I'm here to tell you about the first season of Vinland Saga, an anime that's somewhat out of the ordinary since it doesn't tell us about a japanese history, but about Vikings. Yep, with only that it draws a lot of attention because animes usually focus on Japan, but this time we have as protagonist an Icelander named Thorfinn, an ordinary boy who's only six years old and lives in a small town of the eleventh century where it's always snowing.

Thorfinn lives with his mother Helga, his older sister Ylva and his father Thors, who due to his temper, imposing presence and above all his great nobility, is the one who stands out the most among the inhabitants of the town. Everyone respects him and everyone looks to him for guidance. He is everyone role model, especially for his little son. The family is dedicated to raising cattle, marketing, among other tasks.

One day some foreigners arrive in the country and among them one of their slaves escapes, arriving to the town. Thors decides to help him since the poor man is dying but of course, the owners begin to look for him until they find him at Thors' house. He buys the slave to save him but this leads to a series of unfortunate consequences...

They discover that Thors has a past, he used to be a Viking from Joms, a fearsome warrior respected by thousands who believed he died in battle. He had decided to escape from that world of blood and (self) destruction but he is finally found and forced to go to war. The villagers had never been exposed to war but far from fearing it they felt enthusiastic, even some young boys volunteered to accompany Thors, including his dear friend Leif.

Thorfinn, being a lively and volatile child, wanted to go fight with his father but Thors flatly forbids him, promising to return soon. Thorfinn leaves upset with him. When they set sail they realize that the little daredevil had hidden on the ship, so they had no choice but to take care of him. Halfway they are ambushed by the Joms Vikings. Knowing that this group of mercenaries was not going to give up easily, Thors began a duel with their leader, someone called Askeladd also a formidable and feared warrior.

Against all odds in this duel Thors is killed right before the eyes of Thorfinn, who right there feels how a part of himself is shattered into a thousand pieces... Full of desolation and incredible hatred, he swears to take revenge.

He becomes the origin of everything; Thorfinn's motivation and who forms his character, in turn serves as an anchor point when the protagonist seems to lose everything. He is noble, brave, intelligent, the definition of a great man who had the revelation at the most critical moment of his life. He realized that this world of perennial death in which he intended to live was worthless. He really was dead in life.

Once he reaches this conclusion, he takes it upon himself to amend his mistakes, to be a different man. A man without enemies.

He is a solid character, very well accomplished despite only having a short appearance. Even in the design of the character and his voice are perfectly representing that calm and patience of Thors. He is certainly the fair representation of a good man.

After being a warrior, he became a man who dreamed of peace.

I think out of all, he is one of the most interesting characters. In general, he is an unscrupulous, selfish, cold and calculating man. A genius at deception, as he uses his abilities to pretend to have good intentions but deep down he only pursues his own dream.

However, as much as he shows himself to be heartless, in reality he is a man who used to be noble at one point in his life but unfortunate circumstances and other detestable people led him to become someone resentful and loaded with hate.

A part of his good heart (or what remains) for me shows in how he treats Thorfinn. He's still a tough guy but he actually becomes his mentor. In the end Askeladd had nothing against Thors, he was just doing a job. He notices Thorfinn's tenacity and skill, so without him noticing he trains him to be a cunning and fearsome warrior.

Askeladd to some extent also shaped Thorfinn's personality.

An old navigator, Thors best friend. This man is just as noble and dreamy as Thors, he played with and took care of Thorfinn when he was a little boy so when Thors is killed and the boy is left for missing he feels incredibly guilty for not being able to help at all, so he sets out to find Thorfinn at all costs. He searched for him in every corner of the world and would not give up until he found him. It was his debt to his friend and he had to pay it off.

Leif becomes a ray of hope in Thorfinn's life, even though he doesn't know it. He is an affable character and although his role is secondary, he contributes an important advance to the plot. He will become a necessary bridge to move to another stage in the story.

The most raw, visceral and brutal representation of the Vikings. A true warrior who only fights for the pleasure of power, war and destruction, so much so that in battle he can completely lose consciousness becoming a killing machine.

