Debo confesar que no soy mucho de series puesto que me cuesta mantenerme al día si están en emisión y si ya terminaron pero tienen muchos capítulos me parece que no la terminaré nunca así que no la veo. Lo sé, una estupidez 😅. Sin embargo, cuando encuentro series cortas que me llaman la atención no me lo pienso dos veces. En este caso Gambito de Dama es una serie que me cautivó desde el primer capítulo por lo que hoy les hablaré de ella advirtiendo (como siempre) los posibles spoilers.

I must confess that I'm not much of a series fan since it's hard for me to keep up with it if they're on the air and if they've already finished but they have many chapters, it seems to me that I'll never finish it so I just don't watch it. I know, stupid 😅. However, when I find short series that catch my attention I don't think twice to start watching it. In this case The Queen's Gambit is a series that captivated me from the first chapter, so today I will talk about it warning you (as always) about the upcoming spoilers.

La trama | The Plot

Tenemos a la pequeña Beth Harmon, una niña que a muy corta edad queda huérfana por lo que es ingresada a un orfanato sólo para niñas. Al ser los años 50 digamos que las cosas no se solían administrar como se creería puesto que hay ciertas irregularidades aunque claro, en aquel entonces era de lo más normal. Por ejemplo, a las niñas se les administraban pastillas tranquilizantes para mantener todo en calma y sin complicaciones.

Beth toma estas pastillas aunque realmente no era una niña que diera problemas, de hecho no destacaba en lo absoluto. Era tranquila (tal vez demasiado), introvertida e inocente aunque bastante curiosa. En el orfanato hace amigos, desde luego, como Jolene una niña un poco mayor que ella, e incluso el señor Shaibel, el conserje. Esta última resulta ser su amistad preferida puesto que el viejo señor Shaibel apesar de ser un hombre de muy pocas palabras es bastante bueno en el ajedrez. A Beth le comienza a interesar profundamente el juego por lo que le pide que le enseñe. Éste a regañadientes acepta y comienza a jugar frecuentemente.

We have little Beth Harmon, a girl who is orphaned at a very young age and is admitted to an orphanage only for girls. Being the 50s, let's say that things were not used to being administered as one would believe since there are certain irregularities, although of course, at that time it was quite normal. For example, the girls were given tranquilizer pills to keep everything calm and uncomplicated.

Beth takes these pills even though she really wasn't a troublesome kid, in fact she didn't stand out at all. She was quiet (maybe too much), introverted and innocent, although quite curious. At the orphanage she makes friends of course, like Jolene, a girl a little older than her, and even Mr. Shaibel, the janitor. Later we'll see that Mr. Shaibel turns out to be her favorite friendship, despite being a man of very few words, is quite good at chess. Beth becomes deeply interested in the game so she asks him to teach her how to play. He reluctantly agrees and they begin to play frequently.

Beth va aprendiendo, mejorando cada vez más. El ajedrez se convierte en su pasatiempo preferido y hay otra cosa a la que también se va acostumbrando: las pastillas. Comienza a consumir cada vez más puesto que el efecto que producen hace que ella tenga un tipo de alucinaciones visuales donde puede ver jugadas de ajedrez para aplicarlas luego. Esto le causaría varios problemas a aquella niña tan tranquila.

Beth is learning, getting better and better. Chess becomes her favorite pastime and there is another thing that she is also getting used to: pills. She begins to consume more and more since the effect they produce causes her to have a type of visual hallucinations where she can see chess moves that she can apply later. This would cause several problems for that so call calm girl.

Finalmente Beth es adoptada siendo una joven adolescente por Alma Wheatley y su esposo quienes intentan brindarle una buena calidad de vida. Beth ha desarrollado una personalidad evitatita, no le agrada mezclarse con la gente por lo que tiene problemas de socialización. Sin embargo, su pasión por el ajedrez no se reduce en lo más mínimo. Al contrario, comienza a participar en competencias oficiales donde la mayoría de competidores cuentan con amplia experiencia en el ajedrez. Esto no la detiene sino que la impulsa a mejorar cada vez más convirtiéndose en una jugadora ejemplar, ganando numerosas competencias.

Finally, Beth is adopted as a young teenager by Alma Wheatley and her husband who try to provide her with a good life quality. Beth has developed an avoidant personality, she doesn't like to mix with people so she has socialization problems. However, her passion for chess is not diminished in the slightest. On the contrary, she begins to participate in official competitions where most of the competitors have extensive experience in chess. This does not stop her but rather drives her to improve more and more, becoming an exemplary player, winning numerous competitions.

Sin embargo así como su pasión por el ajedrez aumenta también lo hace el gusto por las pastillas tranquilizantes... Además deberá enfrentar traumas que la persiguen desde pequeña así como los nuevos que están por venir.

However, just as her passion for chess increases, so does her taste for tranquilizer pills... In addition, she will have to face traumas that have haunted her since she was little, as well as the new ones that are yet to come.

El elenco y sus personajes | The cast and the characters

Tengo que comenzar hablando del personaje principal, Beth Harmon y no solo porque me parece un personaje genial sino porque también la actriz hace un trabajo espectacular. Anya Taylor-Joy es una actriz que interpreta papeles dramáticos de forma genial, y en el caso de Beth puedes casi sentir las emociones que el personaje experimenta a través de sus expresiones, la forma en la que desarrolla las líneas del guión (la puesta en escena), incluso el lenguaje corporal va acorde a lo que se intenta transmitir.

