Welcome once again; this time we're diving into a movie titled Oversabi Aunty. Oversabi Aunty happens to be a very funny and comedy-filled movie. It is a movie by the amazing Toyin Abraham, one of the best in Nollywood.
It follows the story of a woman called Toun. Toun happens to be an usher in church, not your regular usher, though; she's the type of usher who's always seeing something wrong with everything. Right from the first scene you can tell the kind of person she is: busy looking at everyone inside the church, sending people out, and criticizing their dressings, and all. She's the type of person you can refer to as a monitoring spirit, and that is her problem: busy checking others and monitoring their lives while paying very little or no attention to her own family.
She's married to a man called Chidi, and they have about four children, but while she was busy correcting, monitoring, and checking other people's lives, her own family was quietly developing problems snd she cannot see it. Her children needed her, but she's too busy with others' lives to pay attention to her own. Well, things later got out of hand, especially when her first daughter was preparing for marriage. And her own habit of interfering in other people's lives created a problem for her, one that she cannot handle.
I love the movie so much, especially how it explores and confronts religious hypocrisy, parenting, culture, and the consequences of judging others without first looking and examining oneself. Another thing that made me love this movie is how it is a very relatable one; almost every one of us knows someone who perfectly fits into Toun role in our society or religious settings. Those kinds of people who're already ready to talk down on you, correct you, and criticize you and all, but who have failed to look inward at their own behaviors and homes.
I must hail Toyin Abraham for this beautiful movie, though; she acted as Toun, and it was a wonderful performance. Even though it seems she exaggerated some things, still it was interesting to watch. Mike also did well as Chidi, the husband of Toun... I also love how the movie showed so well that children in the home can be going through a lot, while their parents might feel everything is fine with them.
I have a problem with the edits, though; some scenes felt too long, talk of the first and second scenes was just too long for my liking, and the scene with Odunlade Adekola as an officer who stopped their car and requested their particulars and all is long even though funny. Also, Toun was just doing too much; we've already known who she is and all. They should have allowed some others a little bit of attention too, especially her children, just so we could understand things better and all, but nah, Toun is always the center.
And like I said earlier, some things are just too exaggerated, even though funny; some almost lost the fun in it due to how they were dragged and exaggerated. Even still, the movie is an amazing one, and I can recommend that you give it a watch.