He is Askeladd's right-hand man. In this relationship, the connection of interest is also seen since Askeladd used him as one more piece of his game. In the end we see the more human side of Björn, who was just a lonely man looking for at least one friend... He never really finds one.

Although at first glance he doesn't seem to contribute much to the plot, the truth is that he shows us the horrors of war where men like him were abundant, they were the ones who caused chaos. People whom because of the power and the feeling of destruction, stopped being human.

The outcast prince of England. Despised by his father, the King, who considers him weak, he is raised as a sickly, scared, submissive child who requires constant protection, so much so that he does not even speak for fear of others. Although we quickly see the development of this character who goes from being the prey to becoming a hunter.

He starts out as a sweet and noble boy, but because of Askeladd's tricks he ends up experiencing immense pain that leads him to want to transform the world to make it a place of peace. But this vision is somewhat distorted and later we see how he is not as noble as you might think.

In this season he is a character that serves more to advance the story but does not have much relevance. His real contribution can be seen from the second season, which I'll talk about in another post 😉.

I left the protagonist for the end because all the other characters have a small contribution in the formation of his character. Thorfinn is a victim of the circumstances, a boy unlucky boy that falls into the most horrifying situations imaginable.

Of course the biggest trauma for him is witnessing the brutal death of his father when he was just six years old. This wreaks havoc on his personality, turning him into a person consumed by hatred and rage that leads him to experience the horrors of war, where he murders thousands of people, women, children, men, all in cold blood... They all perish with the cutting of his two short daggers.

Thorfinn becomes a skilled warrior, strong and feared. He commands great respect among the Vikings despite his young age. But no matter what may happen, he never forgets his goal which is to kill Askeladd and avenge his father. That is the reason to live from him, revenge. That is why he constantly carries out Askeladd's orders in order to be worthy of challenging him to a duel where he can defeat him.

It is interesting to see Thorfinn's path, how he loses himself in hatred and destruction, chasing a revenge that is increasingly blurred, taking away meaning from his life and losing himself in the process. He is a violent and impulsive character but he has suffered so much that in the end you want to see how far he is capable of going. He is a cool character.

The main characteristic of this anime is the spiral of tragedy and violence, where all the characters have suffered which is the main reason for their actions. Some make mistakes and regret it, others do not accept their mistakes, preferring to assume the consequences. One of them only suffers and doesn't even understand why...

The war theme gives it the necessary action to hook the viewer apart from being the component that brings dynamism to the plot that is truly dramatic. That balance is perfectly achieved by making the story so captivating that it even makes you want to binge-watch all 24 episodes.

Manga writer Makoto Yukimura based the plot on historical figures, animes he watched during his childhood, as well as trips he himself took to Norway and Scandinavia. He did a whole lot of research on the Vikings and the wars, focusing not only on their achievements but also on the harsh reality they had to live through.

So if you want story, drama and action in the anime style, Vinland Saga is what you are looking for.

Vengo a hablarles sobre la primera temporada de Vinland Saga, un anime un tanto fuera de lo común puesto que no nos habla de la historia de nipones, sino de vikingos. Síp, ya con eso llama bastante la atención porque los animes por lo general se centran en japoneses, pero esta vez tenemos como protagonista a un islandés llamado Thorfinn, un niño común de apenas seis años que vive en un pequeño pueblo del siglo XI donde siempre está nevando.

Thorfinn vive con su madre Helga, su hermana mayor Ylva y su padre Thors, quien por su temple, presencia imponente y sobretodo su gran nobleza, es quien más destaca entre los habitantes del pueblo. Todos lo respetan y todos buscan de su guía. Es el ejemplo a seguir. La familia se dedica a la cría de ganado, mercadeo, entre otras labores.

Un día unos extranjeros llegan al país y entre ellos uno de sus esclavos escapa, llegando justamente al pueblo. Thors decide ayudarlo ya que el pobre hombre se encuentra moribundo pero por supuesto, los dueños comienzan a buscarlo hasta dar con él en la casa de Thors. Este compra al esclavo para lograr salvarlo pero esto conlleva a una serie de consecuencias desafortunadas...

