The woman king. This is a must-watch movie, and I won't even want to beat around the bush at all. This movie tells the story of Nanisca, a fearless and powerful warrior of the Agojie, in Dahomey. Agojie is an all-female warrior group who are in charge of securing and protecting the kingdom. Nanisca happens to be the head of this all-female warrior group, and she did her best to secure and protect it from enemies' infiltration.
Along the line line, they began to recruit more women into the warrior group and that was when Nawi, a very young, fearless and beautiful young lady came in. She trained under Nanisca and became a very good warrior too, and as the movie began to unfold, it started to show that Nawi and Nanisca were somehow connected, but then, what exactly is their connection? Do they come from the same place? Are they distant families? Have they been or have their families been rivals before? Or... Is Nanisca the mother of Nawi? OMG!
I love this movie so much. I love how it shows what the bond and love of sisterhood can look like. This movie is a highly rated one, I mean, highly rated. And when I heard about it, I didn't even give it a second thought before going all in to watch it. And I must admit that I enjoyed it and that it is worth the hype.
What caught my attention at first was the title, The Woman King, and upon starting the movie and seeing women all over, I thought the movie was about a kingdom full of women; it was later I got to know that nah, it is beyond that. Dahomey is actually a very big kingdom consisting of both males and females. The interesting part is that the warriors are females. The females are the ones going all out to fight in battles, securing the kingdom and protecting the kingdom itself.
Nanisca played and killed her role. I love how she was able to be a leader, a powerful one at that even though she has her weakness and still in carrying the pain from her past. And when you see her, she's always standing, fearless and courageous. She's indeed a warrior. And talk of Nawi, whom we later found out was the daughter of Nanisca. Nawi killed her role too. A very young, fearless, and vibrant lady. I love how outspoken and stubborn that she was. Initially, she didn't want that life, the life of a warrior, but then she found herself there, and with time, she became a good warrior alongside Nanisca.
And looking at the movie as it contains women warriors, you may want to think that it won't be that fierce, but believe me, it was fierce. They weren't just ladies, they know that they're into, they know it won't be easy, an they accepted to be more of men. There was bloodshed, killings, betrayals, and all. And the bond between those female warriors gives it an extra touch of likeness.
At a point, I even got lost in it; I mean, I began to feel a certain person must not die. I feel they must come out of this situation and a lot more. Most times when I'm watching a movie, I don't feel that way, and the reason is that I've programmed myself not to. I'm watching a movie; it is not really happening, it is just a movie. But this was different.
The movie is an historical one, and they did did justice to it. There was fun in it, there was sadness, there were fights, there are issues, there's betrayal, and a lot more. I'm amazed at how the movie was able to capture all of it. The actors did really well, the women delivered, and all I can say is I enjoyed it. Just that the death of someone pained me. Do you want to know who the person is and why it pained me? Then go ahead and give this movie a watch; you will then understand better.