Aparte es un personaje que vemos pasar por traumas así como las consecuencias de los mismos, cómo vive esas situaciones intentando adaptarse de la mejor manera posible para sobrevivir para así finalmente madurar, crecer como persona y superar esas situaciones aprendiendo no sólo de aquellas que no podía controlar sino también de sus errores por malas decisiones.

I have to start by talking about the main character, Beth Harmon and not only because I think she's a great character but also because the actress does a spectacular job. Anya Taylor-Joy is an actress who plays dramatic roles brilliantly, and in Beth's case you can almost feel the emotions the character experiences through her expressions, the delivery of the lines of the script (the staging), even the body language is consistent with what is trying to be convey.

Besides, she is a character that we see going through traumas as well as their consequences, how she lives those situations trying to adapt in the best way possible to survive in order to finally mature, grow as a person and overcome those situations, learning not only from those that she could not control but also her mistakes due to bad decisions.

El resto de personajes están allí para aportarle algo al carácter que desarrolla finalmente la protagonista. Por ejemplo, quien se convierte en su modelo a seguir, alguien a quien admirar, su mentor es el señor Shaibel (interpretado por Bill Camp). Gracias a él la pequeña Beth encuentra un propósito en la vida así como la guía para cumplirlo. Luego está su madre adoptiva, Alma Wheatley (con la actriz Marielle Heller) con quien forja ese vínculo anhelado de madre e hija pero no solo eso sino que se convierten en camaradas, verdaderas amigas y cómplices. De ella obtiene la figura protectora que debió haber sido su madre biológica.

The rest of the characters are there to contribute something to the character that the protagonist finally develops. For example, who becomes her role model, someone to look up to, her mentor is Mr. Shaibel (played by Bill Camp). Thanks to him, little Beth finds a purpose in life as well as the guide to fulfill it. Then there is her adoptive mother, Alma Wheatley (with the actress Marielle Heller) with whom she forges that long-awaited bond of mother and daughter but not only that, they become comrades, true friends and accomplices. From her she obtains the protective figure that should have been her biological mother.

Está también Jolene (interpretada por Moses Ingram) que es una amistad duradera pero sobretodo honesta que se encargará de ser el punto de anclaje de Beth, es quien termina de convencerla de que debe poner los pies sobre la tierra. Que debe tomar responsabilidad de sus actos y de su vida. También personajes como Benny (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Harry (Harry Melling), Townes (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd), entre otros la hacen darse cuenta de sus errores así como de lo ingenua y un tanto egocéntrica que puede llegar a ser, además de demostrarle que puede tener la jugada controlada en su tablero de ajedrez, pero no en sus emociones.

There is also Jolene (played by Moses Ingram) who is a lasting friendship but above all honest who will be in charge of being Beth's anchor point, she is the one who ends up convincing her that she must put her feet on the ground, that she should take responsibility for her actions and her life. Also characters like Benny (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Harry (Harry Melling), Townes (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd), among others, make her realize her mistakes as well as of how naive and somewhat self-centered she can be, in addition to showing her that she can have the play controlled on her chessboard, but not on her emotions.

My opinion | Mi opinión

Demás está decir que esta serie me encantó. Es un drama que se desarrolla de forma breve, rápido pero muy bien hecho. Da el desarrollo de personaje justo como para transmitir el mensaje principal que es el crecimiento personal de Beth a pesar de su pasado. Ella aprende que debía priorizarse a sí misma emocionalmente, sanar, avanzar y crecer con la consciencia de que sus acciones no solo afectan a otros sino también a ella misma. Además me agrada la perspectiva del tema de los traumas infantiles con un personaje que no se victimiza sino que trata de adaptarse aunque claro, toma malas decisiones por su evidente condición emocional.

Needless to say, I loved this series. It is a drama that develops briefly, quick but very well done. It gives just enough character development to convey the main message which is Beth's personal growth despite her past. She learns that she needed to prioritize herself emotionally, heal, move forward, and grow with the awareness that her actions affect not only others but herself as well. I also like the perspective of the theme of childhood traumas with a character who does not victimize herself but tries to adapt, although of course she makes bad decisions due to her evident emotional condition.

También me encanta que estéticamente está bien cuidado puesto que mantiene el estilo de los años 50-60 desde la ambientación hasta la parte audiovisual de la producción.

Además por allí en Youtube ví a quien señalaba que esta serie en su estética probablemente tiene influencias de una corriente artística llamada Lowbrow que toma elementos de la cultura pop para crear arte surrealista lo cual se puede apreciar en algunas escenas de la serie por los colores así como el enfoque de la cámara en ciertas tomas. Esto me parece un buen toque puesto que la protagonista se supone que es «la rarita» de la historia.

I also love that aesthetically it is well cared for since it maintains the style of the 50-60s from the setting to the audiovisual part of the production.

In addition over there on Youtube I saw someone who pointed out that this series in its aesthetics is probably influenced by an artistic current called Lowbrow that takes elements of pop culture to create surreal art, which can be seen in some scenes of the series due to the colors as well as the focus of the camera in certain shots. This I believe is a nice touch since the main character is supposed to be "the weirdo".

Para finalizar solo he de decir que esta serie es genial en todos los sentidos, así que si te gustan las historias dramáticas y quieres algo corto para ver, esta serie es la indicada✨♟️.

To finish I just have to say that this series is great in every way, so if you like dramatic stories and want something short to watch, this series is the one for you ✨♟️.