Descubren que Thors tiene un pasado, solía ser un vikingos de Joms, un temible guerrero respetado por miles quienes lo creían muerto en batalla. Este había decidido escapar de ese mundo de sangre y (auto)destrucción pero es finalmente encontrado y obligado a ir a la guerra. Los aldeanos nunca habían sido expuestos a la guerra pero lejos de temerla se sintieron entusiasmados, incluso algunos jóvenes se ofrecieron como voluntarios a acompañar a Thors, entre esos su querido amigo Leif.

Thorfinn siendo un niño vivaz y volátil quería ir a luchar junto a su padre pero Thors se lo prohíbe rotundamente, prometiendo volver pronto. Thorfinn se va molesto con él. Cuando zarparon se dan cuenta que el pequeño temerario se había escondido en el barco por lo que no les quedó más remedio que cuidar de él. A mitad de camino son emboscados por los vikingos de Joms. Thors al saber que este grupo de mercenarios no se iba a rendir fácilmente inicia un duelo con su líder, un tal Askeladd, también un guerrero formidable y temido.

En este duelo contra todo pronóstico Thors es asesinado ante los ojos de Thorfinn quien justo allí siente cómo una parte de sí es rota en mil pedazos... Lleno de desolación y un increíble odio jura cobrar venganza.

Viene a ser el origen de todo; motivación de Thorfinn y quien forma su carácter, a su vez sirve como punto de anclaje cuando el protagonista parece perderlo todo. Es noble, valiente, inteligente, la definición de un gran hombre quien tuvo la revelación en el momento más crítico de su vida. Se dio cuenta que de nada valía ese mundo de muerte perenne en el que pretendía vivir. Realmente estaba muerto en vida.

Una vez llega a esta conclusión se encarga de enmendar sus errores, ser un hombre distinto. Un hombre sin enemigos.

Es un personaje sólido, muy bien logrado a pesar de tener una corta aparición. Incluso en el diseño del personaje y su voz son los perfectos representando esa calma y paciencia de Thors. Es sin duda la representación justa de un buen hombre.

Después de haber sido un guerrero, se convirtió en un hombre que soñaba con la paz.

Creo que de todos es uno de los personajes más interesantes. En general es un hombre sin escrúpulos, egoísta, frío y calculador. Un genio en el engaño, ya que utiliza sus habilidades para pretender tener buenas intenciones pero en el fondo sólo persigue su propio sueño.

Sin embargo, por mucho que se demuestre como un ser desalmado en realidad es un hombre que llegó a ser noble en un momento de su vida pero las circunstancias desafortunadas y otras personas detestables lo llevaron a convertirse en alguien resentido y cargado de odio.

Una parte de su buen corazón (o lo que queda) para mí se nota en como trata a Thorfinn. Sigue siendo un tipo rudo pero realmente se convierte en su mentor. Al final Askeladd no tenía nada en contra de Thors, simplemente estaba cumpliendo con un trabajo. Él nota la tenacidad y habilidad de Thorfinn por lo que sin que este lo note lo llega a formar para ser un guerrero astuto y temible.

Askeladd hasta cierto punto también formó la personalidad de Thorfinn.

Un viejo navegador, el mejor amigo de Thors. Este hombre es igual de noble y soñador, jugaba y cuidaba de Thorfinn cuando era un pequeño niño por lo que cuando Thors es asesinado y dan al niño por perdido se siente increíblemente culpable por no haber podido ayudar en nada, así que se propone encontrar a Thorfinn a toda costa. Lo buscó en cada rincón del mundo y no se rendiría hasta encontrarlo. Era su deuda con su amigo y debía saldarla.

Leif se vuelve un rayo de esperanza en la vida de Thorfinn, aunque éste no lo sepa. Es un personaje afable y aunque secundario su papel aporta un avance importante a la trama. Se convertirá en un puente necesario para pasar a otra etapa de la historia.

