada que cede a la decisión de su esposo de iniciar un conflicto donde de ser victorioso ganaría riqueza inimaginable para la familia, porque sí, tienen un pequeño niño de apenas un año. Arnheid tenía un mal presentimiento que en efecto se cumple: todo sale mal. Su esposo y ella son vendidos como esclavos, en cuanto al pequeño pues no tiene ningún valor así que es asesinado.

Ella coincide en la misma granja donde están Einar y Thorfinn (su esposo va a otro sitio) e intenta cumplir con todas las órdenes, aceptando su destino... Al menos superficialmente porque luego vemos que esta pena por su familia perdida realmente la consume internamente. En mi opinión el trauma es tan severo que esa actitud siempre apaciguada sin importar lo que ocurría no era muestra de serenidad sino de indiferencia hacia todo. Estaba en un estado depresivo.

Además (spoiler fuerte) cuando está nuevamente embarazada con el producto de una relación evidentemente abusiva ese nuevo niño se convierte en su única motivación para vivir puesto que de alguna forma proyectaba ese deseo de proteger y criar a aquel niño que perdió. En todo momento con cada acción Arnheid proyectaba su trauma.

Me resultó un personaje bien logrado porque inicialmente cuando no nos cuentan nada de su historia no se le ve perder la cordura en ningún momento hasta que realmente sabemos más sobre ella. Es allí cuando revive el trauma y comienza a exteriorizar cuando se ve a un personaje completamente sumido en la desesperanza.

Sin embargo aunque es interesante realmente me parece que la trama puede continuar perfectamente sin ella. No es un personaje esencial ni aporta nada más allá de dramatismo que no está mal pero no es realmente necesario.

Canuto

En la temporada uno era uno de los personajes que más me agradaban porque parecía tener una convicción y personalidad firme. Durante casi toda la segunda temporada continúa de la misma forma, es más, le dan un toque extra: aquel futuro rey que parecía ser la esperanza de un pueblo se está volviendo irremediablemente loco. Comienza a tener ideación de grandeza, se cree omnipotente y que logrará construir la paz, pero para ello realiza actos corruptos y perversos puesto que continúa proliferando la guerra, muerte... Justo lo que su padre le había advertido. El poder de la corona lo estaba pudriendo por dentro. Sí, se lo dijo su padre el rey ahora fallecido, el mismo que a veces le habla a Canuto desde los rincones, donde ve su cabeza decapitada.

Canuto lejos de ser aquel niño dulce e inocente ahora es frío y calculador con tan pocos escrúpulos que no le importa hacer cualquier cosa, por inmoral o descabellada que sea, con tal de lograr su propósito de crear el mundo perfecto. Un sociopata. Un personaje que me parecía genial hasta el final de temporada donde para mí lo arruinaron completamente.

En una larga charla Thorfinn intenta hacerle ver lo mal que está y todo el caos que está generando bajo una percepción de la realidad completamente alterada (por supuesto, está loco) y eso fue suficiente para que Canuto tomara consciencia y rectificara todo lo que hizo... ¡¿Es en serio?! El tipo estaba irremediablemente loco, pero bastaron unas palabras con su viejo guardaespaldas para que sanara, para que las alucinaciones y percepción irreal desaparecieran completamente en cuestión de algunos minutos. Me pareció un resultado súper rebuscado y sin sentido que se usó como recurso desesperado porque quizá no sabían cómo darle continuidad a la historia.

De tenerle una gran expectativa pasé a decepcionarme bastante.

Mi opinión

Este arco del anime me parece completamente necesario puesto que es un momento de reivindicación, de sanación y superación de todo el inmenso dolor así como las tragedias que lo ocasionaron. Si Thorfinn no hubiera cambiado nunca nos habríamos quedado con un guerrero que solo mata porque sí, porque es lo único que sabe hacer. Realmente no habría un trama interesante porque sólo consistiría en matar porque hay que matar, pero sin saber ya porqué.

Si lo único que deseaba Thorfinn era matar a Askeladd pero este ya está muerto, ¿qué otra cosa podí hacer Thorfinn? No había otra motivación para él por lo que seguir luchando era una causa perdida. ¿Qué sentido tendría animar algo así? Serían capítulos monótonos de matanzas sin sentido. En cambio al elaborar este marco de redención donde el protagonista atraviesa dilemas morales y espirituales me parece por mucho algo más interesante de ver y honestamente, era el único camino posible en la historia. No se podía hacer otra cosa, era eso o que Thorfinn hubiera muerto de alguna forma al final de la primera temporada.

Quizá lo que puede resultar aburrido no sea necesariamente la trama en sí sino el estilo de narración que es particularmente lento, por lo que hay episodios que se sienten de relleno cuando en realidad son un preámbulo de una situación que probablemente sea bastante dramática y entretenida.

Entonces ¿Vinland decayó en esta temporada? En mi opinión, no. Tomó el único curso posible en la historia para poder darle continuidad. Ahora, ciertamente el contenido de drama más la narración lenta puede ser una combinación que no le agrade a mucha personas, sobretodo a las que están acostumbradas a la acción constante y la resolución rápida de las tramas. Pero eso no quiere decir que la historia sea mala, simplemente puede que no sea entretenida para todo el mundo.

Pero si como a mí te encanta el drama y la exploración de conceptos como la introspección, moralidad y lucha en la redención, Vinland sigue siendo un opción excelente para ver. Lo recomiendo completamente puesto que te hará recordar que puede ser que tu peor enemigo seas tú mismo.
