Joyeux Noël de Christian Carion / Merry Christmas by Christian Carion

Review by @marcybetancourt · 1768d · of Joyeux Noël

We are already in December, and the days of Christmas and New Year's celebrations are approaching.

Many films have been made in the context of those days, and almost all of them have the same spirit or message: miracles, generosity, and believing, emphatically, believing in ourselves.

I would like to talk about a film that has two very peculiar contexts: Christmas and war.

Estuvo protagonizada por Diane Kruger(Anna Sörensen), Daniel Brühl (Teniente Horstmayer), Benno Fürmann (Nikolaus Sprink), Guillaume Canet (Teniente Audebert), Gary Lewis (Pastor Palmer), Bernard Le Coq (General Audebert) y Alex Ferns (Teniente Gordon).

In Latin America, it was titled "Noche de Paz"

The film is based on the chapter "The Incredible Christmas of 1914" from the book "The Battles of Flanders and Artois 1914-1918" by Yves Buffetaut. In short, it was an unofficial ceasefire, around Christmas 1914.

It's a true story of the so-called Great War in Europe. A group of Scottish, French, and German soldiers, meeting in the trenches in the Christmas days of 1914, decide to make a truce to "live and let live" exchange cigarettes and have a little fraternization with a game of soccer.

Then, the truce continued for each side to bury their dead and, even to share, each one with their customs, that particular night of peace.

After this behavior, the troops were harshly punished by their superiors of the military rank. It's visible that the generals live very comfortably in the cities mobilizing plastic soldiers at a luxurious table without caring about the infantry troops and the destinies of those men.

C. Carion leaves an open ending for the viewers because Yves Buffetaut's writing allows it.

I think it's normal to wonder if something like this could have happened. Indeed, it did happen.

The film is very moving and with many laudable aspects but Christian Carion misses the opportunity for the message to have greater force because of its sweetened semantic treatment.

The performances were fine and, in a few scenes, the protagonists were in a good show.

The scenes of camaraderie are recreated as justifications for the attitude of the soldiers at the end of the truce. How to kill familiar faces with which they shared the Christmas night?

The soldiers, on the different sides, were no longer anonymous. Possibly, they still represented the enemy (the hostility of war continued) but nothing was the same after sharing Christmas.

There is a touching scene, and in my opinion, it's one of the climaxes of the film: a mass for all the soldiers with the overwhelming voices of two artists. A German soldier whose role is performed by Benno Fürmann (the voice is by tenor Rolando Villazón), and his Danish wife, singer Diane Kruger (the voice is by soprano Natalie Dessay) who give the audience and the soldiers an unforgettable recital.

Those hours changed their lives. Is it possible that war and battles can exist at Christmas? The film is undoubtedly anti-war.

I insist the script could have made much more of the chapter "The Incredible Christmas of 1914". But, there is a slight criticism of patriotic ideals and loyalty as opposed to hoping and faith (also, the church's role in the war is criticized).
Even in war and its horrors, humanity and its best values do not cease to exist.

"Joyeux Noël" does not resort to tearfulness, nor does it resort to scathing criticism. It's not a classic nor does it pretend to innovate the subject matter, but the approach is strong and, from my point of view, it achieves its goal. It's difficult not to be touched when watching it.