La representación de lo más crudo, visceral y brutal de los vikingos. Un verdadero guerrero que sólo lucha por el placer del poder, la guerra y la destrucción, tanto así que en la batalla puede perder por completo la consciencia convirtiéndose en una máquina de matar.

Es la mano derecha de Askeladd. En esta relación también se ve la conexión por interés, ya que Askeladd lo utilizaba como una pieza más de su juego. Al final vemos la parte más humana de Björn, quien solo era un hombre solitario en busca de al menos un amigo... Realmente nunca llega a encontrarlo.

Aunque a primera vista no parece aportar mucho a la trama, la verdad es que nos demuestra los horrores de la guerra donde hombres como él eran abundantes, eran quienes propiciaban el caos. Personas que por el poder y la sensación de la destrucción dejaron de ser humanos.

El príncipe marginado de Inglaterra. Despreciado por su padre el Rey quien lo considera débil, se cría como un niño enfermizo, asustadizo, sumiso y que requiere de constante protección, tanto es así que ni siquiera habla por temor a los demás. Aunque de forma rápida, vemos el desarrollo de este personaje que pasa de ser la presa a convertirse en un cazador.

Comienza siendo un niño dulce y noble, pero por las artimañas de Askeladd termina experimentando un inmenso dolor que lo lleva a querer transformar el mundo, convertirlo en un lugar de paz. Pero esta visión está un tanto distorsionada y más adelante vemos cómo no es tan noble como se podría pensar.

En esta temporada es un personaje que sirve más para darle un avance a la historia pero no posee demasiada relevancia. Su aporte real se ve a partir de la segunda, de la cual les hablaré en otro post 😉.

Dejé al protagonista para el final porque todos los otros personajes tienen un pequeño aporte en la formación de su carácter. Thorfinn es una víctima de las circunstancias, un niño que tuvo mala suerte y se vio involucrado en las situaciones más horrorosas que se podrían imaginar.

Por supuesto el trauma más grande es presenciar la brutal muerte de su padre apenas teniendo seis años. Esto genera estragos en su personalidad, convirtiéndose en una persona consumida por el odio y la rabia que lo lleva a vivir los horrores de la guerra, donde asesina a sangre fría a miles de personas, mujeres, niños, hombres... Todos perecen con el corte de sus dos dagas cortas.

Thorfinn se convierte en un guerrero experto, fuerte y temido. Infunde un gran respeto entre los vikingos a pesar de su corta edad. Pero no importa lo que pueda ocurrir, no olvida para nada su meta que es asesinar a Askeladd y vengar a su padre. Esa es su razón de vivir, la venganza. Por eso constantemente cumple las órdenes de Askeladd para ser así digno de retarlo a un duelo donde pueda vencerlo.

Es interesante ver el camino de Thorfinn, cómo se va perdiendo en el odio y destrucción persiguiendo una venganza que cada vez se ve más difuminada, restándole sentido a su vida y perdiéndose a sí mismo en el proceso. Es un personaje violento e impulsivo pero ha sufrido tanto que al final deseas ver hasta dónde es capaz de llegar. Es un personaje genial.

Lo que más caracteriza a este anime es el espiral de tragedia y violencia, donde todos los personajes han sufrido, lo cual es la razón principal de sus acciones. Unos se equivocan y se arrepienten, otros no aceptan sus errores prefiriendo asumir las consecuencias. Uno sólo sufre y ni entiende porqué...

La temática bélica le da la acción necesaria para enganchar al espectador aparte de ser el componente que le aporta dinamismo a la trama que realmente es dramática. Ese equilibrio está perfectamente logrado haciendo de la historia algo cautivante que incluso hace que quieras ver los 24 capítulos en un maratón.

El escritor del manga Makoto Yukimura basó la trama en personajes históricos, animes que vio durante su infancia, así como en viajes que él mismo realizó a Noruega y Escandinavia. Realizó toda una investigación respecto a los vikingos y las guerras enfocándose no sólo en sus logros sino también en la cruda realidad que debieron vivir.

Así que si deseas historia, drama y acción con el estilo de anime, Vinland Saga es lo que estás buscando.
